Arctic.
Where it's cold.

I think it's gonna be cooler and energy efficient.. brows.gif
Bro,even a good quality 600-650W PSU is enough for it.
Their low end series are crap. sweat.gif

Well, even if you go for the 8GB 290X,i'm sure it'll run out of processing power before hitting 8GB vRAM IINM. hmm.gif
*
Wongkoewei prove that AMD and nVidia is running an upgrade scam. Hd7970 able to fill more than 2gb. So obviously 290x able to fill more than 4gb.

Wait what? The HD7970 actually have more than 2GB of vRAM? rclxub.gif
*
Wongkoewei test his card able to fill 100% vram. GPU usage 40%. Means if 100% GPU usage of 7970 can fill up to 4gb.

GPU upgrade is scam.

Quite an interesting pricing, beside that lightning priced at 1299, sapphire triX also priced 1249 and 1359 for non OC and OC version respectively
*
I am more bias toward 8gb.

Mantle already use more vram.

I predict direct x 12 also use a lot vram.

There are so many 4GB cards on the market, I would think that's the target for game developers for years to come.

The ceiling for game developer's VRAM requirement when designing a game now would be 2GB, 3GB and 4GB. On rare cases 6GB or 8GB.
*
1. Some lazy developer just port without optimization
2. GPU can be used to compute in directx 12

GPU usage and VRAM usage doesn't really correlate with each other
*
Of course it correlate. GPU usage is GPU processing image and throw into VRAM. GPU doing processing at 40% usage already can fill up 100% VRAM. What that tells you? That tells you that GPU able to fill up VRAM faster than VRAM dumping out to HDMI. rclxms.gif HD7870 is a great card. But hampered by VRAM.

Just like 290X is a great card. It might be hampered by 4GB RAM.

No, what happened was that the game already start using much slower system RAM thus creating a bottleneck, that's why the GPU usage is low.
*
Ok I accept your explanation.

It still point to VRAM deficiency. icon_idea.gif

CF ? Even single card can fill up 4GB. Two R9 290X will need 8GB.

I think now for Crossfire/Sli, we need 8GB per card or 16GB per two card. rclxms.gif

Frankly now only a very few case that 4GB will be bottlenecked.

For CF, the effective VRAM will not be increased as both cards will be provided with identical info, mean if a game that will use 3.5GB in single card, it will use up 7GB in total or 3.5GB per card if u go for CF.
*
That's why we need 8GB per card so that when the processing power is twice, the RAM need to go twice icon_rolleyes.gif

Now very few case 4GB bottle neck. But I really don't care about now. I care about DirectX 12 and Mantle. Those two will use huge amount of VRAM drool.gif

QUOTE(kizwan @ Jan 30 2015, 05:58 PM)
I play BF4 @4K res @ultra & no AA with 290's CFX, the 4GB vram enough for me. It did run at below 3GB vram. The only time it does maxed out the 4GB vram is when there is memory leak issue in BF4 before. The 8GB may useful if there is memory leak but it only delay the inevitable.

For future proof, depends on whether you want to get the 3xx version later when they come out. If you want to settle with 290X for a while & Crossfire them in the future & probably running higher resolution + multi-monitor setup, then the 8GB card is a good choice. Usually once new 3xx gpus are out, current gpus will be out of stock, including the online store. The only way to get 290/290X gpus anymore that time is by go to lowyat. Also 8GB is considered rare unless more manufactures make 8GB cards too before new gpus come out. Take this into consideration before buying 8GB card. In my opinion, two cards or don't. It just my opinion anyway.  smile.gif
*
thanks. buy 2 card now or never. I'll take this into consideration. I'm into 8GB due to nVidia fiasco. Nowaday game developer very lazy.
