for me i will prefer 5.1 over 3.1.2. because as for current there are more movies/video with 5.1 than atmos. Some movie even with atmos also only have 10 to 20 mins of ceiling sound so ur speaker will be sitting idle there. 5.1 however is a more common setup. Basic surround movie will give u this surround effect. the placement can be on the side of your bed..

just slightly behind ur bed will do..

upfiring is hit or miss.. it required perfect reflection to reach your ear.. u need to adjust the speaker to reflect to you properly.. you may end up ur speaker being place at the awkward location like the middle of your walkway.. if u really wan atmos u can consider ceiling speaker for better effect..

Here's a different perspective since your space is quite limited, how about you throw all those plans away in having surround and just put ALL your budget into the best L + R speakers you can buy? Yes, I'm saying just do stereo.

One pair of good speakers are way better than 5 lousy speakers for the same price. Let that sink in for a moment.

ben3003, id also recommend to double /triple up your budget go middle/ high end 2 channel. its so good that i never imagine so much potentials than 5.1 surround setup

I will tell you something that most people with a center channel would not like to admit - dedicated center channels are trash. When you flip a speaker over horizontally, to make the cabinet as small as possible so that it can fit below a display and then you try to cram in another driver (or 2, or 3) that is usually smaller than the L/R, the first compromise is usually the crossover. Tweeters are also naturally designed for horizontal wide dispersion, not vertical (unless you go for ribbon tweeters).

ALL center channels are approached with a compromise in design. You cannot beat physics.

The only good center channel is if you have the same exact speaker as your L and R.  The only reason to have a dedicated center channel is if you have multiple seats, so that people on the left and right of you can still hear dialogue from the middle of the screen. If you are sitting alone, a phantom center is 99/100 times better than a dedicated center as both your L/R speakers are doing the work instead of a single puny center.
