US$11.5bn spent by China to expand disputed Fiery Cross Reef China has spared no expense on its land reclamation activities in the South China Sea, spending an estimated 73.6 billion yuan (US$11.5 billion) on expanding Fiery Cross Reef in the Spratlys alone, reports our Chinese-language sister paper China Times. For at least a year, China has been actively reclaiming land on seven islands in the Spratly islands, which are also claimed by countries including Vietnam and the Philippines. The largest (natural) island in the archipelago, Taiping, is held by Taiwan. Fiery Cross Reef, which has been expanded to become the largest "island" in the Spratlys with a total surface area of 0.96 kilometers, is said to have cost the Chinese government 73.6 billion yuan (US$11.5 billion), excluding buildings and other fixed equipment constructed on the reef. The cost was estimated by civil engineer scholars, who stated that it costs around 75 yuan (US$12.07) to deliver each cubic meter of earth and stone to Fiery Cross, with other materials costing about 41 yuan (US$6.60) per cubic meter. Other reefs reportedly being expanded in the Spratlys by China include Cuarteron Reef, Mischief Reef, Johnson South Reef, Hughes Reef, Gaven Reef and Subi Reef. According to Zhang Huiming, director of the Yangtze River Delta Research Institute at Fudan University in Shanghai, one of the main reasons China has been so forceful in defending its claim over the Spratlys is the wealth of natural resources in the region. Apart from being rich in oil and gas and fish, the South China Sea also provides many key maritime routes, he added. http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclas...000103&cid=1101 |

Swarm robots poised to fly amid acquisitions and military investment
![]() QUOTE The PD-100 Black Hornet, manufactured by Prox Dynamics, is an air vehicle about the size of a man's finger. The UAV weighs 18 grams and now contains day and night-vision cameras that send still images or video back to an operator via a data-link. Designed for reconnaissance, the vehicle is incapable of attack or defense. But its size and ability to fly autonomously or semi-autonomously make it a clear precursor to the next generation of swarm robots. Welcome to the future of warfare. According to a recent report by the Center for New American Security titled "The Coming Swarm: The Quality of Quantity," the military is going miniature. Here's why: Today the U.S. military faces a pernicious cycle of ever rising platform costs and shrinking quantities. As a result, the number of combat ships and aircraft in the U.S. inventory has steadily declined, even during periods of significant growth in defense spending. That's problematic, according to the report, because the proliferation among adversaries of smart munitions and increasingly accurate weapons makes the decreasing numbers of ships and aircraft more vulnerable than ever. Our very expensive war machines will soon become very big strategic liabilities. So what are U.S. military planners to do? QUOTE WEDNESDAY, 15 APRIL, 2015 | 15:30 WIB Eurofighter Offer to Assemble Typhoon in Indonesia ![]() TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Representative of the European-based jet fighter manufacturer, Eurofighter, had visited Indonesia and displayed a replica of the company's famous fighter jet, Typhoon, in a hangar belonging to state-owned aircraft company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI). Eurofighter is currently trying to promote the Typhoon to replace the Indonesian Airforce’s aging F-5 fighter jets. Martin Elbourne, Eurofighter's Head of Industrial Offset promised that the company will conduct technology transfer if Indonesia was to purchase the Typhoon. "We proposed that the final assembling to be done in Indonesia, at PT DI," Martin said to journalists on Wednesday, April 15, 2015. Martin even mentioned that the company planned to make Indonesia one of its production bases following England, Germany, Spain, and Italy. Martin added that the transfer of technology program will help Indonesia to participate in the KFX/IFX fighter jet program in cooperation with South Korea. The program, Martin asserted, will increase Indonesia's bargaining power in bidding for the KFX/IFX project because currently, Indonesia has no capability to manufacture fighter jets. QUOTE(IReallyNeed Answers @ Apr 15 2015, 08:13 PM) It was never a question by the way, it was rhetorical, just some humorous observation of the likeness! Really! It's a meeting in Pakistan with a pakis general, it's either the prime minister shit or some important founding father shit. And you need to grow some sense of humor brah The way the line was structured, complete with question mark in the end sure made me see that as a question. The bit about the Jinnah/Obama resemblance also really marked the 'rhetorical question' as stupid and infantile. I advise on the need for new glasses. Probably the 'quality' of your earlier posts in this forum threw me off, but hey, probably that's just me. When people reply to your posts with nonsense like this, see how you feel. |

Singapore military chief reaffirms SAF-PLA military ties with six-day visit to China
![]() China and Singapore have agreed on concrete initiatives to deepen their defence relationship after Chief of Defence Force, Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng (left), met People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Chief of General Staff, General Fang Fenghui (right). Lieutenant General Ng is on a six-day introductory visit to China until Saturday at the invitation of General Fang. Both exchanged views on the regional security situation and the state of bilateral defence cooperation, Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a news release on Tuesday (Apr 14). MINDEF added that both armed forces chiefs committed to expanding interactions with each other under the Four-Point Consensus which was agreed on between Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen and China's Minister of National Defence Chang Wanquan during Dr Ng's visit to China last November. Lieutenant General Ng also called on General Chang, and both reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations on the 25th anniversary since diplomatic ties were established. They also noted the good progress made in military cooperation. MINDEF said Lieutenant General Ng’s visit to Beijing underscores the warm and growing ties between both countries and is the latest in a regular exchange of high-level bilateral and defence visits. |
