Reports say 2 Ukraine Air Force Su-24 shot down near Debaltsevo

Unconfirmed reports say 2 Ukrainian Air Force Su-24 'Frogfoot' ground attack planes were shot down yesterday after attempting to attack the pro-Russian separatist positions encircling Debaltsevo. The losses would undoubtedly be a major loss for the Ukraine government forces.

Military experts say the pro-Russian separatists have, with Russian materiel and technical support, established a relatively comprehensive anti-aircraft 'umbrella' over much of the important and strategic locations in the DNR and LNR. Experts speculate the introduction of increased numbers of Buk M1 medium-range SAM and Igla short-range missiles from Russia have turned the airspace over the DNR and LNR as a "virtual no-fly zone".

A bit suspicious, Pantsir seems too advanced to be supplied to ukraine separatists. It's akin to supplying them the latest T-90 tanks instead of T-64 made in the 1970s. It would be too obvious to deny or ignore, instead of supplying them older systems to maintain 'plausible deniability' i.e "They were captured from ukraine government armory".

The initial plan was for a armed heli gunship instead of a anti-tank heli. More of anti-personnel.

MD Helicopters debuts at LIMA15 with famous “Little Bird”



MD Helicopters, known from the “Little Bird” helicopter based on the legendary Hughes 500 design – will debut on this year’s LIMA’15 Maritime and Aerospace event in Langkawi, Malaysia. The contribution was confirmed by Mr. Ahmad Dzuhri, Managing Director of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition.

It will give the American manufacturer another opportunity to promote its newest MD 540A. The light attack helicopter has a single engine and is especially handy as a relatively low-cost solution for armed aerial escort, special operations and close air support. Among its standard weaponry are Hellfire missiles, guided rockets, 7.62 mm and .50 caliber machine guns.

The MD Helicopters family includes the twin-engine MD Explorer and other single engine versions of the MD 600N, MD 520N, MD 500E, MD530F and MD 530G. Especially the MD500 series is popular amongst law enforcement agencies in the US. Moreover, the Afghan Air Force ordered 12 new choppers based on the US Army’s OH-6 Cayuse last year plus the weaponization of all 17 MD530Fs in Afghan Air Force service.

In Asia military Defender versions of the type are in use by the Japan Ground Self Defense Force and the Republic of China Navy (Taiwan).

Singapore Buys AMRAAMs To Kill Pirates and Terrorists

The DSCA announcement for the AMRAAM sale cited Singapore’s “contributions to counter-piracy and counterterrorism efforts” that “continue to stabilize a critical chokepoint where much of the world’s goods and services transit en route to and from the Asia Pacific region.”

It is unclear how the Singaporeans will use 100 AMRAAMs against pirates and terrorists, and the DSCA announcement fails to mention other possible potential enemies, such as Indonesia and Malaysia who are also interested in procuring U.S. fighters and weapons.

Singapore has always shied away from identifying potential threats from Indonesia and Malaysia. As one U.S. defense analyst in Singapore said, “As I said to others, one AMRAAM could’ve taken out Johnny Depp and the entire Pirates of the Caribbean.”
