Kesian orang yang buat FDP berkampung in office only liao... Not to mention Hydrocarbon Accountant pun akan merasa sadding too tongue.gif

I guess whatever your position on-field/off-field all peoples in this industry play its vital roles too. O&G is an integrated supply chain across the organization, be it Upstream and Downstream.

Agree with u. Everyone have their roles and responsibilities. For me as technical person, learn from field is the best. Only thing is, there are many type of field, procurement field is different tongue.gif , same goes to IT field. Previously i don't really hv time for documentation, but when join OnG, document also play important role and I got chance to experience these. "Decision maker" not all of them have experience at field, some hv few years, but still they are the one who make decision.

p/s : I still need procurement to purchase whatever I need for my works

With recent oil price slumped, this trigger us that technical and hands on skill are really important. As most people that worked in O&G can't really work in other fields. Like Shell's IT are the best example.

Totally agree with you. Working in the office does not mean someone is stupid or less important compared to working out in the field. In Oil and Gas business it is all about collaboration and harnessing the knowledge of people from different functions.

People in the field know best to execute work. People in the office have their unique role to plan and strategize.

Geologist and reservoir engineers are first to build the plan to produce oil.
*
Agreed. It is all about integration of knowledge, skills and experiences across all disciplines be it client, contractor, fabricator, vendor, service company consultant and etc, upstream and downstream, subsurface, surface, office and field.

Engineer in office might not good to know how people in field doing installation, commissioning, maintenance works for example servicing rotor or whatever of the pumps, procedure to install and start up the pumps step by step. But maybe they good in design the pumps, determine type of pumps to be used (centrifugal, reciprocal, submersible, positive placement pumps??),calculate pump head, pumps control philosophy, pumps capacity considering overall plant requirement and arrangement, interfacing with piping, material, design and code of standard, environment and safety ??
I am not expecting all the people who do maintenance works in field, replace the pipe, flange, gasket, do insulation and etc to know how to calculate pressure loss across the pipe, pipe thickness and etc?

Well, this is very diverse industry. There are many areas to discover and learn.

Aku terasa jugak, kerja bagai nak rak prepare FDP, bersengkang mata buat materials for Board approval, mcm nak pengsan hadap perangai project partner Carigali and owner Petronas in all MR1 to MR5 gates, just to get a project sanction so that a platform can be built and installed offshore and for some people in here to have "field experience" and working opportunities offshore.

Yup. Pi laaa cari gali minyak tanpa engineers yg cuma duduk di office. blink.gif

Learn from field are better, atleast the skill is yours.
Well, without them, people can still discover oil. So don't talk like without them, nobody can drill oil out.
What type of IT system? They only need old school system to show them the flow, temperature and pressure. Do they need Windows 8 for tat?
*
Thought they need the system to maintain the rig in order for the rig to float? hmm.gif

Experience operators will know what to do.
As the engineers or who ever will just give orders. Once the rig are in operation, it can't be simply shutdown.
Some may say they are important, but again they are just doing wayang kulit. That's the reason why O&G companies can simply cut down the man power especially those that are sitting in the office is because all knows that most people in the office are taking blind salary.

Seem like O&G is not doing good due to low crude oil prices globally.

I thought they were employed by Shell and been sub to HP? SO technically, still Shell's employee right?

Nope, in front of the world they are Shell employee, but the payroll is HP. I have a friend worked there before and jump ship to a company that really doing IT business, Microsoft. He was not happy to his previous employer, just "sell" them to HP and give almost nothing.

Google for Kongsberg RTO drilling.

Kongsberg group is a very big, dispersed subsidiaries for many businesses.

10 years back, working in O&G are better than work as government servant.
But today, I can tell you that, no business will give you 100% security.
