cheapest alternative is those transparent plastic cookie jar with the red cap. u can get those in pj old town for less than RM2.00 each if i'm not wrong. else, go dig around your kitchen if u're still living with your family, i'm sure your parents have some of those tucked somewhere...else just finish the cookies in the jar then use it for betta! win-win situation.

QUOTE(madstone @ May 16 2007, 09:37 AM) as for my fries by that time too late liao, irreversible fin or scale damage might occur. jar males as soon as aggressive behavior (nipping) is observed. jar only those males who are fighting or getting attacked. It will save you some jar washing for a few more days/weeks. my fry, even at 5 weeks, starts flaring already, damn cute! do i need to transfer them to a new tank OR just let them reside there till 5-6 month? u can leave the females together in community tank as they're not as aggresive as the males. |

i only know of 1 way.
look for the egg spot. if the betta is a female, it would have a portruding white spot between her ventral and anal fin. The spot is none other than the ovipositor tube, which during spawning, the eggs will come out from. if it doesn't have an egg spot, then it's definately a male. if u don't know your fins, go -> http://www.bettatalk.com/betta_anatomy.htm |

actually, guppy tank comes in various sizes depending on price. we're refering to those small clear hard-plastic aquarium which they sell in your LFS for about RM3.50 - RM5.50.

QUOTE(ivanlim @ May 21 2007, 02:54 PM) hahahha! later he'll ask you what is LFS. sadly, yea... and i think i got only 1 male from the blue batch. the dad's anal and claudal fin got a bit of red wash. from the pic i posted, the red wash in the claudal is really apparent because the colour has not fully developed (there) yet...LFS = Local Fish shop eh, your babies look like got red wash lah. All also like that? tempted of getting a good show quality blue hm/hmpk male as a shortcut... |

a lot of debate is going on about the benefit of aquarium salt. if you can get a peace of mind from putting aquarium salt then go ahead and use it.

QUOTE(michanz @ Jul 2 2007, 07:15 PM) check a few pages back. yewlin sifu posted something on breeding. a lot of ppl have success in breeding them, else, u won't see the result would u? in any case, spawning them is the easy part...feeding the fry and keeping it all alive could be too much for a newbie. but it's good experience nonetheless.. have fun!sites to read all about betta:- 1) Betta Society of Malaysia 2) Bettatalk 3) Betta Kakis Malaysia (local betta club) This post has been edited by inv: Jul 6 2007, 03:38 PM |

if u haven't started feeding live food, better start now.. else the growth will be stunted. by the time they are the right size, they'll be quite old liao..

QUOTE(freshyyf @ Jul 17 2007, 10:34 AM) Have you face this problem - I try to breed the bettas. The male flares like hell and the female shows mating stripes. But the males did not blow a single bubble? How can I encourage him to build bubble net? I think he is well-conditioned and active. I even put some black water extract. let assume u're doing everything by the book, i.e. 1. male is in side a 5-10 gallon aquarium with plants for the female to hide. 2. a 'container' for him to blow the bubblenest (half-cut styrofoam cup or just a bunch of floating leaves) 3. female is in a 'viewing chamber' inside the aquarium then give him a day or 2 before u release the female. he shud blow bubblenest by then. if he has not, then do not despair, release the female after 3 days but keep a close watch. they sometime uses surface tension to hold the eggs up. good luck and welcome to the most exciting part as a betta enthusiast! http://www.bettatalk.com is a good place to start reading if you have not. |
