can we bring food like meggi, serunding bla2 to UK?how much maximum luggage can we bring?30kg and if it exceed how much they'll charged u?
*
as long as its "dry" food you should be alright, but i would advice you not to bring too much.

i dont know what your baggage allowance is, the normal busines class allowance is 30kg and economy class 20kg.

if you do not exceed 5 kg more than your allowance, you should be ok.

good luck.

i just arrived newcastle in UK. In my case, we whole group ( 4 ppl) which consist 3 students and 1 traveller, they allow us to bring 120kg, mean 30kg each, but we have to give kopi-o for the custom ppl about rm100. So i think is reasonable if you lucky enough.

When i arrive Newcastle, i plan to declared my food and some stationary cause inside got many can food la, chinese herb and so on. But the officer in Newcastle just ask us to go straight to the entrance without checking. So i think if you arrive in small airport, it is more easy for you to enter the Great UK.!! drool.gif

Now the problem i get is the private accommodation is so far from Newcastle University. I don understand how those student from Malaysia ( my senior ) called it is near. 40 minutes walk to school.  sweat.gif  i guess i have to get used to it d..

ps: Anyway, travel with Emirates is good la, if you need wait more than 4 hours in Dubai, you can ask for free meal in a shop called don know what name in the airport.

Added on September 17, 2007, 12:50 pm

like what i say, it really depend your luck. For my experience travel with Emirates, they allow me to bring 1 hang luggage(7kg), 1 handbeg and 1 laptop beg. I know the rule stated is 1 hand luggage per person but in my group, all ppl carried 3 hand luggage. Not only us, i see plenty of students also carried quite a no of beg with them.  drool.gif
*
the 1-hand-luggage rule only applies if you're flying out of heathrow. no other airport inthis world has this rubbish rule except them. its apparently a security measure since the london bombing.

even BA protested the ruling because there's it only adds to the amount of luggage being processed by the checked-in baggage machine which slows down baggage processing.

Sigh, to my suprise, not only malaysian students, most of the local people here kinda obsessed with mobile phone& accessories as well. It's quite annoying when most of the conversation is about phone n stuff and show off your gadgets: the kind of mentality that I didn't expect from someone from first class country
*
it's actually even more widespread here, due to the high purchasing power of the people.

I wasn't only talking about mobile phones. Yes ,showing off one's mobiles is a lot more common in Malaysia, but in terms of personal electronics, like ipods, PDAs, macbooks etc usage in the UK is a lot more ubiquitous. In Malaysia, most kids can't afford those things and rely on their "godlike" mobile phones to do everything for them (as a music player, video player, PDA etc).

from my point of view, nott is a good uni wif good environment but the "ISOLATED" part...is depends on individual.the campus compund is darn huge and lots of dorm provided but for me it is too isolated, feel like i m grounded in the uni...however the greeny environment is nice and peaceful...btw no offence for those who is in nott...i just wanna share my view...but i personally dun think crimes will happen in campus compund,so dun worry too much...cheers...and happy christmas... biggrin.gif

i thought i was the only one.

notts certainly does have a big leafy, nice looking campus but its a bit of a trek away from the city centre which could potentially bore you if you were like me (like to be in a city)

I disagree. It is not a matter of how you think. It is a figure given to students who intend to study in London. It is a figure for students to reasonably live in London without having constant thoughts on financial matters. The universities are aware of that and they do caution potential students to not underestimate the living cost as it will have a negative effect on one's academic performance. That said, one does not simply put £6k a year and convince oneself one can pull through with that sum.

£6k is simply not enough for one academic year in London, £8k, likely. Look through the prospectuses of all universities in London and their ballpark is at least £1k per month with some leeway.
*
actually you can manage OK with £6K/year for personal expenses in London. not luxurious by any stretch but you'll certainly get by.

Hi all. I'm seriously considering to continue my degree in UK (birmingham), but I don't want to burden my parents too much. Is there any way I can get free stuff there, second hand or what not? Like when I first arrive, I'll need bedsheets (duvet), yea? And what else?
*
actually you can get lotsa free stuff.

if you get in touch with senior malaysians or even non malaysians who are moving off, they will usually be quite happy to give you their crap, like duvet, kitchen stuff, study lamp etc. obviously these wont be of very high quality because those ones get taken back to malaysia with them, but still, asking could save you tonnes of money.

good luck.

it would be easier to get in touch with them before u embark from malaysia. that way, they could organize amongst those around who're leaving or moving away, pool the stuff u need, and keep it somewhere for u to pick up. most of my friends just throw away stuff they dont need, and never really bothered to sell them, mainly bcoz they dont know to whom they'd wanna sell em to.
*
as an undergrad, i used to throw away my duvet everytime i went back to malaysia in the summer as i couldnt be bothered to lug it about for storage. when i came back theres bound to be someone who didnt want their duvet anymore. resourceful eh? save the trouble of storage and money to buy one.

theres even one guy who used to throw away his kitchen stuff EVERY year before summer hols and just bought more or got them from his friends when he returned.

how exactly do you get in touch with the students the *before* I go? Is there any website (for birmingham) I can go to?
*
which uni are you heading to? brum uni? aston? brum city uni?

google for uni of xxx malaysian students association. and when you get there, email the webmaster or something or join the forum as some websites have them.

obviously you'll have to chat a little bit before you ask for their stuff.

to get a masters in engineering takes 4 yrs or 5 yrs? when i went to the malaysian institute of engineers to ask some questions, the lady there mentioned that 4 yrs would be me graduating with an m.eng, which isnt masters, and that i;d have to do another year to get my masters.

and this confused me, can someone explain please. thanks. smile.gif

MEng is a masters degree. Its an undergraduate masters. Are you thinking of MSc or MEng?

at the moment yes. it might change with time though.

it is not working visa/permit but international graduates schemes, which allow you to stay for 1 year after graduation. reason for that is to allow you to get a job within the 1 year period. and the application costs about £500.

though do not depends on that visa too much. like said, it will change with time, two years ago, it was called science and engineering graduates schemes, where only science and engineering graduates with 2:1 degree above could  successfully get the visa.

if you are really to study in uk, make sure you can secure a job (graduate scheme usually) way ahead of your graduation.
*
its not gonna be called IGS anymore this year. and the conditions going to change as well. but not exactly sure to what.

hi. kinda interested in studying in the uk in automotive/mechanical eng. cos most of the big car companies have r&d centers there since the uk is one of the largest auto markets in the world (3rd or 4th b4 the chinese starting buying cars). would like to know universities that have a highly rated mechanical eng faculty that offers automotive engineering. or links that provides info on the mech eng dept of the universities. interested in a uni that offers a sandwich year too. btw, do all graduates of uk universities get 1 year work visa in the uk or does it only apply to certain universities?

thanks in advance.
*
cardiff is particularly known for their mech eng degree. but really, any good uni with a mech eng degree programme is fine.

it depends on the kind of scholarship youre appying for. if its at a non-top uni for a non-competitive course, then yes it'll be easy, but for top unis, its gonna be tougher.

2nd upper is fine. just do well in other parts of the application. good luck.
