QUOTE(iqlas @ May 5 2015, 06:41 PM)
Hi everyone,

I need suggestion for a new laptop. I have a mid range gaming desktop that is an equivalent/ slightly more powerful than a ps 4. However after I start working at my current company which is around 1 year+ ago. I don't really have the time to actually play games. I don't even follow on the latest game anymore because I usually stay until late hours. Therefore rather than just letting my desktop depreciate in value even further because of time. Im thinking of selling it and get myself a laptop because other than the ones that the company provided which is the lenovo T430S(some people got newer version), I don't exactly have any laptop that I can use for my personal usage. I would like to have something portable for my own personal usage because the company are able to track everything in the the laptop. Since my desktop is immobile, it just stayed there without any maintenance. Outdated drivers and all. So I would like to have a portable laptop that is easy to manage similiar on how todays smartphone works where I can store my personal documents and comfortable enough writing documents or emails. Doing this sort of stuff in phone is just troublesome even on my 5.5 inch phone

In term of gaming, since this is a laptop, I don't expect to be playing the latest AAA title and all, i'm fine with older steam titles and with the upcoming windows 10. There's a high possibility that alot of IOS and android game are going to be ported to windows, that should cover my gaming needs. Other than that from my survey, it seems gaming laptop does't really last long. The main reason is because of the heat. They ussually will start to have problem when the age of laptop reach 1 year, sometimes before 1 year and the GPU always go out first. So not sure I want to take that risk.
Here are my criteria:

1) Preferred brand
None, I don't really care about branding

2) Budget
        RM 4k and below

3) Usage
        a) Libre/ microsoft office or anything in equivalent
        b) Movies
        c) Dual booting windows 8.1(10 incoming soon) with ubuntu
        d) Light Gaming

4) Preferred size
I don't really mind the screen size as long as it is light. Using my T430s as a benchmark, based on the spec from the website. It stated that this laptop weight 1.8kg, so i'm looking at something lighter

5) Laptop that I had surveyed and my opinion on it

        a) Dell XPS 13
              http://www.techhypermart.com/notebooks/del...intel-w8-1.html

Pros: Portable in term of weight and screen size. i5 with the intergrated gpu seems good enough for my usage, backlit keyboard
cons: With my budget can only get 4gb ram and 128 ssd. Trackpad issue

          b) Aspire S7 (broadwel update)
              http://www.techhypermart.com/notebooks/ace...intel-w8-1.html

Pros: Same as xps 13 but with touchscreen and 8gb ram
              Cons: 128 ssd

          c) Asus ux305

              8gb ram, 256 SSD, with 5Y10 core m
              http://www.techhypermart.com/notebooks/asu...rated-w8-1.html

              4gb ram, 256 SSD with 5Y71 core m

Im confuse which of this two version would be better for my usage. Im satisfied with the ssd amount but but I want the one with the faster processor + 8gb of ram

6) Some general question that in relation with laptop

          a) Is a touchscreen helpful?
Personally, on a laptop I can't think of usage where I can really take advantage of the touchscreen. Perhaps playing or using game and apps that gonna be ported for windows 10

          b) Trackpad and keyboard
Does any of the laptop above have the same quality as the macbook air. I every laptop review seems to mention that macbook have the best trackpad and keyboard, I don't have experience with macbook
so I can't really say. I do have 11 inch macbook air on my list though. The 226gb ssd are within my budget by the 8gb ram can only be obtained online. Whats so special about their keyboard and trackpad?\

          c) Is 4gb ram and 128Gb ssd enough for me?
Since you guys are more experience, just wondering whether 4 gb is actually enough since im looking my desktop have 8gb. And 4gb seems to be bare minimum theses days. And 128gb ssd seems
quite small for a dual boot or am i just being paranoid?

          d) Does shop allow to replace SSD?
My thinking is that for example for the aspire S7, maybe I can ask the shop to replace with a bigger SSD while retaining the other component. Because for the 226gb, it includes screen, processor upgrade
              which makes it quite expensive

          e) I'm still open for any suggestion if you have any coz I do keep UX305LN and acer V nitro in my list also
*
Actually those u mentioned not all suitable for gaming.. like xps13.. even though intel 5500 quite good...

I suggest Inspiron 7447, 5547

Asus A series...

Lenovo y40

Those less than 2.3kg

Yeah, some do. I think Dell does anyways.

That Asus layout sounds bad. Why put power button in with your keyboard layout?

Asus I hears hv some weird design in the new models.. is this 1 of them?

I believe GTX970M isn't hard to get when compared to GTX980M by setting my cap to RM6k. At least I'm not aiming for GTA V 60fps.

Actually most laptop can connect to external PC GPU thru msata slot.. hehe

Toshiba is kinda hard to get these days and other brand offer better specs than toshiba. there is toshiba notebook within your model but battery life is questionable.

can consider this
Dell Latitude 3440 14” A.G - i3-4005U , 4GB , 500GB , HD4400 , W8.1Pro with W7 Pro Preinstalled , 1 Yr NBD : RM2000+/-  **business series
Asus UX305FA Zenbook 13.3" FHD , M-5Y10 , 4GB , 128GB M.2 SSD , W8.1 : RM2300+/-
Asus PRO451LD-WO216G 14” , i5-4210U , 4GB , 500GB, GT820 1GB , W8.1Pro : RM2400+/-
HP ProBook 430 G2 K0F98PT 13.3” Anti-Glare - i5-4210U , 4GB , 500GB , HD4400 , W7Pro Preload + W8Pro License : RM2300+/-
moderate gaming,
Dell Inspiron 3543 15” , i5-5200U , 4GB , 500GB , GT820M 2GB , DOS : RM1900+/-
Lenovo Z40-70 14” FHD - i5-4210U , 4GB , 1TB , GT820 2GB , W8.1 , 2YR : RM2000/-

if you can bargain to lower than 2k.. this acer is good deal too.
Acer Aspire E5-571G 15.6” - i5-5200 , 4GB , 1TB , Nvidia 840 2GB , W8.1 : RM2030+/-
i dont think you can get gtx980m for that 3.6k.. unless u building desktop and carry it to ur uni jz like me  laugh.gif

your budget only allow you to take gtx860m/gtx960m
for example Gigabyte P35X v3 15.6" QHD+ - i7-4720HQ + GTX 980M 8GB D5 , Win8.1 : RM8600
or Illegear D5 15" FHD IPS  - i7-4790 +  GTX 980M 8GB GDDR5:  RM8200 <<cheapest among all gtx980m

What you mean by new or old school?

Old school style, those got mxm slot, heavy n big but good news is when spoil dun need change the whole mobo, n can play like LEGO.. n less heat issue

New age r those thin n light so called gaming laptop like razor, MSI, new aw where everything soldered... they can claim they hv this n tat to reduce heat n bla bla but results shows all of them can cook egg after 6 months ( note tat I means thin n light). New aw15 wif gtx 970m dun look at it... unless u buy a super cooler..

New age gaming when rosak after warranty mostly can throw. Unlike old school where u can replace the parts...

Get those older version Alienware, illegear, gigabyte, aftershocks, MSI GT series( only GT series, other all I dun recommend)

If u really wan a lasting gaming laptop.. BTW rog is not in the list coz they no longer tahan like those days
