This will be for long term for the next 10-20 years, maybe retirement emergency fund as well. Currently only depending on the EPF + some FDs, wanted to diversify a bit. Is gold the right choice for this purpose?

From some reading I understand that for example Maybank or UOB I can just walk in their branches and cash out the coins based on the published rate. Is this correct? Just wanna make sure the flexibility in cashing out during emergencies.
*
The investment duration seems good. But, what about your priorities? Have u built up your Kwsp, Sspn, emergency funds, housing loans? Like previously shared, these currency investment give u dividends to supplement your income during work life n retirement.

Gold doesn't give dividends, gold is just a store of value. So, pls elaborate, cashing out gold during emergencies? You can see when stocks rise, gold sleeps. When stocks fall, gold falls. So, need to be clear on your emergencies.

Again my thoughts, precedence already set for general public to cash out kwsp during such trying times. Im confident kwsp will continue, so no reason for younger people NOT to max their Kwsp contributions during good times.

Haha, not to frustrate you, nor any selfish intentions. Just ensure your thought process hold water. If all systems go, my next question will be what $$$ will be gold investment and/or % of your networth in gold. Paper or physical gold?

Why gold? Gold is mostly bought by Central Banks, space industry n Eastern people. Why not invest in Industrial Metals like silver? Tesla, Apple, Solar companies uses lots of Ag. (On the flip side, dont u think the E Musk, T Cooks, understand the price impact of this commodity on their P&L? Im sure they're party into shorting price of Ag, Cu, Zn, etc) If we cant even trade a single stock well, theres no way we can trade Ag ($1T), Au ($8T), too many considerations n too big.

Get the strategy firmed up, whether kijang, maple, kru, bar vs coin etc is not the priority.

As someone who is planning to start buying physical gold and silver, but is always relocating between different countries

I know there is a limit of $10,000 worth of asset (cash, gold, check) that you can take with you when you leave a country.

I am thinking if buying physical gold and silver is a good idea?
*
Actually, if above usd10k, must declare. Doesnt mean cannot take out of country.
No issue with cash, why carry so much, bank account need not declare.
Just declare in-out, n show proof of local purchase, u shud be ok.

Yeah. That's what I thought. As long as I declare and say they are my coins. It should be fine.

Just have to be careful when having PM on me during travelling in airport as not to get stolen
*
Good to have some fears n scenario planning (what u doing now) vs a green horn.
My worry has always been the destination airport customs. ( i mean the corrupted ones).
Personally, i hand carried some large amounts of cash back to MY to make purchases, the biggest was SGD450K.
The MY Customs officer wanted to see the stack.

Most of my net worth are in Bitcoin and is planning to diversify into physical gold and silver that's why I ask.

I still believe Bitcoin is the better asset, but I want something that is shiny and I can touch that has lasted 4000 + years. Physical Gold and silver are not going away.
*
Bro, u seem like a well balannced guy, (head screwed correctly), most others are a like owning one or the other.
Good to diversify, u r doing right!

Wow SGD450k in cash? That is more than a million Ringgit.

Did they ask if you work in SG and what is the money used for?
Why didn't you use SWIFT bank transfer or something like Transferswise back then?

I was 100% Bitcoin believer and PM hater last time to be honest. Now that I am open to diversifying into Gold and Silver PM. The reason being that I relocate around a lot and the Custom officers can confiscate your PM but not your Bitcoin. This is the only thing that holds me back from buying huge amount of PM. Now that I first hand listen to your experience of carrying SGD450k cash without any issue, then I am open to the idea of carrying PM around.
*
SG, CBNI form; MY, Borang 22 form, ..take look n familiarize with the forms. Or, such forms other countries u relocating to.
No lah, i very stingy one, i get better rates with my 'friend' money changers....i dislike big banks/institutions earning my $ thru transactions.
Hence, never bothered abt premium/privilege accts, etc.
All the best, to your new journey n frontiers. Congrats!

Hmm, thread very quiet n dropping to obscurity (no longer top 10).
Disclosure, I don't own any BTC (well actually, only RM3 BTC) , I only invest in utility coins....current amt is 0.6% net worth + 0.3% cash deposited in crypto wallet to buy the dip.
My daughters started buying maybank gold.
That's all for now. Thank you.

Pls and thanks!

Thanks, yes indeed bunga raya is more expensive. Poh Kong very cutthroat, selling with exorbitantly high fees if buying with vouchers  vmad.gif
any idea who I can sell back to for lowest spread? (Besides trying to look for people to sell to)
*
If u r not into physical gold stacking, dont force yourself.
Recommend you gift the voucher (to an important extended family member) or sell the voucher (to a colleague thats visibly wearing jewellery).
The voucher cannot be worth $thousands, correct? Likely in $hundred(s).
Alternatively, if u serious in fengshui,...buy a fengshui gold item, maybe can help u Huat Ah!

But I only have poh kong vouchers, from what I understand only lbma and bunga raya are worthwhile to purchase from poh kong? Pls correct me if I'm mistaken thanks

Bro, understand Yr predicament. Caught btw a rock n a hard place. Yr mail suggests u r a saver. Here's the options avail.

#1. Spend just enuf to match the voucher value. So that, u minimize the top-up amount.

#2. Spend to buy the best value item over spot. For me it'll be a 100 grams Lbma. Hold on to voucher, n buy when weakness in gold price. Sell back will be a 5-10% spread.

#3. Gift the voucher to someone u care/love. It'll make u feel like a millionaire. That joy feeling is priceless.

Is Maybank Gold Investment good? I had one and still left minimum 1grams, done nothing with it for years. Bought in 2012 at RM167 per gram. Didn't saw it to be profitable, and I'm lazy to bother to close it either as I have to fish out my passbook, go to bank and so on.
*
Hmm, gold is like past the hype liao. As the top 1% people say...collect when its unloved. Maybank ok lah, ...

Only problem, no dividend earned from phsical gold holdings. As mention, part of asset diversification. Need other investments to offset dividends for this sleeping asset.
Just forum sharing as i enjoy gold stacking.
1. Pamp bars. Buy min 50gms, preferably 100gms, minimize % over spot
2. Rounds 1oz n Fractionals. Higher % compwred to bars
3. Lunar series 100gms n 1oz. Avoid at all cost (where possible). But i appreciate feng shui.
4. 24K jewellery approx 450 gms. Best way to walk thru airports w/o customs check
5. Numesmatic gold. Parts of my solid gold collection by famous late-TH monks. My fav pass time once retired n control this endemic. Shoot documentary on gold talisman.
There's still Quater dollar Liberty Head coins n other jewellery gifted by parents, kept i deposit

I guess you r ard 40-42 yo. Allow me to correct your statement above. Price is always a relative measurement. If u r filthy rich, price is never a concern, E.g Jho Low... Splurging his ill gotten gains on over-priced material things n beautiful people.

Otherwise, I wud consider your comments as condescending. Buy because u anticipate the value of gold, or any other asset appreciating.

I have more trust on Germany inflation data, (as compared to USA,,) . As u can see, inflation spiking. Prices expected to inflate... Always compare prices against your spending power. Pray hard your housing loan interest doesn't go way Up!

Wow, I'm getting interested with this thread. Thanks for sharing. Never knew there are so many types of gold out there! I only know of Kijang, Maple.
So if gold is not for trade purpose, how does it fits long term investment? Or rather hedge against inflation when we are not converting it into cash? hmm.gif

Bro, we start back on the right foot. IMO....

If im just a regular Joe, I wud prioritize my savings into kwsp, sspn, asnb. These shud be my core foundations.
Anything more, i go UT, some stocks. Settle my housing loans.

Gold investment shud be max 10-15%, of your investment class. Gold is a sleeping investment, no dividend.

If i have $1M, i wud put all in kwsp/asnb, at least my family gets $40-60k annual dividends. During good times, asnb dividends approx 6%. Wah, asb, double digit.

If i have >$1M, you split into different assets. Depending on yr risk appetite, stocks vs kwsp/asnb/sspn n maybe medical insurance for wife+yourself, maybe multiple properties for rental$.

Then, if still got excess $, you start to worry abt counterparty risk. What if MY mismanaged? What if RM devalues badly, country becomes a failed state....you invest in gold, farm land, park money overseas, etc.

Price vs Value. Im into crypto. Its a new asset class without counterparty risk. Why whales buying bitcoin at usd$50k. Is the price cheap or store of value appreciating or speculation?
If today, Malaysia financial issue, bitcoin in usa will still be us$50k, but likely >>> rm210k. Its like gold, protecting the value of your depreciating fiat currency. So, its a hedge agains inflation.
By calling it a hedge, how to sell? Its for long term.....theres a chart by mike maloney on gold price vs asset. Before i forget, go youtube n watch Hidden Secrets Of Money, 8 episodes. Super awesome!!!

No point buy gold as priority, until after you settle how yr dividends to pay for food, etc due to job loss, retirement, etc. (Shhhh i tell u secretly, that unker Prophetjul, is a big whale) gold stacking as hobby.

Time to own physical gold?

Liquidated RM400k overseas bond n stocks. Am part of the people thinking major blackswan event approaching fast but dunno when...inflation spike, then by early next year looming deflation.

Plan to DCA nto Maybank gold account DCA + while monitoring liquidity sucked out from klse goldetf (lifeless)

Likely, posturing most into crypto if short term sell off. Fish Eher below $2970, XRP below $0.85.

Hesitant to buy more physical gold due to having emotion conflict with exit strategy. (Buy n never sell. Increase wealth but reduces free cash flow)
Heavy silver n gold manipulation now, expect defining moment in Dec month. Fight btw Commercial Banks vs 'The Others'. We shall see.

Ride the uptrend till yearend, n once total market crashes, convert into currency n bank into sspn, kwsp. To sifus, share your opinion.
