Finally bought my bike today. Test immediately upon reaching home. As expected, after 10 years of no riding a bike, thigh burning and shaking all over lol. My housing area is really hilly. Good for stamina training, I think, haha. Thanks everyone for answering all my questions earlier, etigge, h2d, azam, anykti, frankie, kucingfight and everyone.

Initially thought to buy one small wheel 14 or 16 inch one that can be brought into lrt and train, but at last still buy 20 inch wheel one as I found out many hastle to bring into train, such as cannot in peak hours (so bringing bike to go to office is not possible!), must be bagged, etc. So I think just gonna chain it at lrt stations, and if I gain stamina already, maybe bike all the way to office...haha kalau mampu. But today no lock yet, so can't use to lrt yet, must find good lock coz I scared will be missing :-\ recommendation for lock?

See if I caught the bugbite riding for exercise and joining ride, so maybe in future I invest more for this hobby. For now, I'll worn out this economy bike first.

do share ur pix also sis

bydaway
u cant bring ur bike at peak hour even with bags?i wont recomended if u  want to lock ur bike at train station.its easy to open the lock on folding bike coz to many joint parts eith few tools.either u get a chain with padlock and tie up nearly all parts than its ok!
*
sad.gif alamak, even if I thread the lock through the small triangle on the rear part (refer picture)?

Attached Image

I am also thinking a long metal chain and padlocks to secure all the parts. must try first, but I do worry the bike goes missing sad.gif

no, even with bags cannot at peak hours, at least that's the case with Kelana Jaya line, which I'm using mostly. I do understand why though coz it's really pack, even today I board from the 2nd station from the end, already squashed like sardine. RapidKL KJ line does not make compulsory for bag but peak hours strictly cannot sad.gif

KTM Commuter which I need to change into need to be put in bag, but still also cannot in peak hours. although for Komuter, maybe can sneak in,as most of the quiet stations doesn't have guards.

My dad said, the only solution is to cycle to office, which I plan to do too, but need to practise, stamina wise and route wise. sweat.gif

What? Even put bike in bag still cannot enter the train during peak hours? Dem. My workplace from the train station is quite far i just thought about buying a new folding bike so I don't have to walk so far anymore. Taxi very expensive. cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif
*
cannot cry.gif and their peak hours is 6am-9am, 4pm-8pm on weekdays! which totally beat the purpose of bike+train commuting to work right? I wish for the days Malaysia have train for bikes like in Amsterdam, haha even the big bike can enter train and I read that the bikes occupied more than people in the trains.

anyway, for me, what I can try is to cycle from my home to the nearest KTM Sentul about 8km away. As Sentul station is not crowded at all in the morning, an isolated station, also I never see the guard there, so maybe can sneak in the bike at peak hour he he he. then it's only 1 station to my office. My usual trip without bike is via KJ line, then change to Komuter in KLSentral, but maybe I can try this with the bike

here's a link to a bloggers experience who try travel via the usual intercity komuter: http://ahpekbiker.blogspot.com/2014/07/bri...-malaysian.html

i think the triangle will do, but the front part can be open with tools.the bike is aluminium, so the price for used/recycle part for aluminium is quite high

i think better u try borrow any bag from your friends or forumer here to test out.if carry in bag can be done even within peak hour, so what u need is to buy the bag only!
*
Yeah there's nothing can hold to the front part. Ok, will try that, I think when in bag not many people would know what's inside. I'll buy the bag and try and see what happens.

I take LRT from Taman Bahagia, last time always see a guy carrying a foldie and timing around 0830 to 0930. He didn't used any bag.
*
Last time is when eh? Because lately lrt become more crowded, maybe that's why. I think if not seen by authority can, but if from my station, it is very crowded and depends on that to be able to sneak in without bag.

Yeah.. When I got my foldie, I'll try to put it in a bag and try to sneak in. It's not fair. Foldies are not so big why do they have to make that kind of rules. Are they against a greener country?  mad.gif  mad.gif  mad.gif

I will gety bag next Monday and will try this and let u know.

I don't know much about bike performance, but since you mention before it's for gf, if aesthetic wise I vote for you the xds haha. When I went to the bike shop, I see that one many times, I like the design. But I didn't choose because I was looking for cheaper ones and only will save for better one if I need in future.

Last thursday I got time to go back early due to office open house, so I just try to cycle to Komuter Sentul, it was at peak hours. So I ask if can bring in my bike, no bag. The komuter guy said can (but I didnt as I was just planning to ask), I show him my bike, and ask if I need to put in bag. He said no need, just carry by hand but must fold it (that time I didn't fold it). I ask what about peak hours? He said if not many people can, but if many people cannot. So I guess it depends on the crowd.

So komuter down, lrt to go. I'll see when I have time for experiment.

Btw, on the ride. It's about 7km one way. It was around 6pm from gombak, to Sentul was not bad traffic as people were coming back from opposite direction, but a bit scary at traffic lights. I ride defensively for safety. But what's the correct way, to ride on the left or the right side of the road? I stay on the left but when comes to junction I need to turn right with traffic light, I find it a bit daredevilish to cross, so I stop and wait until no car to cross. Also what's proper way waiting at traffic light, together with motorcycles in front? I do that and try to pedal fast when green light coz scared car will honk me for slow, haha. Coming back home, I was riding with the office people traffic, so take precationed, a bit dangerous when next to big lorry. I was not wearing helmet at this time.

And I now know what people mean when they say the bike not fast enough haha, I felt that in some parts of the ride. In total it was about 14km, I was fine going to komuter sentul but coming back nearing gombak, my legs wanna give up already haha. I relied on my heels to press on the paddles on final parts of the journey. But arrived safely.

Oh yeah my butt sore too, I think need to change seat? Or use the proper cycling pants if riding long?

Got my helmet already, so maybe if I have the courage next week will do that for real to office.

for butt pain,
try to find cycling paded underware and not pants.so u can wear any pants outside without a problem.

2nd option maybe can change saddle.the saddle a bit more subjective depends on personal choice.im suing brooks sadle and without any cycling pants or underwear.

and always a bright outfit when cycle.nvm about to slow, as long u didnt block the traffic
*
I'll try look for saddle first, thanks! :-)

Looks good for guys :-)

Btw, only upon 3rd use, the folding mechanism of my raleigh wrangler falls apart. I had some difficulties earlier when clasping, I need to put it at certain angle then only it can clasp, I think some misalignment of the screw. Right after the 3rd ride, while folding it to keep in house, then, clang! all the stuff fall down. Lucky didn't happen while riding! Also Luckily no parts broke and I know how to put them together again. Now no more problem clasping but I'll see how long it holds, ride this morning seems ok.

yes, this one is cable only, u can use padlock with it.

this one is really thick and expensive....  biggrin.gif
*
yeah expensive, i search for kryptonite as read people recommend it. but if use flimsy padlock still no use right he he. I read somewhere that we should invest in locks that is 25% the price of the bike...ha ha ha

anyway, still have doubt leaving the bike in lrt station as Azam highlighted earlier on how easy to open up folding bike with simple tools and I agree too. And still also haven't bring the folding bike in lrt to go to work as it's seems mafan. so end up I still can't use the bike as my original intention - to commute train+bike to office, lol. my dad is laughing at me and tell me why I bother about it as he still can send me to lrt...arghhh! vmad.gif

right now it has become just an exercise tool, which is also fine though.

when on solo touring, i didnt bring any lock.just fold the bike and i pray at the mosque.when i had a stomach ache or i need to find a toilet, petronas is always been my choice for a bigger toilet room.

anyway, have u bought the bag and try to slip ur bike into lrt?
on the other hand,
have u ask either lrt provide a room to store the bike?maybe some fees applied, but as long the bike secure than its ok..
*
No, I haven't try, because it's heavyyy, so it's a bit mafan especially when changing at klsentral :-P I will try one day on days I'm not working so it will totally be a safe experiment, but no time yet.

Nope lrt putra don't have room for bikes, I doubt any other services (komuter / ampang line) have those too, as I said before Malaysia still long way to go to be bike commute friendly.

o.d, you female? Do you intend to cycle in skirt and high heels to work?
Or you take a change of clothes and shoes along when you cycle?

QUOTE(H2D @ Aug 20 2015, 09:25 AM)
Eh who said female have to wear skirt and high heels ?
*
hehe yeah H2D is right, although I'm female I don't wear high heels to work, just comfy loafers tongue.gif Heels are bad for your health ha ha ha! I do wear skirt sometimes but mostly pants, so obviously if I will cycle I will wear pants. Luckily my office can wear casual, not so corporate is acceptable. but I think if you need it, you can keep formal shoes in office to change into.

Anyway, for my plan to a further Komuter station, but easier (no need change at KLSentral) I plan to take change of clothes since it's more or less will sweat me up. My office has shower.

But when I successfully try the other option which is to LRT, which is nearer my house, I plan to just go in office wear.

Both of these I haven't tried but definitely I will do the Komuter option soon in September, the other option not so sure yet.

Nevertheless, I think if it's near it's okay to cycle in office wear:
http://images.huffingtonpost.com/2013-11-20-Iladora.jpg

Last time in school we cycled in school uniforms - baju kurung, pinafore, no problem, why problem with office attire biggrin.gif

Initially, many people will concern on how people look at us, but once you do it, you'll not feel anything. as for me as long as comfortable, just go with any choice you like.

Either that, or pants and high heels.

For men, do they wear long sleeve shirt and leather shoes when cycling to work?
Or have a change of clothes and shoes in the bag?

After you reached your destination, you will be sweaty wet.
Do you take bath in the office then start work?

that's what I plan to do. My office has shower.
