cant agree with you more.. I have known of 2 issues of damage Iphone due to charger.. one unit was a total write off and the other the USB module need to be replace.. Lucky, for the owners, phone submodules are cheap and so is the service cost.. I will not say the same for camera.. as we can see in earlier posting  RM40 just to looksee and 700 to replace mother board ...  Also the Sony Mircro USB is not just USB as is. it is a highbreed and on its reverse side there are numerous micro pins. 10 if not wrong that is use for wired remote control for the camera.. I will not want to stuff up that connector just because of charging via battery is OK..

More important for me -  is the charge time  .. it just take too long to charge via USB.  My usual day outing will run down 2-3 battery when I am on happy shooting spree days.. it take a good 2-3 hours to charge each cell.. and it will be more than twice that time via USB...  no I want my contiguous sleep every night and not wake up to babysit the battery charger.  When travelling in remote and 3rd world country where power source could come from back garden generators.. I will not want to predict the consequence. Cheaper to stuff my charger than the camera ..

it is better to be safe than to be too depend on technology to provide the safe buffer.  I have been an electronics engineer for over 30 years and never a day do I trust Murphy..

I have one original external charger fron NEX5N + one OEM from China. Both unit served my purpose.. One advantage the OEM unit has is , it can run off 12V car.. that gives me options.. but I know there are now units that can run off 5V so power banks will give better flexibility.. but I will not charge direct tro the camera USB..

I can easily ring an up or down voltage converter so my variables are still there.. an advantage of being in the trade.

wah advantages of being an electrical engineer indeed.

I only learnt physics up to a levels, so I'm not too sure about this: should I be looking out for voltage or amp's if I want to use my power bank to charge my a7 directly via USB?

Any OEM chargers to recommend that will not kill the battery?

If it really hits RM1.5k... I'll buy one and sell another out so I can get some profit from the difference in price biggrin.gif Get to keep the half case also tongue.gif

biggrin.gif Not sure but I always have at least one of my two batteries full so I normally just plug in and let it charge overnight just like what I do with my phones.

Anyway next time if an external charger is on discount I might as well grab one.

biggrin.gif Also EE background here but just fresh, not 30 years like him.

But so far my experience tells me that... Electronics components can be really robust. I don't really care much about them because with my usage, every gadget I have until now survives nicely.

Anyway... Which one is the charger that takes USB input arh? I'm interested in that biggrin.gif As I can then charge the battery on-the-go with my powerbank.

Seriously sony should've made the camera usable while charging. Even my RM300 P&S does that sad.gif

the limitation is in the USB controls circuit inside the camera.. it has to convert your 5V from usb to a higher voltage to charge the battery.. no matter how big a current you provide, only that much can go tro the circuit.. but do lah apply 5V 200A from you computer PSU ! and increase the risk toasting your camera..

USB only allow 5V... and there is no way out.. anything bigger even if you force it across will be total disaster inside the camera.

Components may be bit reliable in some ways these days but power generation is still very traditional and they are the main source of stress on the components due to source fluctuations. In the old days, I hardly had see any CPU toasting but is a common issue these days.. overheating is the cause .. so I will not say they are more reliable..

Btw via the high breed USB remote connector. . all you need is to short some of the pins and you can directly trigger autofocs and shoot. Great if you want to make your on time lapse black box.

A little off topic but I wonder why are our camera batteries so small in capacity yet quite big in size in comparison with smartphone batteries which have more mAh yet more compact? Sorry if this sounds silly but I am very curious about this.
