Well, I believe most user here select US region for more apps. Because less apps under MY region.

2. MY credit card might not work under US regions.
*
malaysia credit card can use in US store, thanks to visa
if you want those apps that are available for malaysia only, switch to malaysia, download then switch back to US market
you will still get the apps updates for Malaysia only apps

Things to check:
check the version of operating system you are running
and also set language to English US, if you have other languages, move English US to the top/primary and then restart
after restart make sure your Speech language also set to English US, and your region also set to English US. if all of these are set, check for "C" Cortana in your app list

For those on WP8.1 Update 1, can try to set to UK or China
you will get Cortana with UK accents and Chinese speaking Cortana, both comes with exclusive content for their region

by stuck i mean, would it be that 830 will not be getting updates because i think i read from somewhere that if you're on 8.1 then you're there.

good to know that there will be support for future updates.

the reason for this fear is that i was one of the early adopters of WP when it first came into Malaysia (ie. Lumia 800). i bought it on the 2nd day of release. it was on WP7. few months later, Windows conveniently announced that all support for WP7 will be terminated HOWEVER they will release WP7.8 to sorta sooth the pain.

it was a very dark day.

that's wrong, Microsoft guaranteed at least two years software support
830 is going to get Windows 10 and two years old 920 will also get it, just maybe some features may only be available for high end device in the future. like Lumia Denim allows 4k recording, 1520 and 930 will get it, but 830 only full hd because of hardware restriction. you will still get the software updates and apps are still able to run

wp7.8 case is a special case
because wp8 uses a new kernel which wp7 device hardware cant support, if we still stick with old kernel that is compatible with wp7 hardware, our apps will be even less, it will be even harder to code for wp
it was actually QUALCOMM try to force Microsoft to make that kind of decision.
with the new CEO im confident that Microsoft will do better than ever before

Microsoft brings cortana on lumia 530, the lowest end device
but Siri cant even run on iPhone 4

yeap. be that as it may but once is quite enough to inflict the fear. that's why now i intend to make proper research and ensure right disclosure of all facts before getting my feet wet once more.

whatever it is, although i appreciate that MS pushes out Lumia 800 back then but i still think they should have withhold it. the time of the first release and the announcement of the termination of support is less than 6 months. MS cannot possibly claim that they have no knowledge and was caught by surprise and was coerced into deciding what they have done. i cannot accept this.

to be fair to Apple, 530 may be the lowest end of the lineup but it was announced in July 2014. the iPhone 4 was in 2010 -.- therefore given the benefit of the doubt, probably whatever that is available at that time would not make a "good" Siri. Heck, even the Siri in iOS 7 was flawed, it only got better in iOS8.

the iPhone 4 does have voice recognition capabilities in fact, even the previous generations of the iPod Touch has this but was very well undermined because of the limited functions it can perform but it was in the development stage. Apple knew it could go somewhere back then but didn't know it could go thus far.

But nonetheless, i really hope MS really takes good care of the Nokia brand because I really want to go back to them.

I feel you man. I'm stuck with WP7.8 for a long time. Even worse, they killed skype on WP7.8. Promised this and that but at the end this is what we get. I don't think I will go for WP (or whatever they call it) again.

even lumia 520 also get cortana, what im trying to say is, Microsoft is aware of that wp7 case
and now they are trying to support even the lowest end device as longer as possible to regain customer faith

I missed my lumia 800, it's one of the best phone made by Nokia
I still own the device now, but not using it much
Skype on wp7.8 is quite pointless from my point of view
because a lot of wp7 device don't have front camera, I know lumia 900 had it
after wp8 is released and more users abandoned wp7, the amount of users using a wp7 lumia 900 is really small

and for wp now, it's better, and Microsoft learnt a lesson from wp7 case.
that's why im still considering to get a lumia 520 (maybe a used one) as secondary phone. because even the first gen wp8 lowest end model still get update to the latest one.

I know how little users are on WP7, I don't need update/support to skype, I just want it to work as it did before.
MS learnt a lesson? They killed skype on WP7 just a couple of months ago.

I've always used Nokia before Samsung stepped up to the game and the emergence of the underdog, Apple. I was on my N78 before i made the switch to my first ever smartphone, the Lumia 800 and i vowed that i will use it for a long time but then the termination support notice came and well, let's just say it all went down hill.

Maybe it wouldn't affect me "that bad" if it wasn't my first experience with a smartphone but like the say "first cut is the deepest". I'm now on the 5S and so far, it hasn't failed me.

I wouldn't give it the ultimatum to boycott it forever. If MS decided to put effort into its smartphone lineup, i will definitely go back. the likes of Android and iOS bores me. On a side note, the METRO UI is really really appealing (at least to me).

if in indeed MS is trying to make amends for its past, i applaud them but putting everything into something is not going to make things better, in fact, it could have adverse effect. unless such feature is optimized for that particular device, the user experience may result in negative feedback. Sure, it may look impressive for a low end phone to b epacked with features otherwise only available to high end but MS should thread carefully else it will back fire.

I think that is a strategy to force users out from wp7
