Sifus, should I on my tank filter 24 hours a day? I think my filter is a bit strong for my fish in the middle tank, top and bottom are OK, somehow i feel that it is harder for fishes to sleep if filter on. :S. Haha

I have Guppies and Tetra only

My friend told me for Guppies and Tetra, I dun need to have any filter...

And i bought 2 sponge filters and also a duo-pump, on delivery. I am very new to fish hobby..
Please 'scold' me for any mistake.

but be careful not to confuse it with SAE, siamese algae eater as they look much the same. oto are more gentle compared to them.

Sifu, the purpose for me to get oto is to clean my algae, does it means oto wont clean so well as compare to SAE?

I visit a aqua shop in taman desa yesterday, i bought few lava rock, coral, a stone (rm9/KG), and ph tester from them, they give me a lot of advice, and they have plenty of aqua plant, very nice shop to visit, stayed there for almost 2 hours to chit chat after work.

I am waiting for their ADA soil to arrive, so i can start my own aqua plant.....

Cory is different fish, they don't eat algae on glass, they eat scrap food on bottom only.

New into this aquarium and wanna share about my attempt to set up this tank ystd. Went to nsk kuchai to buy the materials which are flourite sand 1kg, amazonia soil 5kg (used roughly 4kg), HC x 1, rotala rotundifolia green rotala sp vietnam one each, and ludwigia sp super red. Thought starting this hobby would only cost around rm50-80 but I was wrong haha. I have a 1.5 ft tank, driftwood, led light and HOB.

Was told to wash the flourite before adding amozonia soil but I totally forgot it. Was to excited to set up the tank. But I guess there's no way for me wash it after adding all the soil so I just left it as it is.

This afternoon I did water change because there seems to be alot impurities floating the water. And I did not release the bubbles when I first soak the substrate so I did one round of bubble releasing though there are still bubbles trapped in the substrate. I added a buddha face for decoration, moved the hc and replanted some of the plants as floats up again. I have a bad feeling of the plants surviving. Did not turn on the HOB as the current is too strong and disrupts the setup in tank so probably will not use HOB.

Currently there no fauna in the tank yet except for one or two snails. Read earlier in the thread to BUNUH without mercy but I still left it there. Or should I just remove it now haha.

I am aiming for a lowtech tank or better yet, a close to self sustaining tank. Will add in my betta and maybe otto and shrimps. Not sure whether this is realistic or not.

is it possible to buy from a local fish shop this biomedia? someone told me can buy sponge from them, put in air pump and then just let all the bacteria spread in your tank?

I jst fill my plants with water just now. How long should I wait before I can add in some fishes? I am thinking to get ember tetra/similar tiny fishes.

Very funny...all snail were scared from eaten by him and just floating/playing at surface.   

Last week I was tired trying to catch CAE and now catch snails.

too much food n they tends to breed. mine from 4 become around 20+,  in the end had to gip away to ppl

Hi All,

I am planning to set up a low tech tank. Need advise on lighting.
I plan to use LED T8 tubes, maybe 2 or 3 tubes with 6500k. Am I able to grow plants like anubias, java moss/fern, crypts?
And will stock tank with corydoras. I still cant seem to find suitable sand substrate for them. Please advise. Thank you

P.S: I am trying to budget myself on cheap sand substrate, not planing to go for aqua soil or expensive stuff.
