Just go there and walk around like weekend shopping. Most of the lighting shop are concentrate on that area.

Dear All,

I am exhausted with my research to find appropriate lighting ideas for my 3 bedroom apartment. I am tired of the clueless look the light shop owners/sales guys give me whenever I said, I do not have plaster ceiling and down lights. Some even said it is almost impossible to get decent and modern lighting for the apartment without having down lights as my main source of lighting.  icon_question.gif

This is my very first apartment and I have zero experience. My concern is whether lighting is sufficiently bright, no strobe/shadow from the ceiling fans, and optimum layout.

I have no idea what size of lighting fixture i should use.

I won't be using any wall lights.
Kitchen / Dining / Living

I have attached a photo of how the open plan of my apartment appears like. From the entrance, it goes kitchen --> dining --> and then --> Living.  There is one fan unit between the living and dining.

I have also attached the individual pic of lights that I was considering for these 3 areas but not sure if I am on the right track.

However, having said that, I did take a chance and have bought  a set of pendant lights for my dining though after careful thought of my budget - set of 3 crystal lights. I grabbed it at CIMA Lighting in PJ since it was the last display unit they had and wanted to clear it. Photo is attached.
[attachmentid=4363807]

The last photo is a collage of all individual pics including the overall of the area I am talking about. [attachmentid=4363850]

Both kitchen and living lights were chosen from Seng Hup but due to some unpleasant experience (the sales people were extremely unprofessional) throughout my selection and ordering process, I am considering to cancel the order (but not finalised yet). And if I do cancel the order, I will have to carry out the whole exercise of selection process at a different store of which I would like to just duplicate my choices if am on the right track now. This current situation is what prompted me to post my questions here.

I do plan to have a floor lamp at the corner of my L-shaped sofa but I guess that would be the last item I would buy after all furniture are in.

I am now at lost in finding the appropriate lights with a minimalist & modern touch for kitchen and living that would complement with the pendant lights that I have bought. I have some ideas of what could possibly suit the rooms which I have listed below.
3 Rooms (2 bedroom) + 1 small room (what I call as Sanctuary room)

I planned to have mounted ceiling lights in all 3 rooms. Something like this : EGLO - Quarto 1
What are your thoughts?

Both bedroom will have at least one bed side table and a lampshade that will be placed on it.

The small room a.k.a sanctuary room is planned for a simple study table, meditation area and also will have a cross-trainer. You can perhaps see the functionality of this room.

The technical details of choosing the lights overwhelms me and I hope someone from this forum could guide me through.  rclxub.gif  rclxub.gif

Thanks in advance.

You may instead use LED lighting eventhough your house doesn't have any plaster celling. It`s energy saving, brighter than bulb type and have quite some design. I`m planning to install those if I decided to discard the plaster ceiling. Moreover you can have less headache on the power point as developer has already provided. Nice apartment by the way. May I know which area is this?

>>Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Almost all the 3 shops I went to suggested LED for all the right reasons you ave mentioned above. I am not planning to add any additional points than what the developer has provided with. In my first post here - I attached photos of lights that I was considering for kitchen, living, etc... Due to some unpleasant experience at Seng Hup with the sales staff, I have cancelled my orders placed with them.

The only item that I have already purchased is the crystal lights (pendant) for the dining. My dilemma now is to fine the type of lights that would complement the pendant lights that I have purchased. Have looked at mounted ceiling lights for kitchen - limited design and due to enclosed design, the brightness is not that strong and aesthetically does not go well.

This is a 3 bedroom apartment located along the Kajang Silk Highway

To answer your questions.

1. Is the wattage and the size E27 guidance given refers to choosing the lights for track lighting for kitchen area?

--> Wattage and Size E27 is for the brightness and size of bulbs actually. Because if for pendant lights/ceiling lights, you still need to buy bulbs right? For track lights, I understand you need a driver? I am not sure about this because I don't have any track lights at my place.

  --->Thanks for the clarification S'aimer. Understood now.

2. Many friends in the forum have suggested track lighting for kitchen area. Is there any specific reason for that? Also, is there any other light types with sufficient brightness that can be considered as well? The only reason I ask this is because I am not sure if track lights will complement with the pendant lights I bought for dining area.  I am open for suggestions Any photos to support your suggestions will be helpful smile.gif.

---> Actually to me, track lighting is much better suited for cosy ambience/atmosphere areas like living room for example. Track lighting comes in multiple spot lights. I don't recommend this for kitchen partly because of maintenance. Kitchen is the most used part of the house other than the bedroom so it will be practical to have 1 or 2 pendant lights / ceiling lights so that I don't have to buy so many light bulbs for replacement whenever one light goes out.

  --->After looking at the photos you have attached here and reading your explanation, I think I am on the same page with you. Initially I was considering track lights as I wasn't game enough to consider another pendant light for the kitchen area thinking it may not go well with the crystal lights I bought for the dining area (that thought does bother me still  sweat.gif  sweat.gif ). However, as for me track lights gives me the industrial look and I am now highly influenced by the bulb replacement factor you have mentioned. It makes sense.

You can mix and match with pendant lights in different shapes and color compared to ceiling lights. Easier to complement.

  ---> I am not ruling out ceiling lights completely but I must admit that I can't find anything aesthetically appealing with a simple and modern touch at a reasonable price. All those enclosed designs that I came across at Seng Hup, CIMA and even Wong Lighting are not my cup of tea.

I know some of you here highly recommended Wong Lighting but I could not find anything that was suitable. Perhaps most of the stocks were not available during my visit (closer to CNY holidays). One of the sales person appeared quite helpful (Wong Lighting, PJ)  who asked for my apartment photos so that she could guide me better with the choices available. I cannot believe when she suggested a chandelier for my kitchen.  doh.gif  doh.gif

If anyone here have better experience dealing with any sales person who has good product knowledge and able to provide recommendation based on my situation, I don't mind paying a second visit to Wong Lighting. Would appreciate if you could PM me the contact details of the sales person whom you have dealt with with whom I can discuss my requirements.

To give you a clearer visual. Here are some pictures for you to view and you can see that you need ALOT of track lights to brighten up a area unless you are going for low lighting area.

---> Yes, agree with this.

[attachmentid=4366604] [attachmentid=4366605] [attachmentid=4366608]

Here's a different picture that shows a mix of pendant and ceiling lights

--->  Thanks so much. I think I wouldn't mind pendant light of that length in the kitchen area. Will take this into consideration when I shop around.

Since your dining lights are crystal, I would suggest the living room have a focal look that will match the crystal.

My preference would be like .. if crystal lights are not the blinged up typed like chandeliers for example, it would be safe to have an oversized pendant light in the living room, followed by simple ceiling lights in the kitchen.

Something like this light for living room.

Think of it as fashion sense, less is more and vice versa. *grins*

Nowdays most lights are from china, you can check out the lights at taobao

--->Thanks for the suggestion. Definitely agree with you. I am a minimalist and so less is more suits me for sure.

I have actually cancelled my order finally with Seng Hup for the other 2 lights that I posted the photos of. So, I only have the crystal lights (pendant) in hand now.

Been actually contemplating - how will it look like if I choose to have those crystal pendant lights in the living room instead? What would be your take?

What is taobao?

Mm, If using these crystal lights for living room, my biggest concern is does it match the furniture to create an harmonious cozy setting? Crystal lights can be used in living room, it's just that the furniture has to be either classy looking or smart enough to match.

Dining area is easier, all you need is a suitable dining table & dining chairs + table accessories. The lights will do the talking for a minimal setup.

Taobao is a chinese shopping site where many sellers sell their wares from small household goods to big goods, including clothes, makeup, lights, furniture etc. You can google taobao.
