Van Gaal wants quicker play

Louis van Gaal is urging his Manchester United players to quicken the pace of their play, starting with the Barclays Premier League clash against QPR.

The Reds are still in search of a first competitive victory under van Gaal following two draws and two defeats in the opening four league and cup games this season, and the manager says that key to that is increasing the speed in United's passing and the quality of possession, which he has been working hard to improve.

"I think we have to pass much more quickly," he told reporters. "We've lost the ball too much, too early as well. Maybe the reason is because I am demanding much quicker play so the pressure is higher for the players and then they lose the ball. It's a vicious circle."

Asked if the signing of players such as Angel Di Maria will help enhance the quickness of movement and passing, he added: "Yes, but not only Di Maria can speed the game up – when you look at the players we have bought, they have that as well. But they have to show it now. I hope they will do that."

The summer transfer window was certainly a busy one for van Gaal and United and, while the Reds boss is delighted with the additions made to the squad, he admits the defence is still an area he would like to strengthen.

"It's obvious, the defensive part," he said, when asked which part of the team still needs addressing. "We have more balance but it's not balanced enough I don't think."
