Actually, you need the fine scratches for the spray paint to stick on. Deswai you must sand it.

You can use the ones for plastic (any hardware store should have) and get 3-4 bottles. One bottle is base coat (most likely white) then 1 or 2 bottles of the desired colour, and lastly the clear coat on top (gloss or matte, up to you). Total cost for spray is about RM5-6 per can.

Sandpaper costs about the same per piece, and you'd want 2 of each of the three grits.

In the end, new colour for keyboard maybe cost you around RM50?

But the satisfaction of having done a completely DIY kit is priceless.

after the painting and finishing the surface will be smooth or the scratches will remain?

Won't see the scratches if you did the base layer correctly. The surface in the end will depend on your last clear coat (aka finishing coat). Some people recommend that you make multiple layers of the final coat instead to ensure a consistent texture.

So, sanding = make the surface abraded so that the paint stick.

Foundation aka first coat = make things white so that you main coat is visible.

Main coat = this is where your colour comes from. Multiple layers until happy with colour.

Top coat aka finishing coat aka clear coat = texture when you touch touch.

Since you need to dry dry a bit between coats, doing it on a sunny day is the best.

both abs and pbt keycaps can have textured (a bit rough or sandy) surface or smooth surface.
just that for textured surface, abs will be smooth-en easily through extensive use.
whereas pbt takes a very very very long time to reach that stage.

do bear in mind, it's not just the sound, the feeling is different as well. u will be landing on a soft surface instead of the hard surface.
