just want to inquiry, after engagement for 2 years is that means automatically become married status??

this is due to i have a friend who want to break up with his partner, but they already engage, not yet held wedding dinner,
so they need to go thru divorce procedure according to Malaysia law?
Or what should do if want to break up??

thx for replied, but in my fren case, is a non islamic method,
and he already obtain some sort of sijil (Daftar Perkahwinan) from JPN,
so does this means his status already become married in Malaysia LAw?
