Hi everyone, how are you? I have been working in Singapore for quite some while, and am thinking if I should apply for a PR. I have some foreign friends who have been here for some time too but a big majority of them don't plan on applying for one since the "paycut" for CPF is pretty horrendous.
I am hesitating if i should do the application, and would appreciate it if you could answer some of my questions.
1) say i apply for PR, got it, and don't renew it after. Will i be able to still work in singapore (not having done the renewal),  AND will i be able to take out my CPF since I am no longer a PR?
2) i want to bring my parents to live in singapore.  A search online indicates that there is this pass called long term visit pass. Can i apply for one if i am not a PR (some told me there are special provisions for malaysians?)?
3) or alternatively i can apply for the social visit pass? does it work like a normal tourist pass which means my parents can stay in singapore 60 out of 90 days?

Thank you for your help in advance. I have tried to search for the answers but the ICA website does not give clear answers. Actually, my decision to apply for a PR hinges on mainly bringing my parents over to SG, and if they can actually stay with me for long term without me being a PR, i might not consider applying for one.

Answers are provided as of what I know (I'm just 5 months here in SG tongue.gif so no way I'm a PR yet~)

1) PR no need renew right? What you need to renew is REP. If you never renew REP, you still can stay in SG. But after you go out to MY you cannot come back in biggrin.gif

2) S Pass/EP also can apply LTVP with conditions to fulfill. See the link above.

3) No idea

Regarding CPF...

If you're West Malaysian (Peninsular), you can only withdraw all your fund in CPF AFTER 55 year old and AFTER you renounce your Singapore PR status.

If you're East Malaysian (Sabah/Sarawak), you can withdraw all your fund in CPF BEFORE 55 year old AFTER you renounce your SPR status.

If you want to keep the SPR status, there's a limit in amount of money you can withdraw even after you hit 55 year old.

Actually the official wording is residence, i.e. "If you are a Malaysian citizen and have left Singapore permanently to reside in West Malaysia." If you are West Malaysian and planning to leave SG to go Australia, theoretically (according to the website, at least) you can withdraw all CPF before 55.

"Males only" ... followed by the drool emoticon ... ?!?

hmm.gif is it? Anyway... Most probably back M'sia one right? If that's the case... It's still good for me since I'm from the jungle state biggrin.gif

hmm.gif I just noticed after you mention. Maybe I should avoid them. Don't know later got what party in that house at night tongue.gif

I am using Citibank and can transfer between my SG and MSIA account instantly.

As for rate, CIMB is always better compare to Citi
*
How about charges?

I just done my transaction at CIMB. Show on screen 2.667 but system shows 2.664X. Doesn't matter la just 3/10 cent difference.

Charge is really just $5. After considering that $5, the rate for changing 2000 is just 2.57XX which is good enough. Best rate for cash vs this service at 2000SGD just RM21 difference. Better safe than sorry haha. 2000 should be enough for CNY eh biggrin.gif biggrin.gif First CNY after start working what should I bring home?

anyone here can advise on the job's website?

Keep looking only lo... Nothing else you can do. SG government pressing employees to hire Singaporeans. What can you do? Haha

Why are you applying PR in the first place ? because everyone beside you is applying ? smile.gif
I thought CIMB is free ? What is this $5 fee for ?
*
I do it at their currency exchange counter. I don't have both cimb SG/my account. I see their rate is quite good mah... And for 2000 extra charge just $5. Overall exchange rate should be slightly higher than remittance service outside after factoring in the higher exchange rate and the normally $10 extra charge. That's for 2000sgd la. Higher amount then other remittance service will be more worth.

But I'm not sure yet la. Need wait receive the money in my Maybank M'sia only know how much I actually get there. Counter lady told me is the exact amount in MYR la but who knows?

I hope you get your desired room! I suppose Tiong Bahru, Redhill and Clement are considered as prime areas hence the higher rent.
*
Yeah... Try at these areas for few more days. If really cannot then stay back East side lo doh.gif

Have you considered Bendemeer area such as Towner, St George's & Boon Keng?

I stayed in St George's area $700 per month. Ulu place like Punggol is $650 near MRT/LRT station. Might as well top up $50 to stay near Central area (aircond + wifi). Hawker centre and Value $/Good Price are just 5 minutes walk.
*
hmm.gif Seriously never consider eh. Coz based on the past 5 months of work, I frequently need to go along green line (EW line). Also the first place I stay now is also near green line. Quite like green line as it gives access to so many places biggrin.gif Just that morning going towards town area from east side the MRT really.... Speechless biggrin.gif

Thank you, good luck for ur interview too!

Guys, which prepaid telco is better? Mostly for surfing and calling, for about 1 week usage
*
biggrin.gif All prepaid plan actually same one. Call rate also same. So the cost for Singtel/Starhub/M1 all same.

But coverage wise, go for Singtel. Ask anyone in SG and they'll easily tell you Singtel best coverage haha...

$7 for 1GB for 7 days (8 days including the day you buy it tongue.gif )

Hi guys, I was given an offer from a e&e company with the position of assistant engineer, and the starting pay is only 2,200sgd.

Should I take the offer? Personally I think that the salary is a bit low, and do note that I'm a degree holder in mechanical engineering instead of e&e.
*
biggrin.gif No experience memang kena chop one. But you kena chop more than me.

If you look further you should be able to find around 2.5~2.8 one.

Anyway... You can easily survive with 2.2k in SG with modest lifestyle (for a fresh grad, not modest for a 20 years experienced guy la). 400 (share) ~ 650 (single) for room rental, 100 for transport, 60 for phone, 500 for food, 100 for grocery. Still got around 800 savings.

800 x 2.65 = RM2120. That's almost your pay in MY d biggrin.gif

Btw... Got allowance or not? Mobile allowance, transport allowance that kind of thing. Also make sure you have proper medical coverage and annual leave.

Don't later one year only 7 days, take some leaves here and there then finish d biggrin.gif

Technically cannot. But there's certain condition to be met if you want to drive your Msian car. Can check this article here.

http://geraldgiam.sg/2013/08/malaysian-reg...ring-singapore/

It's only on case-to-case basis and you still need to pay the OMV of your Msian car in S'pore car equivalent value. On top of that you will need to pay the daily $35 VEP fee. Not worth to venture down this road. Just buy a resale SG car

"Work and reside in WM"

Means all of us also disqualified d la biggrin.gif

its pretty uncomfortable to live with a salary below s$2k. You might have to share a rented room, always budget on your meal, almost no extra for entertainment.
I always tell my work folks, they are the lucky ones, drawing s$2.5 as freshie with only diploma. Add a few OTs and easily draw > s$3k month. Downside is working shift, 15 days work 15 days off.
*
OMG... Why diploma at your company better remuneration package than me with degree.

15days work 15days off means what? Work continuous without rest for 15 days then 15 days continuous no need work?

I definitely die for that kind of job. Every month can go two weeks holiday cool2.gif cool2.gif

Hi guys,

I just want to ask is it possible to land a job in Singapore while staying at Malaysia (Sarawak)? Do employers even care to call or contact you if they find out you are currently staying oversea? Or they will conduct the interview through phone or online? Thanks.
*
I'm from Sarawak and yes it's possible. But if they contact you, looking at your phone number (MY phone number) and address, they'd probably already know that you're probably still residing in M'sia. It depends on the company whether they need you to personally go down to SG for interview. Or maybe some conduct first round through skype. If they ok then ask you to come personally for a second round or so.

Mine is conducted through skype only. The company needs ppl so they're ok with hiring just through Skype interview.

However... The best is that you can be personally here and attend the physical interview. One who does well in face-to-face interview for sure has higher chance compared to one who got interviewed just through tele conference.

Good luck in your job hunting biggrin.gif biggrin.gif
