p/s cant imagine myself working part time in a foreign country....coz i've nvr even worked in malaysia b4  blush.gif

well in order to work in Australia whilst studying, you need to apply for a student visa with work permit.

in order to get one, you'll need to wait till your uni is in session. once the semester starts, you could apply for a student visa either online or through the old fashion way which is going to the immigration office and wait your ass off laugh.gif

when uni is in session, just inform the uni that you would like to apply for a work permit. if you would like to do this online, they'll shoot off a letter to the immigration office. then an hour later, you can go to the immigration website and apply through there. the work permit for now is AUSD 60, be sure to have a credit card ready. once you finish filling in the form, wait for 1/2 hour, your application would have most probably been approved by then (yes i got mine approved after 30 minutes). by then you would have received the email that would be considered as your student visa with work permission. next thing to do is to head down to the immigration office and get your passport labeled with a visa label.

if you would like to do it the old fashion way, you need a letter from uni. then you need to head down to the immigration office and apply there. whole process might take up to a month wink.gif

about the jobs, well initially it can be quite hard to look for jobs (i'm speaking from my own experience here in Brissy). i got my current job from a friend of mine (networking with the right people at the right place wink.gif ). jobs here are well paid, starting from AUSD 14 onwards. McD pays their part timers 15 an hour if i'm not mistaken. before you start looking for part time jobs though, do prepare your resume (even if its working in McD wink.gif )

Hi here from adelaide. currently in my final year of computer systems engineering in adelaide uni. Like what other fellow members here said, adelaide is a peaceful and slow city. an article in a newspaper few weeks ago states that adelaide is the most affordable city for international student. i couldnt't agree more. apart from recent hikes in public transport fairs, cost of living in this city is considerably lower than in sydney or melbourne. most significant is accomodation, much lower in adelaide compared to the 2 big cities.

Its actually quite common for international students to work part-time to gain some extra income while studying. Again it depends whether you can handle the workload of uni coursework combined with max 20 hours per week of work. If you can I will highly recommed you go for it as the experience will look good in your resume a few years time.

Some of the jobs that people usually go for could be within the university itself whether at the union shops that sells food & drinks, library as shelves assistants, restaurants&cafes, supermarkets like coles&woolworths and many more.

Regarding never worked before all of us need to start somewhere as eventually when you graduate you still need to work. So if you could get some aussie part-time work under your belt will definitely give you a different experience. cool.gif cool.gif

not really. doing it online is easy. just inform uni, wait for an hour. go to the website, fill in the form, pay by credit card, and 30 minutes later, voila! your visa's done!

only work you need to do is to head over to the nearest immigration office to let them put a visa label on your passport smile.gif

your permission to work will expire when your student visa expires smile.gif

immigration wont know if you work more than 20 hours a week, unless someone stab you in the back and report it to immigration. neither do employers nor taxation department will report you to the immigration.

having said that, i strongly recommend you not to work more than 20 hours a week during semester. study first, work second. but when it's holiday, it's ok if you dont need the rest.

i had a couple of jobs before, pizza delivery boy, average pay, about $15/hr before tax on average. but you have to have your own car, thumbs down.

i worked as a cleaner $15/hr no tax, tired as hell and hav to work 8 hrs a shift

my best job has to be a food runner in an aussie restaurant. $18/hr before tax but it's the most stress out of all the jobs i've done, in a good way though.

if you're under 18, chances of you being employed, especially from fastfood frenchise is very high. they dont really want to hire over 18 as the pay rate is a lot higher. if you are employed as under 18, they will still keep you when you're over 18 becoz you already hav the experience.

whatever you work, dont look for chinese/asian employer, bad pay and bad treatment

woah, many lowyatians studying in OZ. Former UOW student here, llived in the gongs for like 2 years...I love the beach and some white ass too.

haha..

cheers.

For Asian jobseekers in OZ, not easy to get a job there. Race and competition will narrow you down. Unless, you are a top student or with experience. Otherwise, it will take you a life-time to find a good job (as professionals).

but the prob is the prospect of nanotech is not good in malaysia, i doubt multinational companies would like to invest in this field here.

If you are good, you can also be a tutor in your senior years. The unis pay really well (or mine at least).

Come to UNSW for Engineering and Computing related studies. But, of course, the only problem, is that it's in Sydney. It seems many people here are not too fond of Sydney...

^^ Thats not entirely true, I know some M'sian friends who study at UNSW, UTS, and SydU. There may not be much who come here as opposed to those in Adelaide, Perth or even Melbourne; where I heard a bulk of M'sian students are there.

By the way, I'm a soon to be a graduate from University of Tech. Sydney biggrin.gif

Just to clarify, there is a "Melbourne University" and a "The University Of Melbourne"
both are in Melbourne, Victoria state. One is something like a private branch of the other...forgot which way round though.
