Hi... Need some recommendation here...

1. Preferred Brand: No preference
2. Budget: Ideally less than 3k
3. Usage: Web browsing, music, movie, projects mainly documents
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14" and below
5. Processor: 4th Gen, ideally i5

Also to add, I hope to get one with touch ability to utilise Windows 8.1 and a detachable battery... And I really would like to find a convertible if possible, lighter if need to bring out as can bring just the tablet part.

I have some models in mind, hope sifus can give some feedback

1. Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series
2. Lenovo Flex-14
3. Lenovo Miix 2 11 inch
4. Lenovo Yoga 2 13 inch / Yoga 2 Pro

What about other convertibles such as Asus Transformer or Sony Vaio Tab?

As I am quite particular about weight issues, I'm considering MBA too as I know it is really light and slim... But does MBA come pre-installed with Office, or do we need a separate purchase?

Recommendations please? Thanks a lot!

Don't every buy DELL laptops!

I have been using DELL computers and laptops for more than 10 years, I know what I am talking about.

DELL laptops will conk out just after the warranty period.  If you still insist on buying DELL desktops or laptops, pay more for longer warranty period and pray for the best.

my personal experience vostro / inspiron 2008-2013 era deems to have problems... gave up recommending these lineup nowadays...

latitude / precision seems have better durability.... my company purchase 10 lat and 1 precision within 2013-now.. seems no hardware problem yet...

Thank you so much bro for your recommendations...  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

For the updates, I already bought Macbook Pro Retina Display on 31st July.. To be honest, I'm quite scared first to use Mac since I never use a Mac before.. sweat.gif I've been loyal Windows user for 20 years.. But this year, my works need to do lots of photography editing, so I followed your advice and get a Macbook.. It is so good in doing photography editing, the color reproductions also is very good and the OS is very snappy compared to Windows (not trying to be a fanboys).. I love its trackpad and keyboard so much.. No wonder Macbook's price is higher than some Windows laptop because of quality.. You got for what you pay for..  laugh.gif

Anyway, thank you so much.. Keep the hardwork in this recommendations thread.. icon_rolleyes.gif

Not sure whether the batteries are detachable, but I think the Miix 2 and especially the Yoga 2 13 are worth considering for your case nod.gif
Microsoft Office (full) is in general, not included in whichever notebook you buy, have to purchase separately.. but if you are student or staff at Learning INstitutes, you should be able to get them for free nod.gif

I personally am not confident with Asus Malaysia's warranty support, and I'm don't have details on the latest Sony products (one minute they are not selling anymore, then last I heard they are selling again rclxub.gif )

Hi Guys,

I need some recommendations for a budget laptop.
1. Preferred Brand - None (as long as there is good warranty coverage & decent after sales service)
2. Budget - 1.5k ~ 1.8k
3. Usage - Portability is of utmost importance as my work requires me to move around.
- mainly used for excel work, watching movies, internet browsing
- I tend to multi task n run many programs at once (skype, excel, itunes & chrome with many many tabs). Would an i3 CPU suffice or do I need to get an i5?
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14 inches.

Other requirements
1. Windows pre-installed
2. Decent speakers
3. At least 8gb ram
4. Good screen for video playback (1080p support)
5. Dedicated media buttons (play/pause/next) preferred.

*Touch screen is not a must but would be a plus to have.
*Dedicated GPU not required as I have a desktop for gaming.

Please provide multiple laptop recommendations of varying brands if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Yeah, you will need RM3-4k for a notebook with decent built, speakers, (especially the) screen etc. haha

Anyway, can try these:
14"
Dell Inspiron 14 3000, i3-4030U + Nvidia 820M@RM1549[2.2kg], 4GB, 500GB, Linux, 4-cell, spill-resistant KB, 2 years Pro support; W8.1SL@RM1699

Lenovo Ideapad Flex 2-14, i3-4030U + Intel HD4400 +(1366x768; touch) + 8GB SSHD + 500GB HDD@RM1699[2kg], 4GB, W8, 2 yrs; color: black

*Please check out the real thing to decide whether they are okay to you or not icon_rolleyes.gif The screens are standard ones (only) nod.gif

I see. Well atleast i have u guys to educate me.

What are the options from asus or acer? Seems like acer is no longer the popular choice. My last laptop was an acer which died after 4plus years of usage.

Acer is still popular, just that I might not have the most recent pricelists laugh.gif
Asus, on the other hand is much hated by those who know just how terrible their after sales service is in Malaysia laugh.gif

Acer E1-472G-54204G1Tk, i5-4200U + Nvidia 820M@RM1899, 4GB, 1TB, W8.1; 3 years local warranty upgrade@RM50

Thanks for your prompt reply. Are there any shops in lowyat that you would recommend? There are so many laptop shops in lowyat, I don't want to waste so much time hunting for the best bargain.
