I think I'll go with the floodlights. If it gets hot (hopefully not!) then better DIY a cooling fan as well. Hahaha!  rclxub.gif
*
in our climate, cooling fan is a big PLUS for your tank..if you can diy a pc fan, it would probably cost you less than rm10 if you just recycle some stuff and buy a new pc fan..about the heat from the lighting, just dont put it too near to the surface..maybe around 6"to 1' is ok..

tips: for floodlight, maybe you need 20w per 1ft tank..so if you have 3ft then 3x20w floodlight or 6x10w floodlight..

I'm giving away 3 Nerite snails, anyone interested? Nerite snail is a hardworking algae eater. They won't breed as if there's no tomorrow like apple snails.
if you have green dust algae on your glass, nerite snails are really effective way to remove them. Instead of wiping your tank glass, you can enjoy your tank smile.gif

Pick up only, location near NSK Kuchai Lama

i bought 2 of it..put it in a comm tank with other fish and apple snail..unfortunately, apple snail breed like crazy until some of the plant damaged..so i put an assassin snail and hope he will not kill nerite since it too big compare his..but both of the nerite snail died..not sure who kills it, but most probably it was the assassin snail..now only the shell is there at the bottom of the tank.. sad.gif

So tempting. But I'm just afraid my assassin snails might kill them instead so I better not allow them to commit murder.
*
better not..or you can take out assassin snail out 1st, let them do the cleaning..and when other snail overpopulated, re-introduce assassin snail and transfer nerite to other tank..

but the problem is, my assassin snail also breeding in the other tank..haih..

i suggest you eliminate apple snail into 0%. i prefer 0 risk lol.

i think assassin snail can also eat other things. google it up
*
they need protein rich diet to breed (ie: snails)..can also eat leftover food, fishflake, dead fish, algae if they starving and etc..maybe i just feed them snail until they are ready to letgo for others hobbyist..

Hi all, after few days of extensive reading and YouYube-ing, I'm interested to dip my feet into this hobby - the picture that has given me inspiration:

I like the Iwagumi concept, and I could just watch the Youtube videos of Iwagumi tanks for hours!

So, with Iwagumi concept in mind, I'm going to start small, this is what I have in mind - just focal rock with Monte Carlo plant as carpet, stabilise the system first for few months before adding shrimps:

user posted image

I've decided to get these equipments - I'm willing to spend ~RM600ish for total startup cost - let me know your thoughts:

Glass Tank:

Fluval Spec 5 gallon (~20 liter) approx RM400.
Would LOVE ADA tanks, but when considering separate external filter + lighting system, I guess I'll get this for upgrade in future when I fully grasp the whole idea.

Substrate
ADA Amazonian? Do I need extra boost?

Co2 System

Ok this is what I need your help with - I'm planning to put this in my bedroom, which has a lot of big windows with UV film + thin transparent curtains.
Although I'm going to put the tank on the corner where direct sunlight does not hit - it will still get indirect sunlight as the bedroom is bright during the day.
I read that high light needs high Co2. Ok, I can put in Co2 system.

I think I'm going for pressurised Co2 tank system - as I occasionally travel for work (~4 weeks at a time) so DIY yeast/sugar is not feasible.
I found this method here which I think is good, but requires extensive DIY. Is this what you guys are using? Especially in Malaysia, how easy to buy the Co2 cylinder? Is there any suggestions where I can get the regulators, valve, etc hardware (Kajang/KL)?

Flora

Monte Carlo carpet and some dark coloured rocks - will see what I find in fish shop smile.gif
I hope I'm not missing anything else - appreciate your feedback!  thumbsup.gif

thats is a bit small..if you want small tank, better dont buy those so called aquarium kit..

Pro of the kit: all in one..tidy..
Con of the kit: hard to upgrade as your ambition grows..limit your equipment..

yes, it tidy with the kits..but if you go for separate item, you can just upgrade certain item as you like..let say you lighting is not enough, then go buy new lighting set, old one can sell to others..let say filter just so-so only, then go upgrade new one..old one still sellable..later want bigger tank, then go buy new tank, those item still can be used as an additional system..

but if you bought the kit, then who want to buy your filter since it not compatible with normal tank..

that still depend on you wallet..just giving opinion..no harm at all with the kits..but my concern is, if you want to do proper carpet (not seed) you need quite high co2+light system, medium also can, but might affecting their growth, and im not sure if the lighting with the kit is enough..

anyone can correct me if im wrong.. smile.gif

EDIT: 2ft or more would be adequate for starter to fully amaze with a carpet setup..

Those semi-transparent flat piece of acrylic that protects the fluorescent light from being hit with water. Mine got blurred through time. Similar effect from the stains from the water surface. This stain on the acrylic is causing the light intensity to reduce. Wanna know how you guys solve this problem.

i saw some video on cleaning acrylic panel..they use something like polishing agent..

i dont have time to do that..so i just strip it off..

No concern in tripping the electricity? Strip it off means water can easily bounce into the casing.

yes..but my tank dont have splashing issues..at least not until my cat jump in it..

for diatoms, nerite snail works great too

is it true that nerite snail will die if they fall on their back?.

i bought 2 last few month..and they died with shell at the bottom..i thought they die from fish nibbing them so i just leave the shell like that, but later i read somewhere mention about they can die if the fall on their back because they cannot turn themself back..

may i ask fall as in? from tank to ground ?

i have my nerites climbing out at times from the tank, and they fall to the ground, upon putting back in the tank after awhile they start moving back..
*
no..as if the he climb the glass and fall on his back which is still in the tank..you know like a turtle cannot get back on its feet if it falls on their back..

I stopped the hobby years back due to not having enough time to manage, now feeling like restarting the hobby, all my equipments still available except for the tank, LED, and some minor co2 equipments.

Planning to go with 45cmx30cmx35cm iwagumi style, with just HC and probably some mini fissidens, I've recently heard about these "magic seeds", i wonder if they are any good, and how fast would they grow in a hi-tech tank? Or should I stick to HCs?
*
AFAIK magic seed dont need co2..some even grow with minimal lighting, maybe standard lighting with room temp (26-27'c) will do just fine..and their roots are quite short, so if you put fish that like to nibble around (even algae eater like SAE, SFF etc), it will flown apart from the substrate and be careful with water flow from the filter. it cannot be replanted like monte or hc since it grows from seed. if you let it grow, the leaf will become bigger and longer (not maintain small and cute shape like hc/monte).

but if you want a quick carpet/grass tank theme, these magic seed will works great. but it needs certain condition like no nibbler, u okay with short term aquascape (roughly 3-6month), leaf flowing around the tank, cannot be replanted unless rescaping the whole tank. maybe someone else can add on the list.

Finally a bigger tank, any good recommendation for canister filter? It is a 4ft tank

The 1 I'm currently using is not good enough, jebo 1770 if I remember correctly, rm150, it doesn't really filter well, always see the red colour thingy near the filter inlet, time to get a better 1 and need advise, budget rm400 or slightly higher will be fine
*
saw many recommendation on ejet canister product..with affordable price too..maybe you can go from there to pick suitable size..
