QUOTE(stickynote @ Jun 24 2015, 10:14 PM)
Hi to all sifus,

Newbie here. Got myself a cheap foldie with many gears last few months. Regret that I didn't do much research or reading prior to this.

Would like to do an upgrade with budget of 1.2-1.3k. Am a lady rider bout 165cm/less than 50kgs. I am more to a recreational (average about 30-40kms per ride on weekends) and perhaps slightly longer distance one or twice a month (approximately 60ish depending on stamina that day). Would prefer foldies with more than 7 speed. It was quite a torture using my existing cheap china brand foldie with growing 'ngek' sound and its extremely heavy body (about 14.5kg).

After reading through V3 and V4 for the past few days I have actually shortlisted the following few within my budget but am still wondering if which one is more suited for my requirement (test drove and I am leaning more towards the 3 Dahons equally- problem with girls lah haha):-

1. Dahon Boardwalk D8
2. Dahon Vitesse D8
3. Dahon Vybe C7A
4. Trinx KA2016D

Would like to ask the opinion of all the sifus here, which will be better for my requirement? As I did not ride it for long (just borrowed from friend to test drive awhile only..paiseh to ask permission to cycle far far), it feels almost the same for me -.-" Are the Dahons I have shortlisted be modded for higher speed in the future (shd there be a need lah)?

Trinx...I am attracted to its more affordable prices but comes with quite good specs (more gears easier for me to do climbing as I am quite weak in climbing) but then again I see sifu etigge said before, best to choose Dahon for branding, warranty and reliability. Have considered touring bikes/road bikes before lah but then not enough space as bf's road bike is usually at the back seat while my current foldie in the boot and also I am actually not used to the bicycle being so 'high' (dunno is it the right term to call it). Don't feel secure lah as before this my old bikes are those 'city/aunty' bikes with big basket in front.

Many thanks in advance for the replies!

Even though you are not riding often, you do ride a fair distance per trip. If you prefer foldies, then go right ahead. But, if you have space to store bikes and the issue is only transporting by car, just use a bkie rack and buy a full size road bike. More comfortable for longer rides and it just looks big, actual geometry not that much difference to foldies. I know women find foldies less intimidating....

Have fun riding regardless!

Etigge & all sifus,

Was thinking of buying a foldie, which brand shld go for and why, can anyone share some info to a newbie here.  icon_question.gif

1) Dahon
2) Tern X10
3) Brompton
4) Birdy
*
If you have a high budget, then just get whatever you like best. We sometimes buy things not just from a functional perspective, but for the design, quality or exclusiveness at the price we think is value for money. That means different things to different people, right?

Dahons are the Toyotas of folding bikes. They do everything well. Tern would be similar to Dahon. Brompton, good design, quality built, nice riding, limited gearing. Birdy, lighter aluminium, with suspension so ride is nice, but terrible looking fold, look very different. If you can stretch to a Birdy, then you have many choices. Just decide on what sort of riding you'd be doing. If all you are doing is riding around the park, then any bike with any gearing will do the job. If you want to climb hills, then the Brompton may be harder work. But if you are climbing all the time, it will be hard work regardless of bikes. Folding bikes are difficult to pedal off the seat. If you want to do a bit of everything, I would stick with a Dahon. If you want to be different and can afford to spend, then a Birdy or Brompton.

Many riders have the perception that disc brake is better. Both systems have their pros and cons. Look at it this way, the V-brakes have a friction surface all around the rims, both side. That's almost 406 cm x2  and that's 800 cm of braking surface. As oppose to disc brakes it is only 46 cm X 2 and that's only 92 cm braking surface on a thin disc. The disc brake works better, stops faster BUT can you wrist pull the levers hard enough? Have you seen brake disc running on cable on cars or motorcycles? Off course not. It needs a lot of force and the only solution is hydraulics! That's why any hydraulic disc brakes works better than the V-brakes. But you can't fit the hydraulic system into folding bike because the hydraulic hose cannot be folded to tight. So, they went for the first generation disc brakes, a cable actuated one which requires you to pull hard on braking.

If you don't fold your FIT often or never, you can actually change to hydraulic brakes, it's so cheap nowadays. Jimmy can put one in for about 200 bucks. Or maybe, fold very carefully, taking care of the hose. It can be bend but not very acutely. You know, you are already praising the V-brakes on the Dahon and that statement actually confirms how bad mechanical disc brakes are. The V-brakes you have , there are actually many more better quality V-brakes and some even cost more than the hydraulic disc brakes.

I heard rim brakes can overheat on very long downhills, and this is where discs are better. No experience myself, just what I've read.

Hi all,

Just a noob question. Why dahon route brake lever are opposite side? I mean right lever are supposed to brake front brakes, right? Mine is on the left....
*
I found this to be true for continental bikes or those made for that market. The Brompton and Bike Friday are certainly that way.

Why? Must be to do with Left or Right hand drive! biggrin.gif

We must pay a lot of taxes in Oz. The local council has recently installed these bike repair stations for the cyclists to use. Very good idea, but when will it get vandalised? blush.gif

my trinx ka2024 macam using 110mm BCD front crank.

Now it max out 50T at the largest crank.

Any choices of 110mm front crank? i see litepro most is 130mm
*
Probably something like this? 53T

Bought one recently from Aliexpress. OK, you pay for what you get.

how much for that IGH?

My bike came with that set up. You can check ebay. It will be a few hundred RM, but if you have no options to add gears, then this may be the answer. Only you can judge if your bike is nice enough to spend $$ on. Another alternative is to look out for second hand units?

After i do a research, i think my bike cannot install that IGH, it required 135mm and my bike is 130 mm. Check with some sifu, they said i can install the 135mm to 130 mm, but there is no guarantee the wheel will be straight again, because cannot guarantee "open" 2.5mm at one side, just tell me better don't try to buy a expensive part to damage the bike.

Nice bike or not is not an issue, as sifu here said the part will follow u when u change your bike.

Thanks for your reply.
*
As sifu said earlier, spreading the frame is not a problem if it is a steel frame bike. Alloy frame would be hard to do.

5mm is nothing and will not cause any issues with the bike's geometry.

Get uni posting to Sabah. So thinking of bringing my bike together. @.@
just fold or shud dismantle it? rclxub.gif

Depends on how small you want to pack. Take off the wheels and the whole package is smaller. You can use a cardboard box. I use a padded soft bag for my B and a Samsonite suitcase for the BF. Not that difficult and it should be within your allowance of 25kg. Cardboard box will be lighter.

they didnt mention any dimensions but weight only.  means i can just put the folded bike in the bag for transfer?
*
If you tell AirAsia what it is, you'll have to check it in as sporting equipment, and you'll have to pay additional fees. If you partly dismantle the bike, you call it bike parts! LOL

Just add some padding where it could scratch, the frame and fork. Also protect the rear dérailleur.

Yes, and also the train ride back to KL.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Before I parted with my foldie gang, I have actually planned a ride from Klang to Penang and at that point there were 21 participants.  In fact most of the recce has been done. The idea was a slow relaxing ride. Doing maximum 75 to 90 kilometers a day and riding only in the mornings. After noon, we will have already checked into a hotel and explore the places. Seems KK (who was initially one of the riders who has agreed to join) followed up and went through the plan. Syabas! to him. At least our recce did not go to waste. KK was in most of the trips. The original plan was,

1st day, Klang to Sekinchan  - mainly isolated kampong roads and some stretches fireroad by the seaside (can be seen on the pictures) Ths kind of road stretches from Tg.Karang till Sekinchan and straight on till Pasir Panjang.

2n day , Sekinchan to T.Intan -  Sekinchan >> Sg.Besar, using an old main road which is quite deserted nowadays. Sg.Besar to Bagan Datoh , might use the main road, once in a while.

3rd day, T.Intan to Sitiawan -First part s main road across the bridge over Perak River till a point, detoured into kampong roads all the way till the Sitiawan temple. Then from, travel into village road through Kg.Cina and ends in
a home stay near the main traffic light junction.

4th day, Sitiawan to Trong  - Main road till detour into Teluk Senangin and from there, there's an small offroad thru oil palm plantation to Segari turtle hatchery. From there to the main road and then main road to Pantai Remis and
then straight to Trong. In Trong there's a nice homestay / motel which s right at the estuary (Kuala) of the river with ikan bakar.

5th day, Trong to Nibong Tebal - Trong > Kuala Sepetang (secondary roads) > boat ride from Sepetang to Kuala Gula > Kuala Kurau (on the man road but very little traffic) >  Tg.Piandang (coastal road passing pantai Ban Pecah
and finally to Nibong Tebal (all the way coastal sandy trail through Sungai Burong and Bagan Tiang and after Bagan Tiang, the border road between Penang and Perak)

I considered Nibong Tebal Penang already and a bus will pick us up there to cross the 2nd bridge (cyclist not allowed although there's a motorcycle lane).  Seems KK has cut some time off their schedule as they are riding in a pair only (easy to manage as my group then was about 20 to 24 riders rclxub.gif ) They are able to ride straight to Butterworth as they are only a pair and this is not advisible if you are in a big group as the road from there to Butterworth is narrow and filled with heavy vehicles.

Maybe someone here wants to organize such a ride thumbup.gif For those interested in part of the recce rides, can check Ah Pek Biker's blog here. It's no easy task organizing such rides though.

I wonder how easy it is to join in one of these rides? Wouldn't mind dragging a bike with me back here!

Tyre lever and pump?

I would slip in a piece of cardboard on either side of the bag too just for some added protection.

If you don't want to deal with punctures, get a good set of tyres. Definitely not those built for "speed" or light weight.

hehe, yeah, tomorrow I'll try to go earlier. safety first and yes, ride defensively. give way to people and always alert. assume people don't see you, and slow down each time at a place where a car / motorcycle will come out, as they always assume you are slow and come out unexpectedlty. these are what I observe today.
