Hi Mujinkun, welcome to the world of planted tank smile.gif

I'd suggest to read more about planted tank online such as plantedtank.net/forums/, check out the journal section.

Depend on the plant you want and tank size, it can be quite ex and can be quite cheap. You can check out ADA comprehensive products. For me, I go for the cheapo route smile.gif There's always cheaper CO2 tank, filters, soil, nutrient around. I'd suggest drop by a local fish shop such as aquacult, fish depot, they will explain to you also.

anyone have ideas how to kill off hair algae?

its really bothering me alot.
*
I had 2 outbreak before and I use black out method to get rid of it. First, clean the hair algae as much as possible manually, do a WC and then cover it pitch black for 3 days (no nutrient dosing, no co2 and no light). After 3 days, do a WC, dose nutrient, excel (if you have), run co2 and turn on light (6hours) normally for 3 days. Observe if hair algae receded, otherwise repeat the same steps again.

From my experience, blackout works like a charm. After the 3 days black out, you should also see crystal clear water and glass. This method is effective for green spot and green dust algae too.

Good luck!

I think away from window will be better. At least you have more control over the temperature and light by eliminating the external factors (window light/heat).

Just want to share my experience with BBA.

Since end of last year, my Anubias nana pettite has been infested by Black Beard Algae pretty badly, trimming won't work. The worst thing is when BBA started to grow on my fissiden as well which is kinda annoying.

Last week, I decided to do something about it drastically:-
- WC 60%
- I lowered the water level, as low as possible, then use Flourish Excel 1:1 with water to do a spot treatment on Anubias. After around 2 mins, I rinsed it with the tank water.
- I trimmed BBA that grow on fissiden. Do not use excel spot treatment on any type of mosses, it will kill your mosses

It's pretty effective. Just after a few days of observation, I can see BBA, turn white/dark red and receded. Those badly affected Anubias leaves are now clear of BBA and Green Spot Algae.

Just becareful, make sure there's no shrimps or fishes around when doing spot treatment. Turn off filter, watch out for nearby mosses.

Good luck!

Hi,newbie here .i jz start my tank within a month.
Those algae starts appear last two week ago,I'm using toothbrush reomove them last week .
Within 3days they appear again.

Any solution for this algae?
Is tat green brush algae?

As far as I know, I think there's no such thing called green brush algae :-)

Toothbrush works great, and if you do 1/3 WC 2-3 times a week, it will be gone too.

I am battling with green hair algae everyday. Lol. Its everywhere and, like urself, been using my old toothbrush to pull it out of my tank
*
Just make sure it's not blanket weed, it's freaking hard to remove them! If green hair algae, blackout routine will pretty much get rid of it.

Oh, no wonder its nicer. Mine is around 80 cents per shrimp. Haha! Hmm.. I've read that color/ rainbow shrimps eat shrimplets. Is it true?

Anyway, I manage to manually remove all the hair algae from the java ferns smile.gif
Here's my tank without hair algae.. Else, so ugly with black clouds of bba. Had to use dark photo effect to lower glare.

I have a 2ft with many cherry shrimps and tetras. I used Excel to spot treat BBA in 1:1 with water which grow on my anubias leaves and some of my stones. Did it once and it's all clear. Just make sure shrimp isn't around the proximity and watch for moss, they will go brown. After that do a WC. Switch off filter before that too.

For hair algae, a blackout routine will work like a charm if you want to clear it entirely.

Hey guys, this is my planted tank. Started with dry start method back in november last year, failed miserably. This is my 3rd rescape. Learned a lot each time my tank fails.  sweat.gif

tank size: 5 gallon tank fluval spec V
substrate: amazonia only, didnt cycle tank, didnt do anything just pour and go.
co2 pressurized
Chiller 200W peltier type to keep my tank 25C <--- needed to since my tank area is directly facing west, temperature fluctuate up to 32C whenever it's sunny time.
modified ei dosing, based on my whims. Still learning

Anyway the first pic was back in 8th Feb hair algae explosion, did a lot of noob mistakes and made things worse.

23th Feb Decided to use anti algae medicament, kill them all first then plant new plants to stabilize the tank, lastly will stop the anti algae.

Last pic is 19th March, a week after major water change, algae medication stopped 1 week before water change. surprisingly once the tank stabilize algae did not bloom again. I got occasional hair algae after subsequent water change but not severe, added 2 amano shrimp last week which cleared every hair algae in the tank. I think i won the algae war. lol rclxms.gif

Well done smile.gif It's a great joy to win an algae war and you will learn along the way to treat different type of algae.

+1 to that. Remove any snails you see in your tank before it's too late.

Pond snail. Just as Terria said, remove it as soon as possible. Even if it's Apple snails, it's something you should consider to keep or not, they breed like crazy.

I can understand your situation. I did the same and let it roaming around my tank when I first had it as well smile.gif Still look cute when it had a few babies, and then 2-3 weeks later, things are out of control...

Hi terrie,

May I ask where did you top up your CO2? I'm also looking for other places to top up.

Also, what plants are you interested in? I'm not interested in trading, but I usually give away my excess. Just PM me.

I also will have many PRL shrimps soon (A/S grade and also Hinomaru/No Entry) - many babies now (from 2mm to 1cm) as one time 4 were berried. If anyone interested to pick up PRL (CRS) shrimps, just PM me. These are not free though.

Here's the cheapest and fastest place to fill in CO2, in Taman Sungai Besi:
https://www.google.com.my/maps/place/Syarik...1.7000277?hl=en

It's the fire extinguisher company. Just tell them you're here to refill CO2 for fish tank. I paid rm12 last time and it only took less than 5 mins. I asked the uncle why he doesn't need to freeze it and refill it a few times, he said it's because most fish shops don't have the compressor to pump the CO2 into the tank.

I'm giving away 3 Nerite snails, anyone interested? Nerite snail is a hardworking algae eater. They won't breed as if there's no tomorrow like apple snails.
if you have green dust algae on your glass, nerite snails are really effective way to remove them. Instead of wiping your tank glass, you can enjoy your tank smile.gif

Pick up only, location near NSK Kuchai Lama

Apple snails breed like pond snails. I didn't buy it, but I got it from a plant and for one time, I think I have over 50+ of them in my nano tank. Utterly disgusting but it keeps my tank super clean smile.gif
