islamic method.

engagement is not a married.
engagement breakup is called putus tunang
married breakup/divorce is called cerai

engagement breakup doesnt need go thru divorce procedure.
just meet the partner parents and told them want to putus tunang because of (put your reason)

engagement = preparation (by both parties) towards marriage ceremony.

NOT yet married status.

thx for replied, but in my fren case, is a non islamic method,
and he already obtain some sort of sijil (Daftar Perkahwinan) from JPN,
so does this means his status already become married in Malaysia LAw?

For non-Muslim, the critical part is the registration at JPN. Not the ceremony you might or might not have. Some people skip the ceremony. This is call "eloping". Yes, your friend is already legally married, if already registered.

YES. Once you signed the registration, it became legal partner.

oh...god...things get complicated..
so let's say, they want to break up due to some issues,
does it means need to go thru the divorce procedure ? means hire lawyer..wait until the court issue certificate of divorce..things like that...
btw, they do not have children or property, and only 25 years old..

Sijil Daftar Perkahwinan = Marriage Certificate

JPN (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara) = National Registration Department

Yes, JPN is the national registration department. They also register marriages and divorces as well.

And, yes, looks like normal marriage cert. Congratulations to your friend on getting married. smile.gif

This part of chinese culture I totally can't brain. Your friend already go to JPN and ROM and got Marriage Cert, why does he still consider himself 'engaged?' Legally he is already married mah, which carries more weight and standing than whatever cultural gate crashing wedding banquet thing.
