Iran to Unveil New Missile Defense System

Tehran plans to introduce a new missile defense system on April 18, on the occasion of the Army Day in Iran, said Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli, the commander of the Iranian Air Defense Force, according to Fars News Agency.

Iranian-made missile defense system called the Talash 3, also known as Endeavor-3, is capable of shooting down targets at a range of more than 200 kilometers.

“The capability and might of the Armed Forces, specially Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base, will be displayed to the enemies again and we will once again see tumult among the ill-wishers,” Esmayeeli said.

According to Esmayeeli, Iran already has the safest airspace in the Middle East, with 3,600 locations spots under its control. The country aims to increase the number to 5,000 locations in the future.

The Brigadier General also added that Iran is currently working to launch several new hi-tech radar systems, capable of tracing and identifying small flying objects.

“Arash 2 radar system with the capability of discovering small flying objects which is based on the world’s state-of-the-art technology is one of the latest achievements,” Esmayeeli said.

While tracing enemy drones, Iran also plans to increase the production of its own Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), as the country’s Air Defense Force announced last month. Last November, Iran unveiled its newly developed drone named “Ababil 3” that can fly for eight hours non-stop on the altitude of 4,500 kilometers (15,000 feet).

Got too many initial problems that need fixing, even this stage of development it's projected that F-35 development cost have increased from $177 Billion USD to $331 Billion USD due to increased costs (even F-22 only cost $66 Billion USD in development cost, it's already damned expensive at $150 Million USD per plane).

Some experts project the final cost at production stage may reach Trillions of USDs. The fear is that incremental increases of cost potentially make the F-35 prohibitively too expensive for most users in the end. Who can afford to buy a $400 million USD fighter plane?

This f35 really like songlap all the $$$

Only 1 plane for so many roles

No competition

Europe lazy develop 5th Gen fighter to butlick the usa
Left Russia china and USA 5th Gen fighters

What ever happened to Europe
Gripen, Rafael, Eurofighter all not 5 th gen
Seriously? After the above 3 there is no new jet from euro? That's sad future will be filled with lemons or triangles

I read somewhere the other day that pentagon is splashing another 1.5 trillion on f35

Not sure for acquisition or for further development.

Will try to find back source to share.

MRCA: And Then There Were Five?

Marhalim Abas
March 8, 2015

SHAH ALAM: JUST when I thought that the MRCA programme will be delayed indefinitely due to the economic uncertainties, something came up out of the blue.

Yes it may just be another PR blitz for LIMA 15 but I have been told that the MRCA programme has a new suitor, the Lockheed Martin F-16 Falcon. A suitor? Simply because there is no official word that it had been accepted as a candidate for the programme which is currently under abeyance.

Details remained sketchy but I am told that the variant offered to RMAF is the F-16V – Viper the latest generation Falcon which is fitted with an AESA radar. According to the Lockheed Martin website, the Viper is available as a new production or as an upgrade programme.

“The F-16V provides pilots with enhanced situational awareness and increased combat capability, by including features such as an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, advanced mission computer, and Centre Pedestal Display.”

For the record, LM did not enter the F-16 for the MRCA programme when it was initially launched some two or four years ago ( based on who you asked). The recent overture I believed is more likely due to the sudden availability of newly-build F-16s originally ordered by Egypt and Iraq. As delivery for these airframes are problematic due to various reasons, they need to find options. These Falcons need to be upgraded first to be called Vipers with the above items of course.

It is likely that the offer will include new built F16s and second-hand airframes which will allow for a greater number of aircraft and more palatable to the bean counters. Furthermore I am told that the offer comes together with a financing and off-set package that may be used as a reference for the MRCA programme even if the aircraft itself is not selected.

For the record, the official MRCA candidates are the Boeing Super Hornet, Dassault Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and Saab Gripen.

Like the Super Hornets, the F-16 factory is set to close down within the next year or so as orders had dwindled considerably within the last few years. The only new build F-16s currently on the shop floor are those meant for Iraq which looking less likely to be delivered day-by-day.

It is projected that current F-16s will be retired by 2030.

Ah, the uncertainty things, perhaps even the Russians will make a last minute pitch for more MKMs!. The only thing certain for now is that it is unlikely that we will know the fate of the MRCA programme during LIMA 15.

f22 is way way better than f35, they should just focus on f22 but instead a new program that is f35

if only f22 was the one they sell, i reckon msia should get it but instead this lousy f35

so for us i believe pak fa is the answer for 5th gen fighter in the future, for now we need to buy(mrca) to replace the current f5 and mig29n soon to decommision

It's because it was so good that Congress refuse to sell the F-22 to a foreign customer. Beside, not many country can afford the maintenance cost of the F-22. I heard it require an air-conditioned hangar.

They think it too good even for their allies but again its stealth technology was designed to counter russian sam in the 90s..

Any new generation sam would be able to adress current stealth technology.

Once f22 is detected. It still have to fall back to dogfights

F35 is more rubbish than f22.

Overpriced, over budget and over hypes
Russian is laughing all the way. Why develop new platform instead improving current. T50 design very simlar to su 27 design with improvement and added stealth capabilities

T50 is a better budget 5th gen for us compare to that two problematic planes.

Saudi Arabia beat India Becomes largest defence market for US

In 2014, global defence trade increased for the sixth straight year to $64.4 billion, up from $56.8 billion. “Defence trade rose by a landmark 13.4 percent over the past year,” said Ben Moores, senior defence analyst at IHS Aerospace, Defence & Security.

“This record figure has been driven by unparalleled demand from the emerging economies for military aircraft and an escalation of regional tensions in the Middle East and Asia Pacific.”  Highlights from the IHS Global Defence Trade Report:  Saudi Arabia topped India to become the largest defence market for US; The US supplied one-third of all exports and was the main beneficiary of growth; Saudi Arabia and UAE imported more than all of Western Europe;

China is now the third largest importer of defence equipment, up from fifth; South Korea is the rising star of Asia Pacific exports; Despite a record 2014, Russian defence exports are set to drop; Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Sweden and Nigeria are the UK’s top trading partners.
