don't be misled by the white spot in females as it can present itself in males also but taking form of their protruding 'usus' rather than the females ovipositor tube (aka egg spot)

it's all about ammonia and nitrates, as long as u can keep the those level below danger, bottle of any size will do.

you can check using those ammonia and nitrate testing kits sold in LFS but it's not economical to do so, therefore water change is the best solution.
the smaller the volumn of water used to house betta, the more frequent you have to change water to get rid of ammonia and nitrates. for a container measuring 4x4x4, you will have to do daily water change, twice daily if possible. the containers i use can house 1/3 of a gallon of water, thus enabling me to do weekly water change instead of daily. |

QUOTE(cirebonbetta @ Feb 12 2008, 04:50 PM) Hello everyone. I'm new here. Glad to see a lot of ppl actually love bettas and care for them!! We need more ppl like this especially with the knowledge and interest to jaga bettas workin in pet shops. I got damn angry seeing how bettas are kept in commercial pet shops... you know what I'm talkin about la... >.> I think benny has answered most of your question however, do visit www.bettasocietymalaysia.com.my for the answer to question no. 5 if you're based in the klang valley. if u're based in the south of peninsular malaysia, check out www.bettakakis.com and if you don't mind getting your fish shipped to your doorstep, check out www.betta4u.comAnyways, I've been reading up somewhat about betta... and I heard from some breeder that the algae or izzit the daphnia (that lives on algae) eats the betta punya shit.... which is good. 1-So the question is... maybe this sounds dumb but izzit safe to keep the betta + algae together in an aquarium? Cuz I takut the water become lagi dirty, then the betta fall sick. So it's safe to assume that the betta eats the daphnia that lives on the algae and the algae eats the shit of the betta? Like 1 cycle liddat. 2-Izzit can use tap water *without anti-chlorine* as aquarium water? 3-And does anyone knows where to find ketapang tree in PJ?? 4-Any good recommendations on buying betta live foods such as larvae, white worms, bloodworms, brine shrimp, dapnia from any shop? Got any shop sell kah? Can culture sendiri oso I know but then have to monitor closely lo... if not eg: larvae will jadik mosquito then damn syiok my house nanti. 5-I'm also looking for bettas particularly HM/ DT/Rosetail; multicolour, butterly or marble....transparent oso nice. Better if it's from a breeder or owner and not a pet shop.... Send me a picture. XD Thanks for all the help yeah. |

if you're still insisting to use rain water, make sure the water goes through a mechanical filter (to filter out dirt and debris) and a UV filter to kill germs/bacteria before using the water on your fish.

if i'm not wrong, algae/green water bloom increases ph levels. and it's also a tell-tale sign that there are A LOT of nutrients (read: nitrite/nitrate) in the water and that's not good for any fish. it may be good for fry because green water usually also means infusorians (i.e. fry food)
a good HM will not come cheap. most local breeders will only release on RM50 onwards (up to RM200+ a pair). RM20-RM40 can only get you the short tail version. just remember, most of the time, u get what u paid for if you buy from home breeders, different story if from shops although SLS's pricing is quite reasonable. Do read up on show standards before committing, it can be quite saddening to find out later that the betta that you bought for RM100+ does not even meet the show standard. caveat emptor for show standards, a quite in-depth guide has been posted in www.bettas4all.nl and therefore the local society didn't think of posting a separate one (maybe i should convince them to post one up) ANYWAY either of these sites -> www.bettas4all.nl / www.bettakakis.com has a good write up on show standards for various tail-types. bettas4all.nl would be a better choice imho. btw, i use aged tap water too. usually for 24 hours. i'll only use anti-chlorine if there's emergency (like forgot to fill up aged water tank). fyi, all my bettas live in bare, 6x6inch jars. currently, i have about 20-odd jarred betta, mostly of the dragon variety and pictures can be found at the BSM website under show betta and under threads started by minghan (my name btw). |
