scaneagle no much suitable use in so small patrol craft, size, not small launcher and recovery tools, also take alot space ( i means design space for it) , if frigate is ok bcos Helicopter room is big enought,
if really want UAV, Schiebel Camcopter S-100 more suitable,  takeoff and landing just like Helicopter.  store also easy. no launcher and recovery tool.
*
Still too early to said that until we look at the actual design.
s-100 you need hangar and landing platforms

Yeah, I think so too. The UAV is perfect for extending the detection range of the vessel but in view of the size of the patrol vessel, something like a double-mount .50 cal M2 HMG shielded mount on the forward and rear decks may sufficiently be heavy enough for its use.

The APMM are still a law-enforcement agency, not a military unit. Weapons are for self-defence against armed pirates or infiltrators, not for shootouts with other patrol boats.
*
That depend on situation area patrol.
if the area patrol were hot zone like esszone than it is better to have heavier weapons.
if the area shipping zone without pirates than having a water cannon would nice for fire rescue mission.
if the area like selat melaka than some smg would be more than enough.

I just hope PM can give good allocation to APMM each annual budget, so can buy new modern patrol ships each year.

People most of the time complain APMM not doing job in Esszone, but I think they are actually very overstretched covering all peninsular, sarawak and sabah coasts after taking over offshore patrols from marine police. Having forced to use old boats don't help one bit also.

If one see Malaysian map, we can see Malaysia has 2,700km of land borders but 4,650 km of coastline. That's nearly double the land borders. Perhaps this can make people realize how long the Malaysian sea borders are. That's not counting how big the EEZ that projects from
*
Well mmea need to replace lots of boats.
they also need lots of base and outpost to reduce the reponse time.
There is also the question of human resource available.
I do fell that they need to add in 1000 officer at least.

3-4 units per year that too slow to replace.
Should follow the current 7 ship per years would be nice.
I do think mmea need a 6 units large ship that can operate can high sea state.

yes, 7 will be nice, depend Gov budget,
anyway, need to divided to size, more easy to calculate procurement cost and operation cost,
for large ship, means 1000++ Tons? for me, i'm sure yes, now days asean country coast guard ship is bigger and bigger,
we should have few large ship like 2k tons level, but still depend budget an gov policy. like damen maritime patrol ship (OPV) can operate in sea state 9, cost $100~150 mil
*
1800 tonnage -2400 tonnage would be big enough.
Can use kedah class design.

QUOTE(MilitaryMadness @ Oct 16 2014, 02:34 PM)
Don't forget APMM will need more air assets as well to do a thorough job, especially patrol aircraft. Now 3 Dauphin helicopters & 2 Bombardier flying boat good for basic duties only. Need good aircraft for patrolling & SAR, right now no need big one like C-130, small light/medium aircraft should be ok for the time being.

Atr 72 mpa would be a nice addition.

36 is justified
its to replace all fac in TLDM disposal
plus with the condition in Sabah, TLDM must have strong and continuous presence all the time

Hamina very expensive yo.
Gumdoksuri class is much more affordable.

QUOTE(MilitaryMadness @ Oct 21 2014, 10:34 AM)
Another reason for my suggestion for ATM to get one or two variant of the AV8 (the APC version and the 25mm Bushmaster IFV version), maximize its potential on that version and stick with it. Designing 12 other turrets for 12 other uses for the AV8 and trying to make it into a jack-of-all trades is wasteful, redundant and probably will lead to many blind alleys.

I think this ambitious AV8 project is not quite right for Malaysia at this time, maybe in future, but not right now.

user posted image
12 variants? c'mon!
*
I dun think redundant were the right words for its.
nothing wrong with having lots of differ variants and provides differ kind of role.
though some of the variants should be trim off and start withlesser variants will help to make the project more cost effective and able to build in larger number on certain variants.

perhaps they should build AV8 variants batch by batch.
1st batch 3-4 variants build at one time.

when will RMAF receive A400m? 1st quater of 2015?
*
Ideally 3 variants at a time.

Dunno la, for me the AV8 probably not on our military-industrial level. Probably too ambitious and complex, so maybe the project can be vulnerable to cost overruns and quality control issues.

But hopefully FNSS can pick up the slack. Unnecessary complication tho.
*
Well I dun think it too complicated.
cause what I want is even more complicated.
Anyway it is good for our industry to go into complicated stuff.

Every batch AV8 should be around 12 unit. should be 2 variance from Ideally. AFV and IFV
we should be can see our A400M first flight on Early december
our first A400M official handover is Jan 2015,  it depend on test flight.... our version include refueling module, so test flight maybe a bit longer
*
Huh each batch 12 units?
How to achieve economy of scale.
