QUOTE(dscythe @ Oct 30 2006, 03:52 PM)
i'm using delikate soft wood shavings... although its did not stated of pine or what, I assumed its pine as same color & look with other brand using pine shaving. Ministry of Pets forumers recommended Breeder's choice cat litter as bedding since it's made of recycle paper & organic, but expensive for 2l = RM21.90. Other cat litter from japan just cost RM15.00 for 5l  sweat.gif  but not sure can use or not.

Came across woody pet... can use meh? The hammies won't eat them? will choose if it is safe coz cheaper than breeder's choice cat litter - thanxs
*
Woody pet is safe to use. It is a good bedding lah.... Ya, Delikate never state what wood... same with many other types of bedding. Yes, Breeder's Choice is good but I don't think available in many shops. Stick to Woody Pet lah, hamster won't eat it. I use Woody Pet for my Tortoise.

Congrats rclxms.gif

You can feed dog kibble. Go and ask for sample packets and feed loh. You can feed cooked chicken and fish also. If possible, a few mealworms a day.

QUOTE(Suet @ Oct 31 2006, 12:04 PM)
If she shuns the egg, give her other stuff like boiled unsalted chicken as treat. Fruits are okay in moderation too. smile.gif

hun: I wanna see Muffin~!! XD
*
Lah, I got no new pics hahahah.... later lah, you see Muffin boy heheheh....

QUOTE(prophet007 @ Oct 31 2006, 12:28 PM)
will the hay harm the dwarf's eye? i mean the end of hay may poke their eyes.
*
Well, not really. Hamsters enjoy the comfy feeling of hay as nesting material and chewing material... also, hamsters won't poke themselves.

QUOTE(shinobikit @ Oct 31 2006, 03:41 PM)
argh!!!!

my WW dunno wat happen... look like sick already.. his abdomen's part no more fur!!!! arh!!! look like swollen already... how come ah? skin desease?

Hmmm.... I got similar thing.... then I changed the bedding then ok liao. It is either the bedding too dirty or it is allergic to the wood.

Hybrid mah.... Hybrids got tendency to either be infertile or something weak in their genetics.... never breed hybrids.

will it oily for them ?

i juz refer to the previous post that we can feed dog pellet to hamster .....but dunno whether is same as dog biscuit....
*
Dog pellet is also called Kibble and biscuit. Yes, it is good for hamsters. Not too oily for them. It gives them protein and minerals.

I plan to use plain paper as their temporary bedding as the shader wood was leave at my hometown...is it ok? I will use the wood soon after i get it back form hometown next week...

and for the water , instead of using the bottle , can i put it in a bowl ?
*
Plain paper won't absorb the pee. PUt some tissue, at least it can absorb the pee.

Bowl is not so good. SOme hamsters can drown in water bowl while some become wet, catch cold and fall sick. In the mean time, you watch them drink. You place the bowl of water and jaga them. Once they finish drinking then you take out the bowl. Do this twice a day.

QUOTE(joanne871207 @ Nov 3 2006, 12:23 AM)
means???blind??
ned 2 put any medicine???or juz bring it 2 VET?
*
If it is an ulcer, need vet. If it is cataract... then no need go Vet loh, coz they won't do operation on such a small creature,.... and it would cost a lot of $$$...

You can treat it yourself, you can go pharmacy and buy artificial tears eye drop. Don't get eyemo... get other brands...

Yah, that's the one... I didn't see these wheels in Midvalley... also long time never go 1U ahahah... but it is a cheap and good wheel.

But I think the size too small for Syrian hamster, even they put picture of Syrian for the yellow wheel, but it feels cramp.

I bought the large 8.5 inch comfort wheel... expensive but my hamster loves it!

Btw, I just bought another 2 winters. Previosly i hv to males, now to females, but separated cage.....
HOw to clean them, got smell lah........
I notice that male tends to be more active, more fierce, bite more, as the female is tamer.....normal ?
Later try to put them together, 1male 1 female in one cage, and get baby hammies!!!
How long should the babies been separated with their mum? 7weeks?
*
Every hamster has their own attitude. Not all are tame. It just so happen your males are aggressive. This is due to bad upbringing when they were younger. All my winter white hamsters are very gentle, never bite at all. Normally seperate from mom at 6 weeks. 7 weeks, you may see the male pups start to hump their mom hahaah....

wah... urs drawf can produce so many babies...  rclxms.gif

mine just gave birth to 5 oni...

btw... im quite interested to knw the maximum babies tat u guys have at 1 time are how many aR??? (drawf)

10? or more than 10?
*
For Syrians, it's normal to have 10 or more... but the best would be 6 to 8 babies since they get more milk.

For Dwarfs, normally 6 to 8 is an average litter size.... but I prefer 4 to 6 babies since the mom can really take care and nurse well. The problem with big litters is that the babies tend to not get enough milk and since hamsters are dedicated moms, it can cause the female to become skinny from nursing so many.

how come my syrians only had 4babies for her first batch and 5 babies for her second batch??.... so little... i dont dare let her have 3rd batch.... afraid she is too old... she is now 1yr plus almost 2yrs old adi....

my housemate's syrians also only had 4babies for his hamster's first batch....
*
Average litter is around 6... less is good mah, more milk for the babies. I have seen my friend's Syrian hamster have 10 to 13 babies. Anyway, never breed a hamster that is more than 1 year old... a danger to both mom and babies' lives.

how many inches should a 3 mths old syrian is?
*
Foo, roughly almost 5 inches like that.

QUOTE(joanalooidog @ Nov 9 2006, 09:42 AM)
i read thru this thread, saying that syrians are territorial hams, but when i go the pet shops. all the syrians are cage together, mayb 10 of them. I ask the SA whether can cage them together, they say can, will not fight, bla bla bla.........

Honestly can or not??
*
Petshops staff just sell stuff, the owners never visit forums or do research. So you wanna trust them? They will even tell you can put anything together, as long make you happy and make you buy.

Syrians are solitary. Of course when they are below 4 months old they don't really care if got cage mates but when they are older, they feel uneasy, insecure and threaten if housed with other Syrians.

Also, Syrians sleep during the day, you go petshop all also drowsy with sleep lah, they only fight at night, when the shop is closed and you can't see.

Petshops house everything together coz lack of space. If they got 30 syrians, then need 30 cages, they won't have the space or the money to actually open 30 cages just for selling 30 hamsters. So for them, more logical to house everything in 1 or 2 cages.
