Hi Nightfelix,

HPP filter systems uses electromagnetic fields to trap the dust particles. Hence, ALL particles will be trapped regardless of its micron size. Plus, it is inexpensive to replace the HPP Filter and could last up to 1 year to 1 year 6 months time.

They generate ozone as a byproduct, correct?

So does it as efficient as HEPA filter?

Since now a days, those medical manufacturer or hospital are stil using HEPA filter technology, that is why I don't see much advantages over the HEPA efficiency and realibility. What are the average of CADR?

"... all of the ESPs and ionizers tested produced ozone at levels that are below health-based standards for all the tests conducted. None of the devices produced ozone concentrations above 45 ppb during the face tests, and all produced room concentrations below 16 ppb in the room test. All of the devices examined produced less than 3 mg/hr of ozone. ...

Caution also is warranted because introduction of any amount of ozone into indoor spaces may result in increased levels of formaldehyde, ultrafine particles, and other pollutants due to the reaction of ozone with terpenes (fragrance compounds such as pinene and limonene) and other chemicals emitted from modern consumer products and building materials. Additionally, operation and maintenance practices of air cleaner owners have the potential to significantly impact the amount of ozone produced. Recent survey results indicate that most California air cleaner owners operate their indoor air cleaning devices continuously and year round; however, owners typically do not maintain their devices as instructed by the manufacturer. This can lead to excess ozone generation and greater ozone emissions than observed in the tests reported here. "

Not sure... mine is Atmosphere from Amway company, mine only need to be replace once around 3-5years based on the manuals, but my machine indicator haven't turn red, using since 2012, so once the filter indicator turn red, I just drop off to my nearby shop to buy the filter.

Edit: some people I know using from Coway company which have 3-4months for maintenance, so the owners might didn't know how much or how often the filter have been replace during the maintenance...

May I know how much is the Atmosphere replacement filter?

Hey zeb, Nope there is no byproduct here. Ozone byproducts are bad for health.

All the dust particles are trapped inside the HPP filter. Nothing gets past this HPP filter.
*
Isn't HPP an electrostatic device? Electrostatic air cleaners generate small amount of ozones as a byproduct. Does their literature mention some special mechanism to prevent the generation of ozone?

"Electrostatic air cleaners (sometimes known as electrostatic precipitators) are highly efficient filtration devices that use electrostatic attraction to remove fine particulate matter such as dust and cigarette smoke from the air. Electrostatic air cleaners ionize (or electrically charge) particles as incoming air is drawn over an electronic cell. The charged particles are then attracted to and trapped by a series of flat collector plates that are oppositely charged, with the particles literally “sticking” to the collection plates until they are manually removed.

Electrostatic air cleaners have two main drawbacks. First, they can produce ozone – a known lung irritant and asthma trigger. While many units produce negligible levels of ozone, there are some brands and models on the market that exceed government safety standards. They may also produce ultra-fine particles from the reaction of the ozone with indoor chemicals (e.g., those from household cleaning products, paints, flooring or carpeting) that some people are sensitive to."

No HEPA filter = clean only large particulates.
With HEPA filter = even smell is also removed (eg finish eating nasi lemak, turn on filter, after a few minutes, there's no smell at all).

The cheap cheap ones will not have built in detectors.
Without the built in detector, you don't know if it is actually cleaning the air or not.
With the detector, it is easy to tell. Open the door, dirty outside air comes in, and you can see it on the panel. Stir fry some chili dish, and the detector indicate it.
Without the detector, you turn on the power, and the fan starts. Turn off the power, and the fan stops.
With the detector, I turn it on when I get home and the fan starts. When the air is clean, the fan stops automatically. If I open the outside door and dirty air comes in, the fan automatically starts up, and stops again when the air is clean. I only turn it off when I leave for work the next day.

The one I have also have this humidifier function as well. Which now that I have it, I don't think I need it. Only makes the machine more expensive. I never use it. The air isn't that dry because I do not run the air conditioner 24/7.

hey guys, recently bought a sharp FPF30LH.

the purifier emits funny ash-smell everytime i turn it on and lasts about 5 minutes then gone. what is the problem?

sharp email support says its haze and ask me to vacuum the filter and expose it to sun for a few hrs. I vacuumed it but since haze is strong, I think exposing it to sun will only make matters worse if it is indeed caused by haze....

got for Dolomities. Price difference not much and got more functions.

http://www.coway.com.my/ProductOverview.aspx?CID=2

best is Lombok II.. if u can afford 3.3k. Can do installment plan up to x36 months also (0 interest with credit card). Their RM500 yearly service also can do installment plan (this fee includes all service parts, as well as increase warranty +1 more year each time). Maybe that's why Coway is more expensive than those u buy from shops directly.. as the warranty can go on indefinitely as long u renew its yearly service.

Lombok II works fast, best for living room area. My office using this.. and I tested it at my house also. Experience is chun. damn good filter.

Coway also I notice has filters that is fitted with many layers.. anti virus and anti bacteria, pollen, allergens, hepa, etc etc up to 8 layers for their most expensive model.

Dolomities more for medium size hall or room. Using this at my son's babysitter.. coz they dont have air filter there so we put it there for time being. Good model but works slower than Lombok.

spoke to a friend this evening about Air Purifiers and she said she using Sharp - good.. so is her friend. said can sleep better wo...

thought of getting 1 now with the haze and being a former asthma patient, i think good to put 1 in the bedroom..

problem is i have limited budget..

saw this in the Sales thread - https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=3608583&hl= ...

have back-read posts up to 1 year ago and am not sure if a common brand like those would be good? [NightFelix] [Onemorething] [zeb kew] can share some thoughts? notworthy.gif
also the issue is when they change model, the filters they dont reproduce anymore?
how about the problem that it further dehumidifies the room yawn.gif

if its not a value buy, i might as well not buy it.

No. You need a HEPA based Air Purifier. Not a Ionizer. Plasmacluster is a "Marketing Name", is a more simple way to pronounce, we call it Ionizer. You can simply do a quick Google Search on Medical Studies found that, Ionizer doesn't help Asthma / Allergy people, it even worsen your situation. Xiaomi Air Purifier are budget alternative.

11st street with discount slightly less.. but got warranty? couldnt find anywhere stating..

RM790 consider cheap. Lazada selling one RM899 with 3months warranty.

One of my friends bought himself one through Agents direct ship from China also RM720. Not sure about how warranty works if ship back to China, so if yours offer local warranty (mean he bear the costs ship back to China repair) means consider good.
