QUOTE(cineis @ Aug 18 2016, 02:09 AM)
Hi, everyone

Wanna check with those familiar with the high traffic jam times of Bangkok. I have to stopover one night in the city in October. I'd like to know:

1. If I leave Suvarnabhumi by taxi at around 4-5 pm and we use the tolls, will the traffic be very bad? How long do you think until I can reach BTS Ploenchit? I heard the expressway is right by it but I don't know this area so I don't really know what that means lol. But I was told it would be one simple turn in and I won't get stuck in a bad Sukhumvit jam?

2. More important is the next day when I've to go back to Suvarnabhumi to make my flight. Boarding should be at about 7 pm so I plan to check in by 4 pm. Is this too tight? What time should I leave from Ploenchit? How bad will the traffic jam be if we take the tolls again?

I was considering trying the Airport Rail Link but with too many luggages and older people with me, the taxi is the only real option. So, hope you can help me plan the timing.

I've been reading a lot about the taxis and every site tells me to make sure they agree to turn the meter on before we get in. If they don't want to, move on to the next cab. Hope this tip can save us from the scammers. I'm already stressing about how I'm going to get a cooperative cabbie for the ride back to the airport.  grumble.gif

1. There is no other way unless you can travel by airport link, if rain then more jam, my guess is within 2 hours if no rain, normally jam also at the city ekspress way rarely jam.

2 4pm sounds okay for me,i normally also leave 3 hours advance biggrin.gif Somemore I stay at pratunam area, more traffic tongue.gif

You can always take uber at bangkok, especially to airport or leave airport.

these condos have a few disadvantage
1. they're near MRT station, most attractions are near BTS...so u have to travel to exchange station to change to BTS....which will waste time
2. airbnb in thai is like 50/50...especially condos where u share the place with other ppl within the same buildings...they can cancel anytime
i saw many cheap airbnb in bangkok but most of them are outside of city center(near MRT) and its a condos...so i end up didn't stay those place
*
So far, i have been travelling up to BKK every 3 weeks and been staying in AirBnB most of the trip. Ya, they do shared the places with other owner in the condo but at least, it's more quieter compare to staying in hotel/hostel which shared with other tourist. Esp. if you stay in a hotel full of China Tourist!! Worst...

Did the host 'always' can cancel the booking?? So far, i never experience this before, coz as far as i know (i chat with of the host before), they told me, if the host cancel the guest from booking, they will get penalty from AirBNB and in more frequent time, AirBnB will even banned them from hosting anymore in near future. So, i think this will not so likely happen for those SuperHost in AirBnB. Maybe the one u mention is not Super Host.

MRT change to BTS? Nah.. it's totally fine with me when i travel to Bangkok. I always take own sweet time to travel. Sometimes bike, sometime taxis, sometime, Grab or Uber... and sometimes.. even i take bus to see the local life! smile.gif

Perhaps, it's time to re-think of terms of HOLIDAY... it's no longer require to stay in hotel... coz we couldnt try/see the locals life.

Cheers wink.gif

1. yes, host always can cancel the booking
due to recent complaints from condos owner abt having foreigners come in and out of the building...many host are forced to cancel
and yes airbnb side will have penalty and bad review but what choice would they have
there are many superhost at japan side that totally cancel ALL their lisitings
i still have those user's link but when open their profile, they're no longer offering airbnb anymore
same reason, due to the recent complaints from the building's other owners

u travel to BKK every 3 week...of course u can take your own sweet time, but for us that maybe once a year...time is money
less time travelling on train, more time spent on exploring

i personally stayed at a standalone building airbnb at ratchatewi station...near to shopping center of both side...walk also can

Glur Hostel and Coffee Bar is a pretty decent place to stay. 3 minutes to BTS and near the pier. Very centralised where you have street food and massages too

Depends on yourself really. If casual shopping and eating, it's enough.

I've spent >20k baht over 4D3N also got. Food isn't expensive.
