No Joaquin Phoenix For Dr Strange

Fans convinced that Joaquin Phoenix becoming our Doctor Strange is all but a done deal might want to put away their Eye of Agamotto. According to Badass Digest, Phoenix is still very much in the running, but is balking right now at the finish line for two reasons: One, the traditionally lengthy Marvel contract, which could tie down the eclectic actor more than he'd like. And two, Phoenix isn't sure he can pull off a role in the Marvel system, with its massive green screen and VFX, its huge scope and scale of productions, and its extensive reshoots. Remember, this is an actor used to doing much more intimate, smaller films, so it's a testament to him that he can recognize that he would not be as comfortable in this type of production.

Keanu Reeves Talks DOCTOR STRANGE and His Stance on Comic Book Movies in General

For the past week or so since Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of negotiations to play the title role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange (and even before that really if you go back a few months) the internet has been torn virtually asunder by chatter regarding whom might be right for the role.  One of the names that has been bandied about in recent days is Keanu Reeves and I can see why he’s a fan casting favorite.  Not only does he have the right look and demeanor for the role, but he’s worked with director Scott Derrickson before on The Day the Earth Stood Still.

QUOTE
From a practical standpoint the idea of a longtime contract is sort of “errr” because you want to make sure the material is up to a certain level.  Like the good or great level.  I like the idea.  I go to those kinds of movies.  I grew up on them and comics and graphic novels.  [But] I didn’t know Doctor Strange as a character, I didn’t read that as a kid.  I’m gonna have to read it. I remember reading something… who’s going to play Doctor Strange? Would I be good for the role?

QUOTE
That Crazy Old Wizard Ewan McGregor Is In The Running For Doctor Strange

With Joaquin Phoenix out of the running for Doctor Strange Marvel has had to go back to the drawing board to figure out who will headline their next big franchise. They have their director, they're getting their script together, they just need their star. So who is it gonna be?

Yesterday a new source contacted me and said that Ewan McGregor had been prepping for the role - doing the usual research actors do when looking at taking on an adaptation or existing character. I contacted one of my usual sources and asked if this was true, and I was told "They're looking at him."

Looking at him! That's sort of vague, I'll admit it, but with the casting starting over again this at least tells us what direction Marvel is taking the character. I was kind of hoping that with Phoenix out they might go alternative - a black actor, perhaps - but they're hitting white and middle aged (Phoenix is 39, McGregor is 43).

Keanu did say in a reddit AMA that he had not considered the role, and no one approached him.

I can see why Keanu Reeves can actually do the role well.

There has been so many tragedies in his personal life. And With Doctor Strange, all the emotion is always under the skin.

If I was the power to be in Marvel, I would seriously consider him!!

obsessed as an actor or his name?

as an actor he is one of the best..he can really get into the characters..iinm he still do theater..but his selection of projects much more unstable (he dont mind doing silly projects also) compared to Leo, Fassbender or even Tom Hardy..

other than that..comment section of reddit, 9gag obsessed with his name..Benestick Cuddlematch biggrin.gif

Watched some of his ol' movies like Stuart a life backward & recently Imitation Games.

He looked more of being 1 dimensional actor but still I could dig it with that as long he delivered.

British actors..

Incrediblely and generally seemed more talented than the american counterparts. Converse the language with such clarity, of course some american lingo isn't their 2nd languange.

In the league with Michael fassbender and those new gen actors.

Sherlock vs Hannibal
laugh.gif

well, I think this movie is meant to be watch in IMAX 3D format, since they said they've created more than 1 hours of IMAX footage
it's 4K in IMAX vs fullHD in normal cinema

the chase scenes were really involving, with the building twisting & splitting on the big screen, it's really awesome, your orientation will be confused by it as well
it's similar to those theme parks 3D rides, you chair ain't moving, but you'll feel you're moving
But one thing for sure, some surely will come out complaining some scenes makes them dizzy and even nauseating laugh.gif

too bad HRD wasn't available here yet, else this would be even more amazing

Also it seems the story line is set immediately after the CA: Civil War
as there are reference to Iron Patriot's back injury in the sneak peek
there are some other reference as well but I can't quite catch them

It's the best possibility for it to be the fifth gem stone; 'Time'

http://www.slashfilm.com/doctor-strange-ey...infinity-stone/

Kevin Feige:
QUOTE
In this film, the Eye is a very important relic that can be quite dangerous if used in the wrong hands, because it has the ability to do any number of things, the most dangerous of which is, it can sort of manipulate probabilities. Which is also another way of saying, ‘screw around with time’ — which is part of our story.

The trailer is superb but the casting for The Ancient One is meh... its like the scene in Batman Begin teacher Ra's Al ghul become woman.

From Ancient Asian Old Man became Bald White Woman.. and the original story dated from 1963.. so alot of fans gonna rage

Doctor Strange (2016)

Is there a role that Benedict Cumberbatch cannot be?

So in short Benedict Cumberbatch IS Dr. Strange!!

Alot of flak on the production team for casting Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One.

I am indifferent to the choice.

Let just say I am numb to Hollywood whitewashing everything...

Not one of Marvel strongest movie.

It is definitely one of the stranger story (though strangely familiar)

Let me put it this way

Strong 1st and 2nd act.

Not so strong 3rd act!!

Yes, there are two mini movies at the end.

My Two Sen

So the movie any good? Personally I find this year best superhero is Deadpool. Second will be Apocalypse 😎 The rest can consider kinda disappointing although not all bad. So where do Dr Strange stand? Probably among its Marvel peers. Better than > Guardian / Lelaki Besi / Kapitan Amerika Syarikat? Gracias 😁

I thought it's highly entertaining despite the rushed first act, poor character development and familiar origin story tropes.

This coming from a non-Marvel fan.

Pros:
Visually stunning, wonder how long the CGI team spent on creating the worlds/multiverse

Very trippy experience (in a good way)

Benedict Cumberbatch is perfect for the role, as well as Tilda as Ancient One (doesn't deserve all the flak she gets)

Their costumes are awesome, love the mystical touch and the Cloak of Levitation!

Cons:
Would be better without the lame jokes
Not a very intimidating foe
Fighting scenes and climax are so-so (relies heavily on the Inception-style effect). Missing the 'epic moment'.

Overall still pretty good.
9/10

Overall it's the same old marvel schtick. Formulaic structure with underwritten villain that again using a highly respectable actor to portray a bad dude that don't really matter a whole lot. The effects was intriguing at first then overreaching when it hits the ending. The experience is like watching the first Ironman all over again with a different skin. Cool set-up but not enough substance to be great. Depending on you, it could be a bad thing or a good thing. At the end, it's not that movie brave enough to be above all the past MCU movies.

To quote Jasper, "Zola's algorithm evaluates people past to predict their future". Strange at that time might not be super-powered, but his endeavors might trigger the algorithm as 'dangerous to Hydra', through "your bank records, medical histories, voting patterns, emails, phone calls, your damn SAT scores!".

Oh i love it.. Worth my 31 imax ticket..
Although i want more deeper or powerful stuff but this is the just first installment.. I dont mind the cheesy jokes.. I love every benedict cumberbatch n benedict wong scene..
Is it strange i kinda see some sherlock in strange.. Like his attitude and street name.. Its like doctor who tardis meets sherlock.. Both of my fav tv show..
Mads mikelsen is okay.. I guess they cut the gory stuff so is not 18pg movie..

Stunning CGI
Overall movie worth watching

Looks like Marvel add humour in their movies while DC seems more serious

Very entertaining movie. Character progression was way too fast, but I like Strange and all the mind blending action was fantastic

And the new Marvel Studios logo was awesome

Watched this for tilda swinton the queen

But anyway as a non marvel comic fan, I kinda wish there would be less universe-ish scenes like the scene when Strange met Ancient One.

But it's a fun movie.

I believe that was the main point and focus for this movie...introducing us audience the existing of multiverses inside the MCU.

That scene was so trippy and it brought me in awe!!

Also you pointed out Tilda as Ancient One being awsome...i whole heartedly agree! I mean....damn! Her fight scenes!!! Damn it was good.

I hope Doc Strange can fight like that in Infinity Wars....hahahaha. Since he is now the official Sorcerror/Wizard Supreme of Earth.

Star Lord!!!! Holy shit im getting soooo excited for the Infinity Wars movie.

Imagine the interactions of Doctor Strange & Star Lord when they meet the Avengers. Hype!!!!

You know, what surprised me the most was that one "entity"...very early they revealed "him". A big set up for the next phases of MCU.

Marvel is lacking of mr fantastic. It would be great to have reed richards arguing with stark and strange in mcu. Hopefully they can negotiate to get them like they did with Spider-Man. Fantastic four is a flop anyway. I'm not concern much about xmen since they kinda like a universe themselves even without mcu and they are going to be extinct themselves in the comics.

I give the movie 4/10.

Typical special effects filled movie...but the dialogue and screen writing and characters are downright lame as fuck.

So strange as the all positive guy who went to nepal on a whim to get the miracle cure, upon reaching there suddenly act all ahhh i dont believe in this hocus pocus crap and even after seeing miracles infront of him he still acted all ahhh doesnt this dont make sense bla bla bla.

I find that hugely unrealistic.

I also dislike scenes where the unaccustomed hero played dumb and bungling all over a different culture. Its not funny, jackie chan is famous for repeating this sort of nonsense in his film, they r not funny and quite simply ridiculous except for the very first bungling character scenes in the Drunken Master.

Disney with multiple it's multiple properties/studios intends to hit every variant of audience market... except for maybe rated R audiences...

Verdict of Dr. Strange in the MCU.... still manage to retain/maintain within the probability of real (or hypothetical) science.... IM3 still remains the outlier as BS science...

This means you are biased since you haven't even watched and you straight away bashed the movie terribly. Everyone has their own opinions towards movies. I even watched DC Extended Movies, and I think it's worth watching.

It still marvels me (pardon the pun) how seamlessly they can integrate a new character into MCU. This character to me kinda tricky with all the ancient wisdom / energy harvest / time twisting plot.

Definitely one of the highlight films of 2016.

Easily a 9/10 from me.

Stunning visuals; love, love the trippy universe scenes.

Brilliantly paced; just the right momentum in every scene.

Love the humor; humor is thrown all over the film in some really surprising ways.

...and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Nailed the role as Dr Strange. I would go as far as saying he had the same charisma as Robert Downey Jr. / Tony Stark.

Can't wait for more Marvel universe flicks.

This is how you do it.

Money well spent.

love how it does not drag out the origin story (spiderman anyone?).
pacing was good for me as it throws you into the action thick and deep from the second half onwards.

female lead was very weak. nice to look at somewhat.
a few baffling scenes but suspend your beliefs and you shall be fine.

love the product placement (lambo, watch).

one of the easiest guilt flicks around which is very easy to digest.

Again, same problem as with other Marvel movies, a very forgettable villain. They need to stop killing villains and find other alternative ends to them.

The humour n laughers were ok.

Underwhelming to me. perhaps not Benedict Cumberbatch better outings. Personally I think the the direction (by the director) could have been better.

Then again, dr strange is probably tough to put it with the more popular superhero movies

They shud make a villain that people will remember such as Loki and Thanos.

not really looking forward to thor as I did not like the first two that much. It is still good movies but it is the weakest of all the MCU movies. And in some way they Thor's world is like a god realm which is hard to integrate into human world. Apart from Loki, there are really no good villain in Thor. Like someone said, most villains in MCU is really badly done. Hoping that Thanos will be the most worthy of all villain in Infinity War.

I just finish watching it a few days ago. It is almost true to original comic version. I know a lot of people does not like this comic. But i read this like almost every day when i was a kid. So sad when my comic got trashed by termites. There is another few more powerful stuff that is not mentioned. Like Veil of Vishanti. Eye of Agamoto already shown.

Baron Mordo is supposed to be a fatter mongolian looking guy. Ancient one is supposed to look like those a shaolin monk. In the comics Dr Strange also call on Dormammu to defeat some more stronger beings.

I would've agree with you about Thor Ragnarok if it wasn't for the fact that it has Taika Waititi as director. Dude is damn good at setting up dynamic comedy.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Well, kiddies I hope everyone had a good celebration and brought your big person's pants...

Why?

Well, if you do watch this, do note that this can be categories as.... HORROR (my favorite cup of tea)!

There are alot of cheers in the cinema during the movie, so if you can and if it is safe, watch it in a big cinema and crowd!

Benedict Cumberbatch brought it. He really did.

There were alot of speculations about who would cameo here.

Some valid, some not so (hence the cheering).

Overall this is a very entertaining movie.

A really far cry from Marvel's last outing (Eternals)

My only complain would be the scoring, alot of the "Asian" were in the score early in the movie and then it "disappeared"... Magic?

Go watch this. No matter what I say you will. So just go kiddies, just go watch this. Remember to wear your big person's pants.

My Two Sen

P.S. there are two end credit scene, The first one worth it the second, meh...

I watch on the first day of release since its was a PH and i manage to get a good ticket.

It was very good and love Benedict and Elizabeth acts in the movie. Top notch. Although i wish Dr Strange would fight more coz he spend half the time in that movie running. LOL

Scarlet Witch was soo powerful (girl crush) and she eliminate the other superhero from other dimension with ease.

Anyone wanna watch this movie should finish Wanda Vision and What If series first or u'll be confuse by some of the movie plot. Unless u r the Marvel comic geeks.

Overall.. LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie and Benedict Cumberbatch is born to act as Dr Strange.

Nowadays you'll need to watch MCU's trailers with a huge pinch of salts
lots of misdirection in it laugh.gif

anyway, if you're familiar with Sam Raimi's work, this movie is full of his horror signatures all over it thumbup.gif
even his pal is making a cameo laugh.gif

Watched it in IMAX, worth every penny... rclxms.gif
especially at the unique battle involving "notes"... I doubt normal hall's speakers will be able to reproduce the impactful sound effects there

Always felt that Wanda is just some small time character with weak magic powers only capable of small time magic tricks. Suddenly now become so powerful. Awkward feel but ok....

The way she was brought down also..... aiya....

Fully agree that one has to watch WandaVision before watching Dr Strange because there's no time for the movie to explain what happened to Wanda.

Not just that, some details of the movie can be further explained if you've seen WHAT IF (the Marvel animation), and you'll be quite blur if you've yet to watch either Spiderman NWH or Loki (the series) as these 2 explore the theme of multiverse.

When I first watched Dr Strange MoM at the cinema, I didn't quite like it. Mentally I wasn't prepared for the Avenger vs Avenger thingy laugh.gif (fighting within family... noooooo). But as I watched it again last weekend, my mind was more open (aka less judgmental) and because of that, I find myself actually enjoying the film.

Actually Wanda is spose to be Scarlet Witch and she is the most 'powerful' sorcerer/sorceres in the Universe. Its just that in the Avengers movie they didnt shed more light on her..

I feel like if Wanda didnt surrender to her humanity in that movie.. Dr Strange can't win. Thats just how powerful she is.

I just repeat NWH in Netflix.. And surprisingly i realize that i'm annoyed with Peter Parker in that movie.

Even with all the warning from Dr Strange he still proceed to do the opposite.

Well maybe its his character but he's the reason all the chaos happen in the first place.
