If my PSU cannot take the power, can I install another PSU with different wattage and power the GPU?

QUOTE(terradrive @ Jan 16 2015, 09:58 AM) can but very troublesome since you need to power the gpu's psu first with another added switch or pin and then only can turn on the other psu... Ok, that can be done.I want to ask. If let's say a R7 240. It is 50W GPU without the need of 6 pin PSU connector. I have A68N-5000 board with AMD A4-5000. The TDP also around 30W. Total power tdp = 50W + 30W = 80W. Will it work with 150W PSU running at 78% efficiency? I saw 4 PIN connector on the board which I assume is powering the PCI-E 4X lane? I believe its quite dangerous because TDP above does not assume MAX TDP when both CPU and GPU is 100% loaded. So my question is, will it be more safe to run a GPU like AMD R9 280X with 2nd PSU 6 pin power? Please help me choose:- 1) A68N-5000 + R7 240 with 150W PSU 2) A68N-5000 + R9 280X with 150W PSU + 2nd 400W PSU (R9 280X is just example. I will use lower end GPU of course lol) |

QUOTE(terradrive @ Jan 16 2015, 10:55 AM) Quality PSU can put out the rated wattage without regard to which rail. Thanks for explaning the rating. For example my Seasonic X-850 can put out 850 watts just on the 12V rails. 150W PSU with 78% efficiency doesn't mean it can only put out 117W power, but means they can put out 150W to computer's components but pulls 192W from the wall socket. If I have to choose better run one PSU only. Good 450-550W PSU is cheap now. Cheap PSU are rated differently and usually combined wattage of 3.3V, 5V and 12V. The 12 V rails is probably alot less wattage than rated. It's better to get higher wattage PSU because PSU degrades over time. Also the components that are rated as 30W, 50W is the average power consumption, the power consumption is actually goes up and down very fast in miliseconds. The peak power usage may go over the amount and the PSU may not be able to handle it. I faced the same problem when I was using my old Cooler Master Extreme 2 625, it can only supply ATX rated power until 480W, and after 1 year of usage my computer always crashes even when the GPU was idling. Then I switched to Seasonic and very stable now. I put the Cooler Master PSU on AMD II X4 635 + HD5830 and it's running fine. Actually my problem is I'm running HTPC and I have Flex PSU by FSP installed. I think FSP is ok brand. Since it is HTPC, I can't really install SFX PSU with 450W rating. I can probably get a 200W Flex PSU but it is still not enough. Or maybe I can get a 200W Pico PSU running together with my Flex 150W PSU with total 350W. |

QUOTE(wongkoewei @ Jan 23 2015, 06:57 PM) U will buy 290X lightning? I'm considering that too...although not excel in power efficiency, it perform well and the price are good enough. Just curious that my 620W PSU can run this beast, if not then I may need to pay for another PSU or just grab GTXes. You can't update 290x to run DirectX 12. Already confirmed DirectX 12 cannot run on 290x.I think 290X will most probably been updated to run DirectX 12 in future. plus, All of the game currently will backward compatible with DX 9 and i think it will be the case to DX 11. plus there will be a few years before the game designing firm completely ditch DX 11 |

QUOTE(Acid_RuleZz @ Jan 23 2015, 07:42 PM) Actually i lied, according to AMD all GCN card will support DX12. AMd and according to Microsoft most modern GPU will support DX12. Sauce: Don't panic! DirectX12 won't require a new graphics card after all By your logic, people should have not bought Nvidia Keplers because it didn't fully support DX11.1. Where is your source btw? QUOTE(wongkoewei @ Jan 23 2015, 07:43 PM) my amateur thinking is the Direct X thing are software, Hardware are not gonna do much with DirectX support, just the chip maker hence AMD or Nvidia decide which card shell be supported. rubbish Anyway make sure lightning is 1080mhz core. Some sell 1030mhz core lightning. I'm still waiting for chocoboz to contact me. |

QUOTE(Acid_RuleZz @ Jan 23 2015, 07:42 PM) Actually i lied, according to AMD all GCN card will support DX12. We’ve also been informed that DirectX 12 will require a new graphics card in order to take advantage of everything it’s got to offer, though some existing cards will be able to get some benefit from it. “To get the full benefits of DX12, the answer is yes,” Mike Ybarra, Partner Director of Program Management, Xbox Platform told us. “There will be DX 11.1 cards that take advantage of a lot of the driver and software tech that we’re bringing in Windows 10, but if you want the full benefits of DX12, you’re going to need a DX12 cardand according to Microsoft most modern GPU will support DX12. QUOTE(marfccy @ Jan 24 2015, 06:13 AM) frankly, low TDP hardware works best if Higher tdp more noisy. No one want their system to be noisy.1. youre building mITX system where cooling is a huge concern 2. you actually cared of the savings per year from using less power hardware 3. youre on a mobile device but were on a desktop, power consumption shouldnt affect us that much (unless youre extremely sensitive to minor changes in electric bills) IMHO, impossible. im on a GTX780 that was supposedly overkill for 1080p. yet im getting fluctuating frames on games that i should breeze through (no, im not even CPU bottlenecked yet) the only way for you to confirm a solid 60FPS, is to lower graphical details. dont even think of touching AA settings unless you want to see plummeting frames whenever a graphical intensive scene appears and dont be too fussed on 290X's power requirements. i OCed my GTX780 quite high even with a 650W and my PSU isnt even struggling to juice it up. you rarely see GPU throttled by lack of power unless you deliberately feed it lack of power |
