Tua Ya Pek helps set up a roadside altar and fans the flames of an offering bonfire.

QUOTE(nachtsider @ Aug 22 2016, 11:17 AM) Haha, glad you liked it. I find things like these fascinating. When I was younger, a neighbour lent me a collection of mystic/supernatural stories of Malays and they were highly interesting. You can get a picture of the mentality and environment of the people back then. I.e. like the previous poster said, most of them live in small villages in jungle, very isolated etc. But I'm a bit curious though, cos I think this is the first time I heard of countering black magic with a different faith. Cos typically, they will look for someone from the same faith, e.g. imam if the victim is Malay etc. |

QUOTE(jonoave @ Aug 22 2016, 05:39 PM) Haha, glad you liked it. I find things like these fascinating. It is only natural that someone of culture/faith X will seek religious specialists of culture/faith X despite being faced with black magic originating from culture/faith Y. This decision is always made out of cultural/religious familiarity and personal convenience. If the power of your religious specialists is sufficiently strong, it really does not matter that the black magic you are facing originates from a different faith/culture.When I was younger, a neighbour lent me a collection of mystic/supernatural stories of Malays and they were highly interesting. I.e. like the previous poster said, most of them live in small villages in jungle, very isolated etc. But I'm a bit curious though, cos I think this is the first time I heard of countering black magic with a different faith. Cos typically, they will look for someone from the same faith, e.g. imam if the victim is Malay etc. I'll give you a real-life example. Pregnant couple (we'll call them Steve and Jenny) came to my teacher's place to consult Tua Ya Pek. I was there to help clerk their case. Jenny had been dreaming of a sinister old Malay-speaking Nyonya-ish woman who told her that she would take her baby and eat it alive (obviously a pontianak). Steve told her not to think too much of this, until Jenny started bleeding from the birth canal. Doctors did scans and all that and said that things were fine, but they were scared stiff, the baby being very precious due to them having tried for a long time, and begged Tua Ya Pek to help. Tua Ya Pek gave them a talisman that Jenny had to wear around her pregnant belly, and told them that the next time the pontianak came by, "She's gonna wish she never died." Few nights later, Jenny dreamt of the pontianak trying to physically attack her, but the vampiress burst into flames the moment she tried to lay a hand on Jenny. Jenny said she could hear the pontianak screaming in pain even after she woke up in a cold sweat. Steve didn't hear any screaming, but he heard a loud flapping noise outside the bedroom window like some sort of large bird was trying to get in. All they could do was hold each other tight until the noises eventually stopped. No more trouble at all after that. Baby Rachel was born smoothly, is now a talented teenager and has totally no clue about what threatened her in the past. |

Is Sintua considered ancestral worship or a different kind of Taoist interpretation of religion?

QUOTE(pikachu01 @ Aug 22 2016, 07:24 PM) Sintua should not be regarded as part of Taoism. The former is a religion that is steeped in folklore, myths and legends, and focuses on revering deified heroes of days gone by - on keeping their memory alive, and on summoning them from beyond the physical world to assist the needy. (You could therefore regard ancestral worship as one of its fundamental aspects.) The latter is an ascetic religion that eschews material desires/pursuits and focuses on harmonising with nature and the universe. You will find NOTHING related to most Sintua rituals and practices in the Dao De Jing or any other Taoist scriptures/treatises. Taoism frowns upon numerous sintua practices - trance mediumship in particular. |

QUOTE(nachtsider @ Aug 22 2016, 01:14 PM) » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « I'm not sure if this is the right question to ask, cos it relates it more to Malay supernatural. I observed that from reading the lore on Malay black magic etc, a lot of the evil ghosts like to prey on pregnant woman and/or babies (e.g. even in your case, pontianak), or a woman giving birth. Is this common in Chinese superstition as well? Can you think of a possible reason why there is an obsession of evil spirits with pregnant women or babies? |

QUOTE(jonoave @ Aug 23 2016, 12:03 AM) Thanks for sharing the story, it's fascinating! With pontianaks, who were mostly young mothers who died in childbirth, the motive is jealousy and hatred. Pregnant women who are making good progress with their pregnancies and are receiving lots of love/support during their pregnancies, along with their unborn babies, represent everything that the pontianaks were never able to have. If the babies are female, the pointianaks, after killing them, may groom their souls to become pontianaks, too, out of spite and a twisted sense of motherhood.I'm not sure if this is the right question to ask, cos it relates it more to Malay supernatural. With other supernatural beings, the reason is because pregnant women are physically and spiritually vulnerable - their spiritual and physical vitality is spread thinner, over two individuals (mother and baby). Also, you get two prey items for the price of one. A baby's life force is pure and unsullied, making it a tastier feast. |

QUOTE(MooTikPin @ Aug 23 2016, 10:22 PM) The Ampang Nine Emperor Gods Temple will be your best bet, but the relevant festivities have yet to begin. They commence on 30 September, the eve of the first day of the ninth lunar month. |
