QUOTE(dinkydong @ May 16 2014, 11:36 AM)
1. Download the latest International firmware (ending with WW) for your respective Zenfone 5 model. Eg: TOOF_WW is for 2Ghz 2GB and TOOJ_WW is for the 1.6Ghz 1GB model.
2. Take note the date of existing firmware in the phone (Settings->About->Software Information). Eg: 20140430 for V0430 firmware.
3. Extract the -user.zip file from the downloaded _user.zip file.
4. Rename the -user.zip file to UL-ASUS_T00F-CN-yyyy.mm.dd.65432-user.zip where yyyy.mm.dd is any date newer than the existing firmware. If yours is an original Taiwan firmware, replace CN with TW. 65432 is just an arbitrary no, u can use 12345 instead.
5. Connect phone to PC. Copy the renamed -user.zip file to the root directory of the phone's Internal Storage.
6. Disconnect phone from PC.
7. There's an exclamation mark notification on the notification panel. Pull down and click to update.
8. Firmware update complete.

that is not just a firmware update, its to change our ZF5 firmware from taiwan version to international version

but other than some changes in the apps, is it really better? i mean does it fix all the current issues of the ZF5?

Nope, this manual update to international WW ROM is mainly for China models. The reason being China Asus Zenfone has no Google service support => No Google Play Store, Gmail, GSync, etc. Manually installing Google Play Store.apk is also useless as the app cannot even run! In addition, u will also get tons of chinese bloat wares pre-installed into the phone, constantly spamming u with notifications on the notification bar.

As such, the only way around this is to flash it with the WW ROM.

My only quip with this model is the lack of a notification LED. There's a LED on the top right but it only functions as a charging LED.
*
I'm not sure if it's a combination of what I did, but I've used the "Notification Light Widget by Motorola for the Moto G problem, and then used Light Manager - LED Set to customise the LED notifications. Works fine on mine as initially mine is same as yours, LED only lights up during charging. Downside is that there's only 3 colours with the Asus, red/orange/green. Not much customisation can be done.

QUOTE(dinkydong @ May 16 2014, 08:59 AM)
What issue is that? The only issue i've encountered with V0430 firmware is that the double tapping of the volume button sometimes do not bring up the camera app from standby.
*
I'm not sure how it works before that, since I just updated immediately after getting the phone, but, for me, double tapping volume button then press the "on" button it'll go into camera app from lockscreen. Pretty useful for me since I'm using screen lock pattern and the camera app shortcut on the lock screen wouldn't function.

On a side note, I'm just curious what are the pre-installed apps on the WW version. There's a couple of apps I would wished I could at least disable on the TW ROM.

Thanks a zillion bro!!! My notification LED is working now!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif rclxms.gif
We should post this on the Asus TW forum to spare more innocent victims from doing a soft reset for nothing!

Though the blink is a little dim (i'm spoiled by my Xperia ZL), still its better than a non functioning LED!

With regards to the double tap to call up the camera, its supposed to double tap on the volume rocker and the camera screen will turn on automatically without having to touch the standby/power button.

Yeah.. The notification LED is barely noticeable, well, I come from a phone without the LED, so, anything is god sent, though I'm spoilt by the huge multi-coloured one I see on my Mum's Note 2.

As for the double tap, now that you mentioned, I remember that when I first enabled that function, it works like you mentioned, double tap and it comes up, but only that 1 instance, after that seemed to have to press the "on" button after double tapping. Well, anything works for me since if that function is not available, I would have to unlock my phone only I can access the camera anyway. With this function, at least it's still one step less.

Another "tip" I find out, not sure if it works for you guys, is to fully charge the phone to 100%, use it as per normally, intentionally leave it to run down the battery down to 0%(automatically shutting down) without any charging in between and then charge it to 100% without unplugging at all.

Battery meter works more accurately after that. I did this "cycle charge" twice on mine. It doesn't seem to make it last longer, but battery meter is more accurate.

According to GRexer, his phone's SIM 1 slot is NOT spring loaded, only the 2nd slot is

However, for mine both slots are spring loaded just like the microSD slot.

anyone else having the same issue as GRexer? he suspects the 1st slot is broken/faulty

Someone in China helped me to buy the phone and forward it to me. U can actually buy it direct from Taobao since they provide forwarding services. Just take note that China Post, DHL, etc. Will not ship the phone. New regulations prohibits shipping any device with a lithium ion battery ..even if it's built in and non removable.

As for the difference with Taiwan's ZF5, I think Taiwan's ROM supports Google services. Don't quote me on that, u will have to verify with those using Taiwan's ZF5.

Likewise for mine...both slots spring loaded.

Frankly..it's not such a big deal unless u are frequently changing SIM cards.
