Was reading alot about notebooks with 860m and it brought me here lol.
I bought the GE60 with 860m few months ago and imo MSI should follow how acer or asus deals with quality control and heating issues.

edit: i mean in regards to v15 nitro or the g551

Can tell me which model you get ? is it MSI GE60 Apache Pro ?
I heard a lot ppl said when it's under full load or intense gaming it is very hot..
You got this problem also ??
My friend's one is so damn hot even with a cooler + turbo fan + IC diamond thermal + setting processing power to Max 90%  hmm.gif
*
Yeah the pro version with i7. I did top up a 256gb ssd for OS. I can say it heats up about 92 degrees for CPU and 90 degrees for gpu but no trottling for both, slight boost on cpu and max boost on gpu on intense games like tomb raider or crysis 3. I read somewhere if u set 99% cpu the heat drops about 5-8% cor both. The cooling system with one heatpipe for each cpu and gpu is serious not enough. I still using stock paste though...

With that said. variable heat levels that is reported so far shows that MSI QC is inconsistant. The IPS display is very nice though smile.gif

Edit: and with max fan aka hair dryer mode tongue.gif

Both laptops should perform similarly in performance. The only differences would be heat as ge60 expels heat to the left of the laptop while v15 is towards the back. The heatsink in ge60 dont do its job well. Ge60 has gamer-centric features like Steelseries multicolored KB and killerlan ethernet and a optical drive but the nitro slim build without the optical drive. You can check reviews in notebookcheck.net.
But then again its up to u which features you would like and can you live with the drawbacks...

Update on my son's ACER V Nitro:

This afternoon I went into his room and touched the unit and the entire right side was hot, not really really hot but hot. And on the left side, the QWEASDZXC keys were warm. So no big issue for my son - like I mentioned earlier, right hand using mouse. Note: his room air conditioning was turned off and the ceiling fan in operation.

Now, I just enter his room again and he still playing since afternoon. Guess what, the left size of the unit is warm; and the right side, i.e. the qweasdzxc keys where had just a slightly warm, can say normal. Note: his room air conditioning was on.

I really wonder if having the air-con on does really make any difference to the heat or was it all in my mind ........

Anyway, both time when I went and touched the unit, it was silent and I cannot hear any fan noise. Note: My son wear headphones.
*
Ambient temperature does effect the laptop's heat. Recommend using cooler pads whether u have air-con on or not. V15 is thin so heat is more noticable but not as bad as my thicker GE60.

The hotter side should be where the cpu is located, haswell cpus are "famous" for their heat issues....

Ge60 or Ge70 with 860m is the Apache Pro aka "PE" version. 850m is the non pro version aka "PC".
The 60 is 15inch and 70 is 17 inch.

My Ge60 always heats up to 90+ even with the fan max speed. You could dry ur wet hair with it lmao. But at idle its only 44-46 degrees. I suspect its the i7 4700 giving trouble. The refresh i7-4710 is cooler. Should have waited 4months haihzzz D:

Yea bro. Really awesome cause this laptop is thin and light, i dont expect it to be that good. Thumbs up for acer. Previously using their 4830tg. Its a well built also. I played battlefield 3 on my 4830tg before and now played it on my nitro, the difference is night and day man! Can easily max out everything on FHD and still got 50+ above fps. Really love the cooling also as its really quite while gaming. Overall really great job from acer. Im now playing dragon age:inquisition on this beast.  thumbup.gif
*
Damn... I barely can play for 2hours then need to rest 30minutes to let my ge60 cool down. My big fan useless when it has so 2heat pipes only...

*
Its not over the top bad. 89-91 degrees average after playing awhile but i can't stand the heat lol. I'll get u the reading smile.gif

Ahhh i see. I barely feel any heat on this nitro, maybe because the heat goes out at the back, palmrest place is really cool, the only place thats little warm is top side of keyboard. Others all cool. thumbup.gif im thinking of underclocking my laptop. To make it more cooler. Haha. biggrin.gif
*
Bro u have twin heatpipes for BOTH cpu and gpu. And twin silent fans. Best optimum design. It took YEARS for msi to think twin fans is the best to go (look at gt72).

You could use power settings to underclock ur cpu, imo its the main heat culprit. Set settings to 99% and ur cpu will max clock at 2.5ghz (i7 4710 max speed without boost). You dont need intel boost for most games. Try the setting and see if it works but i'll be more envious of u bro sad.gif

I did that on my msi to prevent random fan hairdryer speed while doing normal task like web browing and excel/msdoc stuff. Its already mildly loud at 3k rpm while idle and there nothing i can do to lower the fan speed.

Ahhh i see. Wow, never know about it. Good to know that. thumbup.gif Ayte bro thanks for the tips! Will test it out tomorrow. Hope it works cause i dont really need the turbo boost anyway. Already got used to core i5. Haha. biggrin.gif
*
No prob smile.gif
Games are not bottlenecked by cpu but by gpu. 2.5ghz is more than enough. Unless u want encode vids or do photoshop or something like that... I can advise modifying max cpu power 99% at balance mode and 100% for high performance mode at power settings, ac or battery mode. U can actually tweak alot of things at power options.

You can select whatever power settings with a click as you need then. Sorry i am lazy thats y i do this haha.

tested out as what u stated, but i don't know how to see the difference between on turbo boost or not. haha.  sweat.gif anyway, i played bf3 single player on fhd ultra setting for around 1 & 1/2 hours, (i am bit surprised can get constant 60fps, previously played bf3 on my 4830tg low settings also cant get 60fps sweat.gif). Finally i can hear my dual fan kicks in! haha! but to my surprise the fan is not as loud as my previous Y500. Im really damn impressed with this laptop, plus im playing it while im laying on my bed, put the laptop on my belly and leg as support (lazy mode, haha!). Previously cant do like this on my Y500 cause its f***en heavy, this nitro is really lightweight.  thumbup.gif

Haha now u know the true power of the gtx860m. When u let the cpu simply roam around with its turbo u get unnecesery heat, which translates to less thermal ceiling for ur gpu. Besides, play games mah, need more gpu power LOL.
Acer may not be famous for good laptops but once awhile they can tiba-tiba become pro in laptop designs haha.

im thinking to upgrade my hdd to ssd, should i migrate window 8.1 to the new ssd or install back window 7.
*
U can but make sure u have the correct driver version for win 8.1 or else u will have difficulty after u install the win8.1. Ur drivers for win7 may or may not work. In my old laptop i sticked to win7 for 7 years, win7 is still very good, not necessery for upgrade.

The screen is abit dim. Anyway to increase it? Setting or driver?
*
U may adjust via ur display brightness. And if that doesnt help then u can use windows display color calibration and adjust the gamma levels.
Btw what laptop are u using? If ur laptop is using tn screen normally their gamma and brightness level isnt high with factory settings so u need to calibrate it.

I asked my son couple days back if his Acer V Nitro gets hot? He said no.

Then I asked him why when I touched the unit on the third day the right side of the keyboard was hot? He then only told that was because he was playing two games at the same time on that day! How he plays two games at the same time beats me!

Anyway, for those of you who are into leaisure reading and got time to waste, click here to read my article Spending My Children Inheritance, where I wrote about getting my son a gaming notebook, how I ended getting him the Acer V Nitro and touched on the price, where I bought it and why he did not get the ASUS G751. Also posted his Acer V Nitro with his Razer Mamba mouse.

Sir u have a good laptop. Many reviews have stated the thermal system is very good, at max also below 90 celcius.

Yes well, unfortunately the Nitro I got developed some problems with the graphics.

Flickering screen with pink flashes, even when nothing is on. Something seriously wrong with the graphics there.
*
Hmm, try reinstalling with latest nvidia drivers. If that does not work, try installing the nvidia driver from ur drivers cd included with ur notebook. If not it may be a faulty gpu and u need to send back for warranty or RMA.

Tried doing that from the early hours this morning when I noticed the problem.

Come to think of it, the unit did give me some signal that something is wrong, when I got it from my friend. When I was customising the software, there was this annoying flicker, but I chalked it off, as you say to the need of installing new drivers.

The the pink flashes came out, and I managed to video the whole thing. Nice to have the Acer guy speechless when I pointed the problem out.

The not so nice part - Need to wait until 2nd or 3rd to get a replacement unit.  rclxub.gif
*
Ah so u RMA get new unit? Better unbox at the shop and test run abit. Then go home install gpu intensive games to max test it. Thats what i did with my msi bro. Cant trust manufacturer's QC test lol.

Sending it back to Acer under DOA rules. Did press them about a replacement model, but was told, really really there is no stock, at least until next week 2nd or 3rd January. Not going to wait that long, things do change fast these days. Plus got a lot of Asus laptops to move.

Funny thing is, a lot of parents are shopping, at it is fun to see how their sons more or less is trying to get their parents to buy the gaming laptops (serious la pak, this one I need for auto cad, right mr salesman)...
*
They sure got stock want. U need to press them more bro.

Haha when i bought my ge60 and was unboxing it then a 18+ year old kid and his parents came to shop looking for laptops. The parents looked unhappy cuz they wanted to get a asus lappy for about 2.5k but i was sort of flashing my steelseries keyboard on my msi and the kid also wanted it LOL. Feel bad to the parents wei... I think they end up with a Y50 for rm3999.... Still not bad mah, red backlit kb...

How is your GE60? The MSI guys are asking us to stock more, a friend of mine here also does, since the market here in Seremban is growing.

At least we know what to expect from the Acer guys.

I do suspect that they have stock, yet are loath to lose a stock due to a DOA claim.

------

Forgot to add, most parents see the red backlit, big flag there that their kid want to game instead of studying on the thing.
*
So far so good for my GE60, only complaint is the fan is loud... Fast but loud. The exterior looks nice too, subdued but with rgb kb haha. Also i bought the one without ssd, i wanted to add an msata as OS drive. Most shops are doing for a fee but the msi dudes in the service centre they will install and transfer the OS to the ssd... For free!

This the reason why i choose msi and not asus...good service.

Still its partial your fault showing off that feature spoiling that kid.

Aiyo... I work and keep money for 8months lol. Hard earned lappy must show off mah, and people who buys msi laptops tend to show off hehe. Yeah my bad tongue.gif
But at least his lappy would last throughout his college years.

I think its common sense if u need to have a good gaming notebook to last till 4 years and max every single games u need to spend for a laptop with top tier gpu eg gtx980m...which cost around 7-9k. OR, go for a gaming desktop rig for about 5k+ and only you are future proof. If u spend 3-4k on a midrange laptop or desktop, suffice to say as years goes by u have to down tune ur game settings.

Or if u are like me i still play old games like starcraft 2, mass effect series and other games pre-2014. Its all about contention and acceptance that high-end gaminh rigs are still expensive...and will be more once GST is implemented.

Must ukur baju di badan sendiri first bro and sis. My old Rm2700 asus laptop lasted me from 4 college years till 3years of working life. When u lived a normal life u gotta live with moderation in mind. Sorry for the nags lmao.
