Come join us & share why you like to go Mr. DIY even though you have nothing to bai. What you bought recently in Mr. DIY & what products you recommend in Mr.DIY.

user posted image

I bought a few Fire Extinguisher, price quite cheap rm15-20 only, outside sell at least rm50-60 for small cans, but very laku always sold out.

I also bought a cheap USB fan to blow my external HDD when doing big transfers, can fold flat somemore, but abit noisy, but rm5.

I also bought some small mirrors for rm2.50, quite handy for underskirt views.

I also bought a compass.

Then i bought the hot glue refill after buying the glue gun from Daiso.

I also bought a double sided screwdriver.

The round batteries also worth it whole strip for under rm5.

Also bought a big Tote bag for rm6.50.

Basically if you looking for sub rm5 small items Mr. DIY is the place.

I say overall their quality is pretty much China quality, but small kids want to buy things with cute cartoons printed on them got many things, their books, mirrors, bags all have cute cartoon animals, quality & printing quite good also. can beat Parkson stationary quality. I bought a incar power port expansion 3+1USB for rm5.50, dunno how good it's super cheap.

daiso can undercut market because they want volume, different strategy from acehardware. mrdiy is following normal retail strategy, import then rebrand to own brand, place next to big name product, but margin is much higher than big name brand

i dunno lol, but realistically its about the same unless you abuse it. like switching it on off on off in a few seconds. philips should last longer in that sense because of rigorous quality control by years of experience. but if you pakai baik baik jaga baik baik they should be the same.

btw i recently changed all bulbs to Qusun LED, 9watt only and in theory should last a lot longer than standard bulb. best part is little or no heat, i turn on for 5 minutes then pegang bulb stand also cool, no panas. very bright too, replaced old philips energy saving bulbs of 20w

ace memang overprice max. lets say identical product, philips 11w warm light E27, average costing in market is RM8.40, normal hardware shop will sell about RM12.90, mrdiy should be RM14.90, and acehardware will go up to RM21.90 or so. rough estimation la, not exact quote. acehardware goes for big margin, mrdiy goes for a balance of volume/margin, and daiso just want to win by volume so everything fix price

but last year I've bought about 10 mops from them. those twisty type for slight less than RM10/piece. market price RM25 cheapest
yes, i'm a clean freak, change new mop every 2-3 months.

the down side about them is that when a particular item is sold out, it might never be restocked ever again. like the RM10 mop

oops, correction, i'm using mitre saw saw too

mostly PVC pipes, the blade is helluva expensive, about rm400 for a re-cut piece
can't use conventional wood saw blade on pvc pipes. it'll shatter the pipe

I bought a incar power port expansion 3+1USB for rm5.50, dunno how good it's super cheap.

if color is not a matter to you, i'd go for the white sealant. so far no problem. the place that you want to seal has to be dry before applying the sealant.

Hi Members,

I'm looking for some cheap stainless steel stop cock, need 12 of them...due to budget, I can't b bothered with buying branded stop cocks as it easily costs more than RM50 each, furthermore, stop cock is rarely turned...does Mr. D.I.Y. sells any stop cock that costs lesses than RM30?
If not, does Members here know where I can get cheap unbranded stop cock?
thanks...

I also brought few lego bootlegs and the price is very cheap if compare to tabao from china.
For example I brought 1 is RM30 in DIY then i check at china tabao is selling RMB60 which after convert is almost the same and you can save the shipping fee and waiting time.
Austini quality is quite good but I never brought a official Lego so cannot do much compare.

the most common thing a screwdriver can go bad is the head size is not accurate so when you turn you end up drilling the screw, happened to one set of my screwdrivers not bought from Mr.DIY, i think it's more than rm5.

So I bought a Mr DIY LED Light bulb 3W E14 at RM11.90.

Actually I was looking for a lower watt but couldn't find.

We'll see how well / long it last.

Good question. For RM10++, I think it would be affordable for you (thesun) to just test one unit.

It is a foam type, not abc powder.
Abc powder more powerful,
This foam type useful for small fire only..

I dont expect this foam type to fight godlike fire, i treat it more like a bottle of water in a can that u keep in car.
Obviously if u dont carry anything that able to suppress fire, the fire will become bigger.

But if i have a immmediate fire suppressiom unit, i can prevent it from become bigger or in the mean time look for help.

Thanks bro!

Finally found it at AD. You are right, there's only a few left. The store is small compare to the Tesco Extra Shah Alam branch.

The instruction sheet could be better. It should have said required 200-240V or something similar. I was so worried when plugging it into the wall socket.

Not very good with plants actually. Luckyly I have a friend who is crazy about gardening, I know only to water the plants and maybe put fertilizer.
But it is indeed very nice to see plants at the balcony (however travelling is a bitch since nobody can water the plants)

The DIY Brand Spray Paint sucks. It's cheap rm5.99, but i bought the White color, the paint is so thin after 4-5 layers of spray on Red object it still looks pink.

Also the paint is so thin that any micro scratch will still show up after a thick spray because the paint is so diluted it's just thinner.

If you looking for really thin coat this is good, otherwise buy other brands.

Many MR. DIY chains hired foreign workers nowadays.

None of them speak english sweat.gif

Tips for me: If i want to buy something over rm5 in Mr.DIY, I'll make sure to check with Daiso if the item is available so i save more.

I wouldn't recommend kids toys that are too cheap, mainly because they probably used low quality, recycled or hazardous materials, or leaded paint, especially for toddlers where they would bite anything. for younger children, make sure they wash their hands after playing with them. Even those in Daiso i don't recommend because Daiso had case of recalls on their toys in Singapore. For baby toys best buy from reputable brands since babies have weaker immune system.

Even EXPENSIVE toys can do harm to children, its about how u manage ur child lifestyle. Don't judge the toys by its price tags! That's my concern n my opinion. #PeaceNoWar

i'm talking about the cheap material & paint used on cheap toys, they don't have any certification from safety boards. no matter how you manage your kids lifestyle it won't prevent lead paints being picked up by their hands, unless your kids don't play with toys.

those are weather seal, mainly for house windows & doors, Daiso got sell longer stripes for rm5.30, if want better quality suggest go Ace Hardware price is x5 more. i haven't tried the ones i got from Daiso so can't see if there's big difference, but if you want to use on car, suggest quality ones because door keep open close will put lots of stress on the stripes and the heat from sun will cause the tape to come loose easier.

Thanks for the suggestion but I use that to fill in minor gap to prevent from rattling sound in the car (i.e: dashboard, A panel and etc).

Which this, I might give Daiso a try if I need more as I've already bought from Mr DIY this evening for RM 19.90. doh.gif

Ive bought mr diy non rechargeable AA battery for my daughter lantern last year. within seconds the battery grew so hot, i can't even hold the handle. (battery is placed inside handle of lantern). Good thing i was quick enough to uncap the batteries. it was leaking badly.
lucky i tested the lantern first before passing it my my daughter.

other batteries like CR3032 don't last

but LR44 button batteries seems to be ok though. using it on digital calipers

Mr.DIY brand rectangular battery (black/gold) seems ok. i use on Smart Tag can last much longer than Everyday or Energizer. But more expensive than cheaper brands. For AA/AAA usually go for Tesco or Daiso Brand (x10 for rm5.30). Only button batteries get from DIY because cheapest.

those rechargable battery are very weak, fake capacity and can't last long

if want cheap and promising quality, get GP rechargeable

if dont mind paying more just for your shaver...
go for panasonic eneloop 4th generation, got two version, one is made in japan, the other one made in china,
the one selling in most local retailers like aeon big, tesco, are made in china, the old batch stock selling in US are made in japan, but all latest batch now are made in china ady.

Sony Cycle Energy uses similar tech as Eneloop. I don't know any difference between Sanyo Eneloop & Panasonic Eneloop other than got Lite version.

Local Eneloop are super expensive in Malaysia. Buy from Singapore can save alot.

For the Charger go for branded ones that has quick charge + normal Charge + auto cut.

Conventional Rechargeable not worth getting even cheaper because they are inefficient.

Not Sony, its Sanyo, panasonic bought sanyo eneloop division and technology and rebrand it as panasonic eneloop on their 4th generation eneloop, other than branding, the main difference is on the increased charge cycle on the latest generation.

Yes, local one expensive about 40% and made in china

Charger, get smart charger with individual charging bay, 1 LED per cell instead of 2 cells per 1 LED
if possible avoid quick-charge charger to preserve your battery lifespan.

No, Sony also has their own recyclable rechargeable batteries like Sanyo, GP also have, Cycle Energy they call it, all use NiMH (same as laptop batteries) instead of Lithium ion.

I use Sanyo Charger but not the one from Eneloop pack, i had to buy the Lithium Ion + Charger pack to get that charger it has:
4 slot (2 AAA/AA, 2 AA Quick Charge)
individual lights
refresh button + light

Quick Charge only activates when you put the batteries on the quick charge AA slots, it will be disabled when you put more than 2 batteries on the charger.

downside is can only charge 2 AAA 1 time.

I want to replace my standard (conventional non LED) T8 tube light with a new Mr DIY LED T8 tube light.

If not mistaken, I need to remove the components inside (i.e. Starter , choke , etc) and rewire to directly connect to the LED tube.

Anyone with experience can confirm ?

So far, the goods are definitely well worth the money.

Hand phone stand
Hand phone holder in car (stick to dashboard)
Ninja Wallet
Rear view mirror for car

All still working in good condition since the day I bought it and the prices are crazy cheap for that kind of quality.

if you are using normal long 40w/20w fluorescent light, then just remove the whole set and hook up wire from home to T8 LED using connector
but T8 LED the wiring come out from side of lamp. unless u want to hack it and drill a hole in the middle and modified the wiring.

looking at how fast they expand i think they follow Daiso business method, some self operate some franchise out. don't think they have the financial capability to open 1 outlet in every 3 new malls up.

might be wrong though.

right now there is nobody to match Mr.DIY, but who knows, it only takes 1 big China company to enter to crush DIY.

*
I try to stay away from DIY batteries (those gold and black ones) as they tend to leak.

For AA/AAA, I think nothing beats the ones sold at IKEA. Cheaper and more reliable.

FIXMAN branded tools are quite decent. I had assembled quite a substantial set over the years for automotive DIY and they have not failed. It would have cost me a fortune if I had bought branded automotive tools.

i got use the DIY rectangular batteries coz not many option. not cheap also.

but for AA/AAA, i find Daiso plastic wrapped ones more worth it, you get 10 batteries i think. i notice Daiso batteries got longest expiry date, now buy can go up to 2013. i stock them for emergency.

Tesco is cheap but only 4 per packs and cost more than Daiso plastic wrap packs.

looking at how fast they expand i think they follow Daiso business method, some self operate some franchise out. don't think they have the financial capability to open 1 outlet in every 3 new malls up.

might be wrong though.

right now there is nobody to match Mr.DIY, but who knows, it only takes 1 big China company to enter to crush DIY.

contractors still prefer go hardware shops, coz DIY quality can be questionable when it comes to heavy duties, and the shopkeepers knows the basic stuff, but not good enough.

DIY, like it's brand, is good for DIY purpose.

in the end, which shop cheaper & can offer required item gets the deal.

thing is these things, sometimes the size is like 0.01mm different making the fitting loose on the screw and end up damaging the head.

i bought a screw from DIY, it's very good, american flag design handle, and you can pull the head out invert it to change from - to + head, but they no longer sell it, they sell the same handle screw, but cannot be swapped.

bought another fixed head screw from them, the fit seems not as good as the one i bought.

the brand never see, but i've seen marker pen like touch up paint in DIY near their counter. i got the white paint not really good. i think bottled paint with paint brush still best method for touching up as you can thin the paint with paint thinner to make it easier to apply. usually rm10 per bottle only.

their recent cny deco stuffs quality/design is really good. the price is okay too.

also i realized that the things they sell differs from one shop to another. if you cant find the stuff u nid probably can go another shop to see.

ps: bought AAA 4 batteries today @rm3.90 not diy brand but another one. Energizer brand priced times 3.

if you go to bigger branch they have most things available in other branches.

so far the most complete one i've seen is Jaya Shopping Mall but it doesn't carry as much toys compared to Indah Parade branch (which has a dedicated shoplot size area for it).

Indah Parade looks like is the biggest but their hardware tool is somewhat lacking, more on home stuff like tupperware, woks etc.

Some just simply sold out never restock.

depends what you are looking at. Sg Wang branch is considered medium size. if you looking for spray paints they don't carry as much as other branches.

usually if you looking for spannar, tupperware & other small stuffs most branches have them.

if you want IT, paint stuffs some branches have less.

also notice that most branches don't carry much flammable liquid like thinner, mineral spirits.

should be original. just like their philip light bulbs are cheaper than outside selling (but still not as cheap if you go to light distributor shop).

i tried their DIY Black/Gold 9V, they are OK. usually i go Daiso & Tesco because they are cheaper. But Daiso got 4 brands of AA, the Green One is not strong enough for power usage (RC/Tamiya car). The Chrome ones are good. The Black one (plastic wrapper) i think so so (same price but bundled in 8-10 you don't expect much). The White one are new so don't know.

for button batteries DIY is more worth it but now i cannot find the 2032 in set of 8-10 strips anymore. Daiso usually carry branded buttons like Mitsubishi.

alternatively you can go Super Save they also sell many batteries esp button batteries but more China brand.

Tesco battery also good & value.

also they start to have their own brands of products even spray paint got, so they probably want to sell more of those. quality wise i cannot tell as i haven't buy their in house brand items yet.

but last time got a 2 in 1 screwdriver where you can pull out the head and reverse it to switch between + & - now no more. quite good that screwdriver.

they also sell a measuring tape that automatic holds on when you pull it out, only when you want to retract it you press the button to release. i think much user friendly than those then need to manually lock. but durability wise not sure.

All 3 may look like they sell same stuff but actual they cater quite different market. sure there are overlapping products, but it's your choice you want cheap or quality.

ACE sells mostly imported stuffs, branded stuffs, they also sell cheap rm5 stuffs found in Parkson but they focus more on hardware stuff, though still if many items need to go to Lokam shop to find. It's still not considered a hardcore hardware shop.

Daiso sells more on small home stuffs. rm5.90 some things consider cheaper some consider more expensive. there isn't much hardware stuff there so Daiso has their own market.

Mr.DIY is like combination of ACE & Daiso but at low cost scale. their hardware are cheaper than ACE but quality is also lower but still can use. Home stuff price maybe cheaper than Daiso but quality also not as good as Daiso.

So it's good that a mall have all 3 players, because you can go around look for the best deals that suit your requirements.

But at the end of the day, if you need hardcore tools & materials, still need to go oldskool hardware shop find. in DIY you can't even find cement while Ace only sell small packs.

I have no idea how those hardware shop can sell so many things in just 1 shop.

Bought RM2.00+ flip flops.
Better quality than fipper I think :|

No way, it doesn't grip as well and that strap no where near as comfy. I can walk long distances without any problems with fipper.

i really like DIY's light bulbs  cheap, bright and long lasting.    not sure why they stop selling it ?
