Report: Germany Halts Army Rifle Orders Over Accuracy Fears
22 June 2014 Sunday | 11:55AM BERLIN — Germany’s defense ministry has temporarily halted new orders of its military’s standard assault rifle while it probes complaints the weapon doesn’t shoot straight, a news report said Sunday. German troops in Afghanistan in recent years voiced concerns over the G36 automatic rifle made by Heckler & Koch, saying it became inaccurate when its barrel heated up in prolonged firefights. The military initially blamed the use of unsuitable munitions, but the government auditing body the Bundesrechnungshof has now ordered a new investigation, reported the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. “It is important to avoid that the defense ministry invests up to €34 million ($46 million) in a rifle that may not meet the requirements of the troops,” the court was quoted as saying by the newspaper. The new investigation into the accuracy of the rifle involves Germany’s federal criminal police, ammunition makers and ballistics experts at a scientific institute, the report said. http://www.defensenews.com/article/2014062...ssey=nav%7Chead |

QUOTE Malaysia to deploy naval mothership off Sabah to stop kidnappings Dzirhan Mahadzir, Kuala Lumpur - IHS Jane's Navy International 22 June 2014 ![]() RMN naval auxiliary Bunga Mas Lima, seen here with next-generation patrol vessel KD Perak in the Strait of Malacca, is to be deployed as a mothership off Sabah as the government tries to stop kidnappings by Philippines-based groups. Source: Royal Malaysian Navy The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) is deploying the naval support ship Bunga Mas Lima (pennant number 5) off the east coast of the Malaysian state of Sabah to act as a sea base. The deployment is in line with an overall strategy by Malaysia to combat kidnappings by groups based in the Philippines. Bunga Mas Lima will act as a mothership for RMN Combatboat 90 (CB 90) fast attack craft and Malaysian Army fast boats, allowing them to reduce their response and interception time in relation to any incursions into Eastern Sabah. Bunga Mas Lima will also carry an RMN AS550 Fennec helicopter to conduct patrols and interceptions. Operations on and from the ship will occur under the aegis of RMN COMNAV II, the region's naval command based at RMN Sepanggar at Kota Kinabalu, rather than under the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM), the civilian lead security structure tasked with implementing security operations in Sabah. ESSCOM has come under heavy criticism from various quarters in Malaysia over its inability to prevent several kidnappings. Bunga Mas Lima and sister ship Bunga Mas Enam (6), both belonging to the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation (MISC), had been tasked with RMN counter-piracy escort missions of MISC ships transiting the Gulf of Aden. However, with the decline of piracy in that area and MISC's preference for onboard security teams for its merchant ships, the mission - known as Operation 'Fajar' - has been concluded. Both ships would have reverted back to MISC, but the company has agreed for the ships to continue operating with the RMN. Bunga Mas Enam is in Perth serving as a command and co-ordination centre for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 international search effort. Depending on the situation in question, RMN plans call for Bunga Mas Enam to also serve as a sea base either in addition to or in rotation with Bunga Mas Lima . However, the use of the ships is only an interim solution. The Malaysian defence ministry plans to procure disused oil rigs that would then be refitted, equipped, and positioned off Eastern Sabah to serve as sea bases, although the conversion process is expected to take several months. Once the oil rigs are fully operational, the defence ministry will assess whether the naval ships will continue to serve as sea bases, be re-tasked to other missions, or revert back to MISC ownership. source |

Eight other warships from the Royal Brunei Navy, China's People’s Liberation Army (Navy) and United States Navy participated in the group sail.
The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) took part in a multinational group sail from Guam to Hawaii. ![]() ![]() ![]() It said on Tuesday (June 24) that a Formidable-class stealth frigate - the RSS Intrepid with an embarked S-70B Seahawk naval helicopter - took part in the exercise. Eight other warships – from the Royal Brunei Navy, China's People’s Liberation Army (Navy) and United States Navy – participated in the group sail, which started on June 14 and ended on Tuesday. During the sail, the navies conducted various naval warfare serials such as manoeuvring exercises and gunnery firings. The ships will also participate in the US-hosted multilateral Rim of the Pacific naval exercise off the coast of Hawaii starting Thursday until Aug 1. Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Beng, the Commanding Officer of RSS Intrepid, said the group sail had reinforced the relationships among the four navies. “This sailing has been a good chance for us to exercise with partner navies from Brunei, China and the United States. The interactions at sea have also strengthened mutual trust and understanding between personnel from the different navies,” he said. - CNA/cy |

German Eurofighter and Learjet collide - one confirmed dead
![]() The Learjet aircraft parts were strewn over a wide area QUOTE A military-chartered Learjet plane has crashed in western Germany after a mid-air collision with a German air force Eurofighter jet. The Learjet came down in woodland near the town of Olsberg, killing one person and leaving another feared dead. The Eurofighter returned safely to its base near Cologne. The incident happened during an exercise with another Eurofighter, German media say. Die Welt news website said the Learjet was also taking part in the exercise. Firefighters have found wreckage of the Learjet, with the remains of one person nearby. ![]() QUOTE Witnesses quoted by the German broadcaster WDR say parts of the Learjet came down just 80m (264ft) from a block of flats. Olsberg lies in the Ruhr Valley, in North-Rhine Westphalia state. The Eurofighter involved in the collision was badly damaged but landed safely. The Bild daily quoted Air Force Col Andreas Hoppe as saying the pilots had performed a remarkable feat in bringing the plane back. 2014 RIMPAC
China sends second largest fleet to RIMPAC 25 June 2014 Wednesday | 02:51 BJT 23 countries will take part in the Pacific-rim naval drill this year. The United States has sent the biggest contingent, followed by China. The Chinese deployment includes a guided missile destroyer, a guided missile escort ship, a multi-purpose supply ship and a hospital ship. China’s Peace Ark is the first hospital ship to take part in RIMPAC. The multinational fleet has carried out several training exercises on its way to Guam, including firing, emergency response and resupplying. This is China’s first time at the world’s largest international maritime exercise. Expert say China will also join exercises against non-traditional security threats. "Non-traditional security threats are common threats faced by all countries. The threats cannot be solved by any single country. That’s why I believe China’s participation will help maintain regional and world peace and stability. China has sent four ships, all representing China’s best combat capability at this time. It shows the Chinese navy is confident and open to international cooperation. Currently there are some frictions between China and the US on issues like cyber security, the South China Sea and the East China Sea. Despite that, the Chinese navy accepted the invitation to Pacific-rim drill because it’s quite natural for us to have disagreements and frictions. China and the US have different political and social systems, different cultural backgrounds, and different development paths. The key is that both of us should view and manage these conflicts properly. Only communication and cooperation will bring us closer and provide opportunities to resolve problems," said senior captain Zhang Junshe, vice president of Naval Research Institute. http://english.cntv.cn/2014/06/25/VIDE1403635798197215.shtml |
