What does your niece do that requires such specifications? hmm.gif
Anyways, that's the best you can get with your budget  nod.gif

She just enroll into singapore republic polytechnic and they require every student to have a laptop with below min requirement:-

2.2GHz 64-bit processor
4 GB RAM
250 GB Hard Disk Space
Wireless adapter must minimally support IEEE 802.11g standard (recommended to support dual-band IEEE 802.11a/g/n standard)
Able to support Windows 7 and above Operating Systems

Please help recommend a unit that matches its requirement but keep the budget as low as possible? If possible within 2K if 1.5k is too low to meet its specs. Her course is live science so I think shouldn't have intense graphical requirement as no graphic design.

Eh? Why not buy there?
Usually they have special rates for students in the college/university one right? Can get for really cheap hmm.gif

I don't think live sciences require a very powerful notebook, but still, can consider these if you want nod.gif

Hi, been following this thread for a while smile.gif learnt a lot from tj and raymond. good job guys!

I am looking for a laptop, for adobe after effects (can bare with slow rendering time), light gaming like dota2 only. No preferred brand, budget around 2-2.2k. Screen size 14-15

Currently aiming for:
Lenovo Z510 5940-3401 (WHITE) – 15.6” / i5-4200U (1.6Ghz up to 2.6Ghz, 3MB L3 Cache) / 4GB / 1TB / GT740M 2GB / W8.1 /2years IWS

or

Lenovo Z510 5939-0019 (WHITE) - 15.6"/ i5-4200M (2.5Ghz up to 3.1Ghz, 3MB L3 Cache) / 4GB / 1TB / GT740M 2GB / W8.1 /2years IWS

I saw the latter (i5-4200M) in lenovo official page but not the former one (i5-4200U). Does that mean the former is not "ori" set, haha. Are there a lot of differences between both of them?

Any other suggestions for laptop around that price range?

Thx to all sifus! smile.gif

Thanks for the help, she didnt buy there because she miss the bulk buy date and the laptop offer are damn expensive when you convert to RM. The cheapest is around Sgd $1110 which more than 2.5k here. Their specs given maybe is worth it but deem too expensive for her.

Please refer to below link for their offer

Holy... I understand what you mean man laugh.gif
The notebooks they offer are really high-end, and in most cases, overkilled haha tongue.gif

Personally I think its okay to buy from Malaysia, but you have to make sure that warranty support works over in Singapore, just in case icon_rolleyes.gif

Welcome welcome!
Its good to know that you have made some own research prior to inquiry thumbup.gif
Most of the official websites in Malaysia are not really updated lol, apart from those that actually allows you to buy from the website like Dell, HP, Illegear etc. nod.gif

The Z510 with i5-4200M is the better choice since its running on a Mobile processor- powerful nod.gif
If possible, use remaining budget to upgrade to at least 8GB RAM, it'll help with multitasking and rendering icon_rolleyes.gif

Another option would be this one:
15.6"
Toshiba Satellite L50-A100X/XW, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, W8SL; 3 years local warranty; colors:silver/white

Might be a bit harder to find now though. Personally I prefer the Lenovo more, more solid laugh.gif

Our home town is in JB so no worries when it comes to warranty claim thing buy in JB.

As why their things is overkill I think they got explain abit in their FAQ section:-

1) Why are the prices of laptops cheaper in some of the electronic stores?

Laptops sold at the roadshow are carefully selected to last at least for the next 3 years or more. The same model may be more expensive than those sold at electronic stores due to better specifications and includes 3 years onsite warranty. RP is organising the roadshow and brought vendors together with the aim of providing more competitive prices and choices for
students.

Thanks for the swift response smile.gif biggrin.gif
I can see that you keep recommending everyone to upgrade their ram, it must be awesome. So, there will be a big difference even i don't change it to i-7?
Gonna fly to UK soon, i wonder if the price is cheaper over there? couldn't research much on it. Do you know any uk tech forum?
I guess i will stick with z510 i5-4200m then. The only thing i hate is why there is only white colour available!! scared that it might turn yellowish hmm.gif

Well, you could just get a cheap notebook here and extend warranty to 3 years haha, that will last 3 years too laugh.gif
But there's no doubt that the most of the notebooks offered are of better quality, and possibly reliability nod.gif

In the end whether a notebook lasts or not depends on a little bit of luck, and a lot on user usage and care icon_rolleyes.gif

Oh, I only recommend upgrading RAM when its really necessary laugh.gif
For normal usage its best to at least have 4GB, but if you are into editing, rendering or calculative work, more RAM is better nod.gif We are lucky in a sense that RAMs are so much cheaper now laugh.gif
Whether to get an i7-powered notebook or not depends on how heavy you are with your Adobe work. I suppose the i5 + decent amount of RAM are good enough for most people. And I don't think you can get an i7 with your budget unfortunately

You won't be able to tell the difference between i5 and i7 for normal work usage, provided you have enough RAM nod.gif

Not really sure why you want to get a gaming notebook for your work? hmm.gif
*Assuming your work involves Office tasks

I suppose this variant is the only one within your budget at the moment: not many FullHD notebooks within RM3k unfortunately sad.gif
15.6"
Dell Inspiron 15 7000, i5-4200U + Intel HD4400 + (1366x768; Touch)@RM2899[2.6kg], 6GB, 750GB(5400rpm), W8.1SL, backlit keyboard, 58Whr

*extend to 3 years warranty@~RM250

This model doesn't come with optical drive, not even an external one (most ultrabooks don't come with them to save weight). But you could always buy one separately (Dell offers them too if you are buying from the website) icon_rolleyes.gif
However, the good thing is that you are covered by the best warranty support available in Malaysia nod.gif No point getting a Dell if not for the warranty. So if its not important to you, then the Flex 15, Z510/T or Toshiba L50 would be viable picks too

Actually what's the difference with N550"JV" or N550"JK"?, and also the "CN026H" or "CN077H" behind all those code. Thanks!

N550JV - older model with GT750M DDR3 graphics
N550JK - latest model with GTX850M DDR3 graphics

the code resembles the variant of the specific model but since there is only one model of N550JV and N550JK available, so dont bother about that.

Surface Pro is actually a very great choice, if you can still find one nod.gif
The 128GB version is selling at ~Rm1.9k only, just need to add another ~RM300 to get the type cover and you're good to go- affordable, portable and high quality device. Of course, you do know that its 10" in size right? Might be too small if your work requires a lot of workspace nod.gif

Can consider this one as well:
14"
Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT820M +(1366x768; touch) + 8GB SSHD + 500GB HDD@RM2299, 4GB (soldered), W8, 2 yrs; colors: black/orange
Ultrabooks are basically slim and light notebooks aimed at portability and battery life but compromising on performance
Normal PC notebooks are relatively bulkier but packs a punch for the price you pay
Surface Pro is a Hybrid Convertible that can be "switched" from tablet to laptop mode vice versa, very convenient for those on the go, or those who needs to make presentations using tablets.
*
Hello Sifu, thank you so much for your advice. Ya, surface Pro is very good device but also smaller compare to normal Laptop at 13.3" - 15".

Will check on all of the devices you mentioned and compare. =)
