Hello, welcome to the official thread for Container House Malaysia Movement.
This thread was pinned by Lowyat moderator as their support for the novelty of this idea.

Hi, my name is Muhamad Azree and I am currently running a project with codename: The Container House

Provided below is the main resources where you can view photos, videos and reading material of the progress

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The project is already reached the phase where further modification is being completed at 84%
it is now progressing on:

1. Extending the second storey of the house and placing a proper roofing for passive insulation and shading
2. Completing the kitchen area (doing a table top with proper sink, storage and cooking area)
3. Completing a concrete structure for the toilet that is detached from the main container structure (should one day I am moving to a different land)

I would like to send my appreciation to all lowyat members who's giving ultimate supports and responds throughout this journey
For being among the first pioneer in such project in Malaysia is indeed a butthurt to me and reading a negative respond / comment / hate & condemn without justification worseing the situation. But I will keep the positive vibes to endure such resistance.

Thanks to those who wish to come and even those who has visited the project location so far. Your effort to come with a very little attention given from me (i was being busy) is appreciated

I am looking forward for a gathering of lowyat members once I am satisfied with the house / when it is visitable
The house is located at Kampung Sijangkang, Teluk Panglima Garang.

If you still wondering and asking such controversial questions, I will instead replying that: This is my way, my home and my effort

Keep the discussion running with positivity. Morale supports is valuable for the moment for a momentous progress.

You can PM me for personal question or acquire my contact number there should you insisted to visit any sooner

If any of you who whises to give material supports, I will be pleased to accept only items, not wang ringgit. You can consider donating fruitable plant, seeds, used items, drawing, ideas or anything that won't cost you any. I prefer to watch the things to grow around my compound and having great memory and story behind it.

The official 1st visitor to the house from Lowyat is proxymate and thank you for coming and supporting. I am pleased with your generosity

hugs and loves
Muhamad Azree

As from all previous thread made:

Here's the latest progress:

1. Klik sked ada virus? Lol
2. Rumahkontena.com
3. My Blog

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Now I have few problems:
1. Still no toilet to berak RM2.5K cost (detached toilet outside of the container using concrete)
2. Electricity and Water havent yet connected RM1.5K + RM1K
3. Money money money.... Another RM 5K needed. So 50 people, 50 weekend RM100 /person

Any of you willing to donate aka book for a staycation??? I need backers

As balasan of course I will invite you to my humble container house for a night and makan2 starting January
But I can host 2 people at 1 time, else berebut to berak the tahi and use toilet lol

I will surely create a calendar with all donors waiting list and suggested date for the stay.
We can make friend, talk kok about container, watch movie, love love etc with me

You can donate to my paypal azreeceli@yahoo.com

Yea, will have aircond

If any, RM100/person will do. PM me lah ya, haha
This is not serious, but if the odd on my favor, who knows right?

From what i see from Google, those nice ones need at least 2 containers.
No way one is enough.

Really impressed by all your efforts. Sure there will be challenges but you guys are the pioneer in this relatively new thing in Malaysia.

ey, how do you handle ventilation ?
serious question here ...

do you use inline/axial fans coupled with carbon filters or just normal exhaust fans ??
*
i like this question

many asked what about heat problem

simple je, if you expose the metal to sun directly, the heats expanding inside the container

but if you insulate from outside

you dont even let the heat reach the container, so no interior insulation needed, do it externally

in which i will use roof 8 feet high, used pallet outside

i have an exhaust fan and aircond, exhaust to be ran 24/7 using solar hopefully if ada money extra

2400 sqft in area

u wanna join me in? come la, put your container, pay me land rent like 300/month, lol

but dont waste your money that way, 300 X 5 X 12 = 18K
better buy a land and do your own, up to 50K only, 5 years personal loan will do

*
is the land belongs to u.. else ur container house is illegal

how do you fend of the heat accumulation inside the container
*
i will not allow the heat accumulating inside the container, hence my solution is by external insulation, so heat wont reach my metal sides with 100% exposure

it's called laminated flooring

the material is either MDF or recycled rubber. if you want to save cost, use 12mm waterproof plywoods instead

and as for the kalebet u keep saying, it's actually culvert

if you need water supply, just use a 90-deg TEE and connect it from any existing pipeline that belongs to you (or your neighbor)

you'd also need some form of ventilation, so a 2-fan system will be the easiest. you'd need another ventilation fan inside the toilet for obvious reasons

you will need noise insulation for the upper deck. when it rains, it will be quite deafening inside

the easiest way to insulate is to use 2" rock wool and fix it to the underside of the upperdeck with 2" chicken wire mesh (easily available). weld some 3" steel rod so u can tie the chicken wire mesh. it will look ugly, so cover it up with 9mm plywoods.

good luck. thumbup.gif

This is great!! I support your ideas.

TS, have u seen the design of The Cabin in Langkawi? I think it is based on the same concept and it has toilets!!!

And make it modular in a way it can be upgraded maybe by joining 2 or more containers for expansion.

Also, google bronte attic. It has a modular bathroom.

but i feels slightly secured when my nearest neighbour is so friendly and helpful

i am surrounded from 3 sides with around 10 houses, 1 side only bushes

so security wise, i will install cctv an siren maybe and near sensor like car reverse method

yup. apparently, they have too much waster tyres and nowhere to dump them

burning them to get the metals inside is not allowed by DOE

so there's this research to shred it to chips

they also mix it to the tarmac to make the roads less noisy and more grippy. they say lah. i read only

as for the many concern arised fr others here, rest assured as long as the insulation is well installed, shouldnt hv any trouble about the heat.

Geran kongsi? Cash payment?
For rm15k for the container, still acceptable..
If u have budget u can construct small house.
It's doable but really2 need to control budget. Maybe minimum rm30k for small house..

its time to not to buy anywhere closer to city for convenience

yes its slightly harder for short period of time, but a bucket full of ease in the future

terrace house in shah alam is 500K minimum, 1400 sqft bayar sampai pencen

why must we buy a terrace with less privacy, growing area for kid, selfish neighbour, bangla security etc

TS, why not just hire a contractor and build a house? Sure cheaper and not inflated price like those built by developer
*
heres my plan

to build a house will cost minimum 100K for nowadays
it is almost impossible i can afford that amount of money and commitment to pay

so i use this method
short term plan for long term ease

means, buy land 1st, 35K, but loan 50K
so use extra 15k for container to live for 5 years until loan 5 years finished

after 5 years, make another loan 50-100K for another 5 or 10 years to build a proper house if that's what we wanted lah, else buy more container after 5 years and make it better

hence, maximum loan years is 5 or 10 years

i am downsizing my need but aiming for bigger life
means, i dont want to live life worried about loan, uncertainties

just work hard for few years and later enjoy the time for our golden time (aging)

my pov lah, u dont have to follow mine, i seek no judgement as i dont ask people to follow mine smile.gif

Good. You do that for temporary stay & learn what & what nots on building a compact house.
Later build a proper (or bigger) one with all the features that best fit your life & environment.

For budget yet good heat insulation roof, use zinc sheet with wood prank underneat. It block the sun out 100%.

i applause your effort. some people will say it's impossible (as usual), but they themselves don't dare to try it.
building with sand and bricks will cost a lot more than a cabin constructed like this.
those that worry too much about the heat penetration certainly have never worked inside an AC-ed cabin before.

good luck. if you're interested in rainwater supplementary system read the last few pages of my build thread. there's quite some technical discussion about it.

p/s: makes much sense spending RM50k and getting a landed house rather than spending half a million for a studio unit eh.

QUOTE(lucifah @ Nov 18 2014, 09:46 PM)
it's called laminated flooring

the material is either MDF or recycled rubber. if you want to save cost, use 12mm waterproof plywoods instead

and as for the kalebet u keep saying, it's actually culvert

if you need water supply, just use a 90-deg TEE and connect it from any existing pipeline that belongs to you (or your neighbor)

you'd also need some form of ventilation, so a 2-fan system will be the easiest. you'd need another ventilation fan inside the toilet for obvious reasons

you will need noise insulation for the upper deck. when it rains, it will be quite deafening inside

the easiest way to insulate is to use 2" rock wool and fix it to the underside of the upperdeck with 2" chicken wire mesh (easily available). weld some 3" steel rod so u can tie the chicken wire mesh. it will look ugly, so cover it up with 9mm plywoods.

good luck.

*
yup, visited the cabin, but the material is cabin (zink) not container (metal)

cabin is cheaper but high maintenance and very light
container is minimum rate 2tonne

i wish for expansion too, looking forward for company bonus, lol

i like this question
many asked what about heat problem

simple je, if you expose the metal to sun directly, the heats expanding inside the container

but if you insulate from outside

you dont even let the heat reach the container, so no interior insulation needed, do it externally

in which i will use roof 8 feet high, used pallet outside

i have an exhaust fan and aircond, exhaust to be ran 24/7 using solar hopefully if ada money extra
*
the exhaust fan you are using - is it the one that you use with aluminum duct pipes ??

the solar ballast/regulator is cheap ... but the panels ??
i am thinking for a set up as well ... planning to get car batteries (especially from hybrid cards) cause small enough to fit into my room

For rm15k for the container, still acceptable..
If u have budget u can construct small house.
It's doable but really2 need to control budget. Maybe minimum rm30k for small house..

cash but use loan
indeed doubled but i prefer container

Nice work and I support you. I just hope that majlis won't kacau and give you the green light for this. My friend tries to apply permit to build a container shop and they give a lot of bullcrap excuse. Even goes as far to say that it is not safe. The best part is if it is not in their guideline, no matter how safe the thing is, it will still be illegal to them.

its hell when no aircond and bad planning / design

the structure is perfect!
it's just retired from international logistic standards

the container even requires logistic for transport before reused.
so the structure needs to be intact n working of course

Good. You do that for temporary stay & learn what & what nots on building a compact house.
Later build a proper (or bigger) one with all the features that best fit your life & environment.

For budget yet good heat insulation roof, use zinc sheet with wood prank underneat. It block the sun out 100%.

i applause your effort. some people will say it's impossible (as usual), but they themselves don't dare to try it.
building with sand and bricks will cost a lot more than a cabin constructed like this.
those that worry too much about the heat penetration certainly have never worked inside an AC-ed cabin before.

good luck. if you're interested in rainwater supplementary system read the last few pages of my build thread. there's quite some technical discussion about it.
p/s: makes much sense spending RM50k and getting a landed house rather than spending half a million for a studio unit eh.

yup, thats how i will do it on top of the container, an 8 feet roofing using zink and maybe use coconut leaves to cover the zink, noisy ******* when it rains
*
Fuuuk no need coconut leaves... just put papan under the zinc sheet. It stop the noise too.

If wanna high class, use aluminium sheet aka aluminium louvre... RM17 psqft

+1

summore would prefer the container to be raised up as much as 1 feet above the ground level.
*
if u read my blog, i already added concrete like compound on the land, separating soil and dirts from the container, and the container itself will be placed on almost 1 feet rock to hold it higher then the common ground

so, later i will put few items to make it cleaner asn easier for maintenance

like the sea shell found by sea side and place it all over the perimeter of the container

My friend tries to apply permit to build a container shop and they give a lot of bullcrap excuse. Even goes as far to say that it is not safe. The best part is if it is not in their guideline, no matter how safe the thing is, it will still be illegal to them.

QUOTE(azreeceli @ Nov 18 2014, 10:03 PM)
heres my plan

to build a house will cost minimum 100K for nowadays
it is almost impossible i can afford that amount of money and commitment to pay

so i use this method
short term plan for long term ease

means, buy land 1st, 35K, but loan 50K
so use extra 15k for container to live for 5 years until loan 5 years finished

after 5 years, make another loan 50-100K for another 5 or 10 years to build a proper house if that's what we wanted lah, else buy more container after 5 years and make it better

hence, maximum loan years is 5 or 10 years
i am downsizing my need but aiming for bigger life

Wow good luck.
That day i saw on astro new channel, Tiny House Nation.
Maybe you can watch that series to inspire how to build your house and and arrange your furniture.

well to get a piece of land to do this would be a problem already.

i assume there is no more cheap land around klcc area so we can build a container house.

if i were to stay somewhere very far from town, then the question would be what would happen to my high paying job?

for now heres the timetable of my project

end of nov
- container partially done with wiring, painting
- electricity n water supply should be applied

early dec
- expecting for utilities supply n completion of my outside toilet to berak etc

mid dec
- interior 70% furnishing
- start landscapping

basically, the container will arrive this Friday at the land, so i can begin other parts of the project slowly DIY
u guys are welcome to come and bring used item from home to donate / sponsor

u can rent on top of apartment / shoplot and place it there

or buy a bus and convert to motorhome

any

many ways

i am thinking to ask for the gov to allow youngsters to place container house below flyovers or even inside big roundabout
at least there are people to manage the area and less maintenance to cut rumput etc, and very helpful for youngsters who just started working etc

rent on top of condo/apartment/shoplot would usually incur some monthly fees.
hard to find a place to park a bus for long term. park it in residential area, residents will complain because we eat up their parking space.
park it in open parking, those people operating the parking will not like it, 1 bus = 4 cars parking fees at least.
put it in a roundabout, people will then start to build house in roundabout, if dbkl saman then, then they will complain those container as well.
hard to find a good way to introduce container house in the city.

but i like your idea.

I believe those are the questions T'S already cracking his head out during his first brainstorming stage. What we saw in this thread is already past the challenge session on execution level already.
Excuse me but I think it's not nice to throw non constructive comments at this point, in one way or another, your problem this n that already shown by example, can be sorted out.
Let us focus on the progress instead, haha icon_rolleyes.gif

yup kons

i've been posting in my blog to convert a lorry / bus as home last year
but it's not ideal when we're considering the majlis will kacau

even the idea is relevant but to execute it is another factor (we are all alone, not so many documented / shared their experience)

but i managed to ignore all the worries for execution part and here i am now in the middle of the process (even many uncertainties coming)

i am worried about my job too, if now im driving 10 minutes to work, now i add another 20 for it
and i am to live life with a balance of RM600 / month now at every salary for 5 years

meaning, i need to work more on freelancing (make website to sustain life)

but 600 is enough for me considering i will cook myself and dont have much to do except for DIYing a lot of things as hobby

and if u ask me am i scared or not, hell yes i'm scared, i can say i will be robbed / the house broken in first few month

robbers around will surely interested to know what's inside

tq pepper

it's the solution now not future

many containers are being wasted
many houses are ruined with war
many loses home with earthquake
many loses hope with landslide demolishing their house
many lost house due to banckruptcy
many are homeless and living under the bridge
many and many other problems can be simple solved with this

'container home'

even out there, many living wealthy life without thinking about those unfortunate

hey you are most welcomed to join why not

a container will cost around 10K, so 3 container means 30K

that will gives you quite a decent design with that amount of budget

unlike me, my budget is limited

looking forward for more container home, so i can document it inside the website

good question

if you construct anything on pertanian status land, no cf is needed or even plan for approval

unless:
you make housing loan and the bank requires all the plan and approval / support letter

as long its tanah pertanian, you can build anything,

look at rumah kampung design, macam2 even senget even pakai zink, kenapa majlis x kacau? sebab its tanah pertanian

but i wish the majlis can do some research to ensure containe home as recognized design and inhabital home

they should learn from new zealand

Update 1 18/11/2014

My question for this will be won't it be noisy at times when u walking or heavy movement or during raining?

No.2, maintenance cost?

No.3 legal ah? This looks more like homestay program or eventually hotel type of business.

No.4 If u do this at places with lots of greens/ environmentally friendly place confirmed successful and can attract a lot foreigners. They paling suka this type of things.

Nice container u got there, my area container all rusted top to bottom baru let go for sale..5k to 7 k include transport... if u got money buy 1 more, put it 12 feet apart and the middle u build normal roof structure from steel or aluminium to cover the 2 just like normal house roof.. the middle will be your living room and the next container will be your room.

5k rusty? not a nice deal
transport is cheap if they use side loader.

for the time being i dont have much money left, so i will stick with 1 container 1st and look for the trend of my space requirement, and then improve
all of my concern now is basic needs

good question
if you construct anything on pertanian status land, no cf is needed or even plan for approval

unless:
you make housing loan and the bank requires all the plan and approval / support letter

as long its tanah pertanian, you can build anything,

look at rumah kampung design, macam2 even senget even pakai zink, kenapa majlis x kacau? sebab its tanah pertanian

but i wish the majlis can do some research to ensure containe home as recognized design and inhabital home

they should learn from new zealand
*
Ahh. I never knew this. Thought all houses need majlis approval in order to get water/electricity connections.

BTW, what makes u decide on 20' container instead of 40'/45'? is it the cost?

nope, tnb n syabas requires snp n geran only

yes cost, the condition of the soil also doesnt permint bigger trainler and crane to come in
and i can maximize from 20 to 36 easily by making a rooftop extension hehe

it makes no sense to buy a small studio unit for half a million when a nice land plot could still be had for RM35k, eh?

you know once you have the proper land title (geran tanah) you could initiate a loan to build a better house. the interest rate will be the same as buying a house. it doesn't matter if the land is under tanah pertanian status or tanah pembangunan. an agriculture status land would still entitle you to build one house for the owner.

someone will come in an say, nope, there's no such loan. and saying it's bull$hit. this is kopitiam after all.

we did considered the whole container concept at the first land plot that we tried to acquire. the seaside plot in my thread.
but since the land deal didn't go through we didn't proceed.

20 feet containers could be had for RM2k-ish over here. kampung people are buying them and using it as an outdoor store room. decent condition with no leak.
put in on stilts and retain the shell strength so that it can be moved, and viola! it doesn't count as a permanent construction. you'll get A LOT OF LEEWAY, even in the eyes of the law. hence why the local council doesn't have any law regarding a container house, because it can't be counted as a permanent structure.

we considered the whole container concept so that we could build right next to the shore line, and the container on stilts provide such possibility.
check with your local council.

LOL

it doesn't matter when you drive the pile, as long as not during the rain as the hazard of the pile slip and fall is high when it is wet / raining

if you do piling during monsoon, the soil will get soggy and the it will be difficult to move the piling rig around to all the piling points

Actually beside those container house,i rather our gov settle down these abandoned bus and modify them into liveable house or some kind of store...
that's what ppl already did in outside malaysia like making an old plane into a restaurant, old subway with train into a motel, old bus into shelter for poor.
that could just work the same like container house...
p/s: last time i working at side,so i'm habit to live in container...
it's just look like a normal room after u modify it with carpet, wallpaper & small funiture. thumbup.gif

first time i see people use weather to set the pile
usually we just drive the pile to set, either by skin friction or to hard rock layer
hmm.gif
*
i didn't use the weather to set the pile. it's just that the weather isn't conducive to start building.
so might as well pile before monsoon and leave it to rest through the not-so-favorable weather. make sense?

QUOTE(azreeceli @ Nov 20 2014, 10:15 AM)
it's better to pile after monsoon i think, is it?
*
i'm depending on friction to hold the structure. as the soil underneath the plot is quite soft because it's an agriculture land. so like it or not we need to let it set. would you rather let it set through dry season when it's best to work with cement or let it set through monsoon season when it rains heavily everyday?
after monsoon there's gonna be a few month of dry season, esp during march. that time is good to start construction as there's very little rain and the weather is very predictable.

if you're opting for friction to hold the pile, you need to let it rest. so you could pile before the monsoon starts, let it set through the monsoon and start construction after the rainy season passed.
if you start piling after monsoon, by the time you let it rest you're going to hit the next rainy season already. so missed that dry window.

or, you could pile until you hit the hard layer and it doesn't move anymore. that method you don't need to let it rest, can start immediately. but some soil is just too soft that you're going to need lots of pile for each point. that will certainly not be cheap.

then again, i'm not formally educated in civil engineering so i might be off.

LOL

you need to study more on foundation engineering

skin friction is not dependent on the weather or how wet the soil is

piles are driven deep underneath the soil, thus any monsoon or dry weather will not aggect it in any way

if it does affect, then you will be in deep trouble as your house will start to settle unevenly everytime monsoon season arrives wink.gif

Our famous malay actor is also intoxicated with my plan, Beto Khusyairy is another enthusiast in the making.
We both met when I went for paragliding at Bukit Jugra, we did talked about container house and my design was shown to him
After he helped me for my flight and we had our late evening nasi lemak talk and he did mentioned to do it for his own and his waifu

Beto posted in his instagram that night after our activity

And last night i mentioned him about the progress and he's so excited

2 genuine questions:

1) does time improve the pile friction to the ground?
2) would a pile left to set for 1 minutes have the same friction to it compared to a pile left to set for 1 month?

Well they purposely build fragile/easily destroyed house at high possiblity of tornado occurance. But every house got underground bunker. Build sturdy strong house costly. It will be destroyed too after all.

i don't know your friend. he might be a phd engineer. ayam just a normal bra seller.

but last time when we do load test, once pile is driven to set, we put all the loads up and straight away read the gauge for a few weeks laugh.gif

he no have phd. but he civil engineer in the area here. housing projects in alor setar and kangar, mostly in the same condition as my plot.
he visited the site, asked the pile that we're using, the method and suggested rest time of 3 months.

from his mouth, he's never seen a pile move after 1 month rest. they're also not piling to set because it's cheaper. need 3-4 pile back-to-back if the piles are driven to set. too deep soft clay in these area.

just to be safe, we did asked a couple more of them for advice. wife works in jkr so civil engineer is aplenty.

its an abstract not a finding/conclusion biggrin.gif looks like coming fr a perhaps undergrads thesis too, lotsa thesis actually has no real findings.

i understand the claim. as if the soil will grip the pile after sometimes.
but thats not always the case and its not always imrpoving the load bearing capacity per se
even if there are, to what significant? can be doubled or tripled right hmm.gif
but as for the soil, yeah, you can improve the soil condition in that 3 months by the way biggrin.gif

bakau pile always driven in for the mere friction, not to set one, can withheld light load, straight away put also no prob

The container u use to make house is 20'GP or 40'GP?

Aku ingat nak buat satu kat kampung aku, Base guna 40'OT sebab all 4 side pillars lagi kukuh and dense than a normal 40'GP. Beli seaworthy containers dekat Port Klang, fabricate the internals within Port Klang (i have a few contacts who does office containers) then transport using a side loader , rumah mobile ! laugh.gif

Sayang sekali 45'GP container cuma available dekat negara negara eropah, kalau tidak memang besar rumah 1 tingkat!!

a kitchen without ventilation fan and cover/door that seperate the kitchen is a big nononono for a person who does cooking.

better setup your kitchen at outside with cement floor and a roof

change your kitchen into a shelve with hidden single bed (incase got visitor sleep over) and on top of the hidden bed a table diguise as compartment which can be used as storage or table if needed
above it a shelve/ some compartment for storage

with this you save up a lot space
