Hi sifus. Im currently looking for a suitable laptop for my father.
At first he was asking me to survey for tab/slate/pads but he changed his mind due to the hassle to type reports on them.
Hope all the sifus can help me pick a suitable laptop.

Preferred Brand: Any (as long they are reliable and provide good after service)
Budget: Less than RM3300
Usage: Mainly for work in office or worksite. (Reports/Emails/Presentations/Schematic & Drawings)
Preferred Specification:
1) Support 3G Simcard (willing to substitute for a portable modem)
2) Lightweight and versatile. Probably 13" screen size

Already checked HP Spectre x360 i7 series..do you think its good for him?
Thanks in advance.

*
Yup, the Hp spectre x360 is good.

Other choices would be Dell for the after sale warranty. biggrin.gif

Check out XPS 13. The other contender to HP or Lenovo Thinkpad line. nod.gif

thanks, i guess my pick was a good one then.
hurm, heard dell afterservice is good too. but i heard you cant flip XPS 13 entirely like a tab, am i right? unsure.gif
hurm lenovo thinkpad looks ok too. but it looks a bit bulkier. perhaps lenovo yoga 3 pro? icon_question.gif

*
I don't think Lenovo Yoga Pro 3 is within your budget (I think you meant the non pro version). Yup, the XPS 13 can't flip.

Yea, the Lenovo Yoga 3 seems good.

EDIT : Just realise. Your dad will be using it at the worksite if so I won't recommend Lenovo Yoga 3. Either thinkpad or the better build of XPS13 or Hp spectre x360. nod.gif

1. Preferred Brand- Dell/HP
2. Budget - Below 5k to around 4k. Try keep it above 4k.
3. Usage - Surfing, work and game*
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 15-17in

Don't want touchscreen. Am searching for desktop replacement so battery, and weight is no issue.

*I used to be a gamer and bought a Dell XPS (back when that was the premium gaming/entertainment line). Now transforming into uncle, I still may itchy itchy install MOBA & FPS to play. I seriously doubt I will buy dedicated gaming laptop but will appreciate a good graphics card on it.

Thank you!
*
Hmm, would not suggest the HP envy line as it overheats. Unless you don't mind getting the HP Omen. As for Dell the Alienware is better than the XPS line because of cooling.

If not Illegear (No GST charged until June (+/-) and good after sale service) brows.gif brows.gif

IM NOW USING ASUS N56V...ME BUDGET IS LOWER THAN RM3500...
LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR REPLY~ biggrin.gif

Smoothly with what settings? The model you specify is using gtx950m right?

EDIT : With 950m you can game at medium setting at 720p. Link : http://www.notebookcheck.net/GTA-V-Benchmarked.140881.0.html . Even GTX 980 gets around 40+ fps...... at ultra setting rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

GL552JX is using NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 950M with 2GB DDR3 VRAM...
if not mistaken... ><"

There is nothing wrong with it.

It can play smoothly but with reduce settings and resolution. As pandera999 has said if you can get the 960m then go for it. nod.gif

well, I guess his explanation clear my misconception..
I think i just need to pump more ram instead of more core of cpu for multifile loading..

thx for ur suggestion. thumbup.gif
*
And SSD if you are loading big file (If you have the fund). It will load your excel files significantly faster. smile.gif

okay..
for SSD,
does it mean that i only can put solely SSD and no HDD?
it will be very costly if solely SSD..

unless it got another slot for me to slot in HDD..

But i guess most 14" laptop don have this support right?
*
If the laptop have an optical drive. You can use a caddy to add in SSD. If not save up and get one tongue.gif or Hybrid drives

for hybrid drive..

the ssd part only so small portion..
does it really significantly better than normal hdd??
since 8gb cant even install OS on it & not all application able to fit inside it..

i doubt it will give significant performance improvement.
*
The SSD in the hybrid acts like a big cache which boost speed. You are not going to install OS into it.

As you are using it, it will store the most frequent use files on the SSD cache which will be your windows files and frequent used programs.

im willing to spend for SSD, but the problem is
if i only can pick either SSD or HDD..
I guess HDD gonna be my choice..

unless there is a laptop provide both SSD and HDD slot for us..
well,
it might be in my wishlist.. laugh.gif

There is but mostly m.2 sata drive which is a more expensive form of a SSD.

M.2 sata is generally faster compared to standard size SSD. If i'm not mistaken because of the port speed.

as knew, this model only c/w 4 cells battery wor... can't support long hours.
*
Well, you can undervolt your CPU to get an extra hour (If you hit the jackpot on the chip set) or so from the battery bear in mind that when undervolt for casual use and gaming is different so you need to profiles (one for casual use and the other for gaming).

If you are playing port games from ios and android. It is fine for the selection above.

As for touchscreen. Yes it is good if you used it to do presentation stuff to clients and such and for a hybrid laptop it is good to have (For me anyways).

Core M series is similar to I series U model. But demanding gaming I don't think it will be good because of the stock speed.

If you still want to game you can look at the Asus with better CPU and GPU. But heat in an issue because of it thinness.

Also because thin laptop will have only one slot for HDD. You can only replace to SSD with your remaining budget.

EDIT : The Asus laptop that I was mentioning.

4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 14"

I was thinking Lenovo Ideapad Y410p. But I can't seem to find it online, not even in the official lenovo website. Would it be a good buy? Any other comparable laptops?
*
If you don't mind adding abit.
Dell inspiron 7447 is a good choice.

Most probably because the y410p (older model) is replaced by y40 (newer model)
