Cheese... got loads of salt. I rarely feed cheese... maybe 4 times a year only.
If you want to feed safe cheese, feed cottage cheese. Actually, there is no need to give them cheese lah... if you still want, once a week... And half a piece is wayyyy too much. I feed 2cm pieces at one time to each hamster. 2cm is the most. The salt in cheese is no good for hamsters. If you wanna treat nice food, give boiled chicken, holistic dog kibble, hard boiled eggs.... unsweeten cereal, a variety of vegies... nuts like cashews. Grains and cooked rice. I feed mine boiled beans sometimes.... but no kidney beans, only soya, black eyed beans and black beans... |

Can go to 3 years if taken good care. Average is around 2 to 2.5 years.

QUOTE(joanalooidog @ Nov 16 2006, 11:43 AM) Wats the breed of this kind of hamsters?? Like has longer ears than the WW, looks more like a mouse...... That is a Russian campbell. Already said, Petshop hamsters are very likely to bite due to mishandling and no kind and gentle human contact. So of course they bite. That is why we should get from breeders. The ears appear longer now, but when adult their bodies will go in proportion along with the ears.![]() I've been bitten by these types in when I'm trying to touch one of these in the pet shop..... |

There are a few rare hamsters that can do that but not all. Also to walk freely can be dangerous... imagine the wires, dust... well, it's up to the owner but to me, I wouldn't let my hamster walk all around my room even if it knows it's name and comes when called. Just better be safe than sorry loh...

To me, the 1st is WW but after that all look like campbells... The others dun have the arch markings on the side which WWs have.... campbells don't really have. I just assume 1st is WW and the rest all campbells....
Or the 2nd one could be a hybrid. |

QUOTE(joanalooidog @ Nov 18 2006, 06:37 PM) Can a male WW stay alone? no companion can?? The answer is YES! Why you do not want to believe a single WW can live alone? Singaporeans do it... I don't see why we also cannot practice it. It is way safer for hamsters to live alone. Always a risk to let them be in pairs or groups.I really wan to breed my WW lah(my fren wan a litter).....every time i put male and female togeether, the female will definately chase the male, and the male will be lying on its back "screaming"......how ah....... If your friend wants a hamster, then get from someone who has a litter. Breed only for a purpose that is right, like according to standard or temperament... Or breed for a particular colour.... but breed coz a friend wants.... a dwarf already can produce up to 10 babies... so what you do with the 10 babies? Too many people have been breeding without a purpose liao.... I breed but trying to breed out more pearls and quality WW with nice body shape and face. I breed campbells because of the colour and temperment quality they have which is very rare in campbells. Not trying to say breeding is bad but putting 1 male with 2 females is really a bad idea.... and 2 pregnant females would be worst coz they will fight since pregnant WW females become aggressive during pregnancy. And when you have seperated the females, there is no going back into reintroducing them since they are likely to fight also, very little chance of them getting along again. So in the end you end up with more cages and more single hamsters.... If the female is chasing the male, then it really do not like the male. The easiest hamster to breed is the Syrian while the hardest hamsters to breed are WW, Robos and Campbells coz if they do not like their partner then they will not breed. |

QUOTE(steventan85 @ Nov 18 2006, 08:25 PM) my male hamster looks like scared of me .....alwaz run as faster as he can when i wanna catch him out or wanna feed him Handle him.... If you think he is scared of your hands, then you catch him with a cup. So in his mind, cup is sort of like the stranger lah hahaha... the one that catches it. Then you put the hamster on your palm and hold it... this is my method... I do everyday and then it now got used to me catching it like that.any idea can tame him back ? Treat him good meal ? The guidance given by hamster websites is that you handfeed it often. Put your hand inside the cage for 10 minutes a day and don't touch it. Just put it there. They will appear scared but after you do everyday for 10 minutes... it will get used to it. Then you can start again this process by putting some food on your palm. Do it everyday for 10 minutes also until they not scared and will climb your palm to eat. Don't make sudden movement. Do this everyday also until you notice that they got confidence with your hand around. Then you can slowly move your hands a bit, maybe touch them and hold them shortly while all in the cage. Once successful, then can try take it out of the cage and hold... a long process but it is really nice to have a hamster that you can cuddle and softly squeeze hahahah... |

QUOTE(kembara @ Nov 19 2006, 12:21 AM) just got my syrian today after a tired and hungry journey to kl hehe Hahaha... he is jumpy jumpy but don't worry. Handle him daily then he should be ok. It will take you some time loh but it would be worth all the trouble when you see him grow big hahahah.... btw thanks a lot to our sifu crazymouse who got him for me.. cute little boy hehe QUOTE(joanalooidog @ Nov 19 2006, 12:29 AM) I see, coz i read in the internet, WW are social animals, so i thought they might actually live in pairs, same or diff sex. They are social... all dwarfs are social but then not every dwarf can get along... they can live alone also. As long you provide a wheel, a hide house and you handle him a few times a day, he would be ok. I keep some of my females and males alone. They live happily and fat. Both my female chase the male like hell once i put them in the male cage one by one.Male scream and hide.......So i just quickly take them out.....hai....think needs more time....... Anyway, thanks for the advice........ QUOTE(Reanne @ Nov 19 2006, 06:51 AM) Ish... so cute.... must keep the most orange looking one hahahaha....Muffin is so territorial... wonder how to find him a mate LOL... His lil sis is growing beautifully, naming her Cookie LOL... all also after food... Pau(dad), Muffin(son) and Cookie(daughter) wahahahah |

To avoid being bitten, rub your fingers with their wood shavings to hide the smell.

Lah... see, buy 2 hamsters really can cause problems if do not get a good pair... you will never have problems if the cage is really big or if you got a large tank.
I can have 4 campbells happily live in a double storey critter trail cage with the look out box... perfect harmony but a few arguements here and there. Do get large tanks or storage boxes, cheaper and less headache wan lah. |

QUOTE(prelude23 @ Nov 26 2006, 03:31 AM) Hi there! Today I went to the pets wonderland at Midvalley and saw them selling this local Dwarfs... Those small and cute animals that's similar to hamster... a) There are Roborovski dwarf hamsters. The smallest and the most timid. Shy and scared, cannot be handled often and harder to tame since so skittish. My question is, a) Is this dwarfs a type of hamster or they are a type of their own? b) Do they smell bad? c) Is their diet troublesome? d) Can they be put with gerbils? Hope those pro and experience pets enthusiast can help me bout this... Thanks! There is Winter White hamtsers, also a dwarf. Can change their fur colour to white or light grey when cold and dark. There is Russian Campbell dwarf. They come in many colours.... NEVER MIX any of these breeds together... very very bad. b) Yes, hamsters do smell coz of their pee. They drink more water, pee more and normally the cage will smell in 5 days then you gotta change the bedding. c) Their diet is very simple. PLease read the links on the 1st page for hamster care. Already diet has been discussed a few times. Just read this whole thread to know if you are eager enough. d) NEVER EVER PUT GERBILS WITH HAMSTERS. 1 would die.... |

Ikano sells Woody Pet. I would suggest to mix Woody pet coz it is hard on their feet a bit. You can get hold of Chipsi or Delikate at Ikano also. Then you mix. Woody Pet absorbs urine a lot while the wood shavings can act as a cushion for their feet and make a nest.
But Woody Pet is not suitable for gerbils since gerbils dig and burrow. |
