Hi,

My aunt has got a Honda City S 2009 (2009-2013 model) with mileage around 20-30k only and letting go to me for around 23k+. She is the first hand owner and has been using it since for driving around in town. Non flooded/major accident unit. Is it worth to pick this and aim to drive it another 7-10y? I am using a 12yo Myvi, so probably topup 10k can get this city or get other new cars. Is there anything I need to be prepare or should be aware if I get this car? is it worth it/suitable for me?

I'm not that kind of person that really go take care the car very properly other than just service/change parts when it's due (average owner - not my car is my wife mentality). My current myvi is fun enough to drive although abit lacking when going uphill. I don't mind getting something similar to current myvi but any weaker is not that fun anymore as I'm using the car for everything (city commute, leisure drive, outstation - mostly genting, cameron, pg, jb etc.) Want a good drive yet also want to save money. Options are this honda city 2009, axia (meh), saga (affordable but is it better than my myvi? or 2009 city is better option?), myvi 1.3/persona (top up >10k from saga  shocking.gif).
*
i concur with bro Thrust.
since i joined the GM2 FB group, i saw many people still buying this car 2nd hand now. after more than 10 years.
mostly are still very happy with it. not that I need it but it does prove that this car is quite problem free, if you get the one maintained well.

not sure if there is any typo but 20-30km still? looks like a good deal, if you trust her or her family to maintain the car well. nevertheless, spend some money go to a workshop and have them check it out lor. since its your aunt, should have no problem doing it, i don't expect the fee to be high too for the checking.

i can't say if you still can drive 7-10 years but I'm planning and hopeful that i can drive this still as my primary (may not be only in the future) car for the next 5 years. at least that's the plan.
and you are driving the same year, or almost myvi. i can honestly tell you for sure its better than your myvi (maintenance notwithstanding).

but you just need to understand lor, there is not Bluetooth (can buy a device for less than rm10 for that biggrin.gif), 2 airbags, no VSC, etc.

as for maintenance, since is its a more than 10 years old car, expect need to change some parts bit by bit lor. i would say, if you knowledgeable/comfortable/happy to maintain your myvi, you can maintain it the same way for this city, if you choose to take it.

at 134k km, I suppose there will be leaks but minor. Once you see the residue stain recurring, best is to replace these worn gasket. Else, your engine bay will be covered will oil stain in the long run.
*
yeap. that's the plan. but since its more than what i first anticipated, i may just go and replace it around april during my engine oil maintenance.
though, like you advise, maybe i get a can of degreaser and clean it up a bit and see how it goes.
btw, vmag helped me to cleaned the engine bay on nov last year, so pretty confident whatever oil i saw now is "new" this past few months instead of years of accumulation.
the cleaning part is just for my diy/learning/fun + good to know hows the leakage rate.

I think don't waste money and buy the degreaser to clean it yourself.

Don't clean it until April when you go replace the seals. At least he will be able to guess where the leaks are coming from. After replacing those seals, ask him to clean your engine again lor.
*
haha..the degreaser i mean is just those Mr DIY stuff. shouldn't be expensive. and i don't think i able to clean very good too coz i am those "takut mati" type especially on engine matter.
in fact, i am not comfortable to even open up the radiator cap myself. scared didn't cap it back properly lol.

i was thinking between the time i clean and april, should have enough to let him see where its leaking from.
but i can see where you are coming from.

Thanks for the opinions and advices. Is there anything I need to be prepare/aware of so i won't get shock (bill/life shock)?

I have heard of several issue. Will want to know how to fix and cost.
1. Air bag (don't know if it has been changed, if not how much will it be since already missed the recall program)
2. Torque converter (lost of power when shifting gear 2 to 3?)
3. Starter motor (hard to start after a short break)

Thanks
*
cannot ask your aunt if she has replaced the airbag?
get the vin/chassis number from her. then check online here https://productrecall.honda.com.my/

mine for reference.

Guys, is it still necessary to turn off A/C before starting the engine? If the A/C is turned on, does it put extra load on the battery?
*
Extra load to battery I believe yes but should be minimal and if your car battery is healthy, should not be a problem at all. But if battery weak, some times when the air con was on the faster fan speed, you might struggle to start, so turn it off and start. But the underlying issue is weak battery.

It’s not necessary to turn off ac before start engine, but you can do so. No harm also. Except hassle. Sometimes when I feel like it I will turn of ac still have fan on when I’m going into parking complex. To get out the moisture inside to prevent bacteria build up. But more prominent in conti cars. Again not an issue. More like preference.

You try clean it again and observe further. Sometimes, those residue could be from outside rain water that went in during your drive in the rain.
*
haha.. i think you are on to something.
i checked and just noticed after a certain line below, the engine bay is still dirty, and the solenoid is below that line laugh.gif
i also notice, its quite near the battery, and i spray silicon spray on my car battery occasionally, plus for the past a year, i lost the straw nozzle and i spray straight from bottle.

laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

last weekend i went to refill my spare tyre. was frustrated coz i mis-install it back twice and have to reinstall it again. bad design to need to unscrew and flip over to refill spare tyre.
the myvi in front of me refill his spare tyre with ease. i took it as an omen and refill mine too since i need to travel during CNY.

recommended pressure 420, mine dropped to 199 laugh.gif
and notice its tubeless tyre, from what i read, theoretically should have lesser possibility of tyre bursting in general than normal tyres with tube (what i concerned is more while pumping)

Wanted to check with you.. Your radiator top fiber casing, is it still black or started to turn yellowish and now at what mileage?

I wanted to gauge and see other City and see how's their radiator top casing condition.
*
I've heard about this yellowing but seriously i have no idea what to look for.
generally speaking its black, losing it blackness i guess? its like our window black side panel, the black losing its blackness and getting greyer because of exposure to sun?
but since then i have been experimenting applying wax after finish washing my car to the panel, results are quite good. its returning to black.
sometimes i suka suka alternate with my UV protection spray that suppose to use in the car interior.

plus, now i also apply wax to my headlights and tail lights biggrin.gif

I'll take a closer look and report back these 2 days
still at 13xk km

I am sticking to BHP since it offers Euro 3 grade fuel.. As for RON95 and RON97, I will be sticking to RON95 as the L15A7 requires a minimum of RON91 to run. RON95 still have an additional 4 Octane number to spare  tongue.gif

I have a question though... Where does our L15A7 EGR valve is located? I see the old City as well the new City have their EGR valve located on the lower left of the engine. Ours don't have it... Really curious where it is located.

It’s finally happening bros.
I saw a patch of oil on the parking lot.

And even before then I already have intention to check engine bay. I saw my transmission is leaking. Basically the whole big block of transmission lower half/quarter part, I can see it’s oily. Dammit.

Checked the oil level, it’s like 1/1.5cm away from the mouth of the dipstick opening.

I already took leave on Friday initially. I will go to workshop.

Not sure how’s the damage. Doesn’t look like from where I reported earlier.

update on this. Friday went, there were bz, initial diagnose is transmission oil leaking, say better come back early next week and need leave the car for a day to fix so no need rush to fix, better workmanship. cost estimate 500-600.
today go again, rupanya its engine oil leaking. can be done in a few hours, cost estimated 300-400.

turn out to be rm330.
changed
Valve Cover Gasket, Cam O'ring, Cam Oil Seal, Vtec Spool Filter, Vtec O'ring

personally happy with it. when got such problem i pull a figure (rm700) out of my head.
cost wise, much better than expected.

they advise to monitor the situation.
lets see if it solved all the issues laugh.gif

Thanks
Mine has major leaking at engine bay as well sweat.gif
I first solve on the engine Oil cap leaking , engine oil level drops wasn’t that visible anymore
*
last year i visit vmag, they also help me change.
there is oil around the cap for years, i thought its usually some foreman spill over during oil change. and i never bothered to clean.
they just mentioned it and since its old and cheap to replace, i just let them replace it.

only pass 2 weeks suddenly i notice got oil drip to the floor, its not that visible except for a spot where i also just come back from rain so the oil and water mixed on the floor it become a big patch.
usually after keep overnight, the patch is like the old 50 cent coins size.

but when they jack it up, i saw the whole underside memang covered with oil.
and they said after they fix it, the top all filled with oil.

perhaps you should monitor it closely and if financially okay and convenient, go and let a mechanic have a look and fix it.
you can see the price i shared, not so expensive also. plus more than 10 years already. some fix here an there is expected biggrin.gif

better be safe than sorry coz i want to stretch the lifespan of the car as much as possible also, if it makes sense financially
