QUOTE(liew_jls @ Feb 22 2008, 11:34 PM) just to let those who has interest working in UK when you guys are graduate. Home office has change the system, they are combining IGS and HSMP. From 28 Feb 2008, there will have a new system will be introduce, 2008 Points Based Tier System. i saw in the news, as well as several political talk shows addressing this issue. the plan is to tighten the noose over the immigration and citizenship issues. now they want only those who can contribute back to the country can be allowed to migrate here. meaning, if u're a graduate and a professional, u stand a good chance migrating here. if u're coming here to look for some job that anyone can do, dont expect red carpet treatment.Initially IGS only have 1 year visa but for the new system you will get 2 years visa. There's will others criteria you need to meet. hmm.... i don't it's a good thing or not, just not feeling good about it... architecture have felt this starting from 2005. now the immigration wont just allow any non-eu architecture graduates to be awarded work visa if they're just some low-average performer. top scorer/performer, yes. bottom feeders, no. even those already working here are finding a hard time to renew their work visa, especially when the employer arent too favorable towards u. |

diploma is higher than a-levels. it's just a matter if they're gonna take u from 1st year or 2nd year. if u hold an actuarial sci diploma, u MIGHT get into 2nd year of a degree from the same course in the UK (i can only assume here).
but if u were to decide to change course that has nothing to do with actuarial science, u will start at 1st year, without having to sit for A-levels. |

QUOTE(destroyer @ Feb 24 2008, 03:46 PM) owhohoho. here's a pointer:so that means if i get my diploma i'll still have chances of going to uk 2 study. How to apply for uk university? do they recognize UiTM diploma? DONT generalize the universities here. do they recognize UiTM diploma? it's a pretty hard thing to answer since each university has their own standard. if the top 10 universities do not recognize the diploma, but the bottom 200 do, people will tell u "yes, most of them recognize the diploma". now that is a very dangerous statement, bcoz it's totally misleading. infact, dont generalize universities anywhere. even in malaysia, the standard of each university is not centrally regulated. neither is any other universities in the world. |

QUOTE(nikyas @ Feb 26 2008, 12:44 AM) go to their website and email them. Unlike Malaysia's university, they reply pretty fast. Maximum waiting time is only 2 days. well, dont be too hopeful. my email to UCL and strathclyde took 2 weeks for a reply when i applied for my masters in 2003...but yes, most universities will reply to u within 3 days. |

at about 1250am just now, as i was finishing off my last burnout paradise race for the night, i felt a slight tremble on the floor. at first glance i assumed it was a lorry passing infront of the house. but it persisted for awhile like a long train passing through. and suddenly it got stronger until the entire house shook. stuff fell off the cupboard and papers strewn about. i was already on my feet under the door's lintel.
it was my first real earthquake. what an adrenaline rush! |

well, like people say, ignorance is bliss
being not too far away from grimsby, my wife and i felt the tremors quite distinctly. it was an experience of a life time. the best part is, we have a friend who's currently a GP in grimsby, and she was totally freaking out! she kept calling my wife all night hahaha... |

QUOTE(onemilimeter @ Mar 31 2008, 01:57 PM) Hi... how long have you been using your Acer laptop? Thanks. u can still get single bedroom apartment at GBP400 a month around the city centre. but not that many options. the standard nowadays is GBP450. but if u're doing postgraduate and dont mind 20-30minutes by bus to the university, stay outside city centre, and get a whole house at that price. like i told u before, my house is a 3 storey 3 bedroom landed property with separate living, dining and kitchen. it's a decent house for a family with 3-4 children, but i only live here with my wife LOL.Added on March 31, 2008, 10:01 pm GBP 4000 for one year? Someone in Sheffield told me that it's possible to get a single bedroom apartment (or studio) at GBP 400 plus per month. Is it true? Thanks. |

QUOTE(Corvinux @ Apr 7 2008, 11:30 PM) agreed to Warwick..its chicks heavens LOL..coventry is the main city there but becareful back in the 90's its voted one of the worse crime city in EUROPE. But then again Warwick itself is a fine uni and its near to london as well.. strathclyde = small city? are u kidding? glasgow is pretty big. it is the biggest city and the main economic drive and holds the largest student population in scotland. did u confuse it with some other city?Surrey & Staffordshire(Stoke on Trent & Stafford town) ok too..if ure at stoke on trent then it could be cheaper Aston - im not sure. Strathclyde - small city..u be dead Sunderland - u sure? its like so up north and much easier to go to Glasgow rather than going down to london..but its a cheaper city.. Did apply to sheffield university? I love sheffield! |

QUOTE(GammaBoy @ Apr 8 2008, 06:08 AM) sheffield got me laa. that's why its good one!QUOTE(Corvinux @ Apr 8 2008, 09:07 AM) ok one thing bout sheffield is that the city is good..in the middle of everywhere - notts, leeds, birm, manchester, bradford, hull, newcastle & liverpool and bout an hour n half by train to london and 2 hours n half by bus (if im not mistaken!) ..furthermore the education wise is also good..i mean sheffield university! actually, sheffield is the 8th biggest english city, and probably further back if u include the entire UK. it's not big, but it is quite close to other cities since it's quite in the centre of midlands. and it takes 2 hours 30 minutes by train to london actually. Sheffield Hallam im not sure.. Sheffield is a city actually more or less cheaper than birmingham and 4th biggest city in the UK..now im not sure how big..good food as well and they have Meadowhall!! One of the biggest shopping complex..the student union is huge too and heaps of activity as well..for cheaper house/room - broomhall is good..walking distance to the accounting, engineering, computer science & medical skool..or if u want much more cheaper..try darnall( we call it lil karachi) since heaps of paki hence it's cheaper..but if ure in sheffield u or hallam..u need to take bus.. @broomhall room rate around 120-150 quid inclusive..or around 90 - 130 non inclusive..darnall should be lot cheaper but reminder! the rate was back in 98(the last time i was there nevertheless i remember when i 1st set foot in sheffield..i said this is the place i wanna be..its peaceful quiet the city got lots of things to check out..now i heard even more bustling! my current neighbour is working there for HSBC and he's loving it i missed sheffield SHEFFIELD!!SHEFFIELD!! SHEFFIELD!! it's not too big that it's uncontrollable, and not too small that it's boring. the crime rate is pretty low, most people are friendly with diverse ethnicity. heck, sheffield has one of the biggest malaysian population apart from manchester, liverpool and dublin. and yes, it is still considerably cheaper to live in compared to most cities in the UK. |

typically, u need a BT landline that costs about GBP9.90 per month. on top of that, u'd need to subscribe to a broadband service that could range between GBP5 to GBP40 per month depending on speed and service provider's package.
i'm using virgin media, a cable based broadband that doesnt require a landline, but comes with a cable TV service. costs GBP20 per month. perhaps the only drawback is u'd have to pay TV license. |

a few pointers of finding a broadband:
i. remember that most services have a maximum bandwith limit per month. some caps at 1GB-2GB, others about 10GB, and a select few offer unlimited bandwith (but ofcourse quite pricey). ii. almost all services practice bandwith throttling. so if u plan to do much downloading, u gotta read all the fine prints. iii. before u sign up, ask the service provider where the nearest interchange is to ur house. there's no point ordering an 8mbps package, but u'd only get 4-5mbps bcoz ur house is too far away. iv. check ur package. most service providers come with free/cheap router. some even comes with free installation. v. check carefully what the package provides. some service providers lure in customers by cheap first 3 months offer, but then ties u for 12-18 months with higher rent. |

to start off, argos would be the best place. u've just arrived in the UK, u've just moved to a house or accommodation, u dunno anywhere else to go. so yes, go straight to argos laa. with 20quid u can get most of the necessary equipments. add another 40 to get a microwave oven. and it's not hard to find it either - argos is strewn about in the UK, it's almost impossible not to bump into them in town
but IKEA? now how do we get to IKEA in the first place? onemilimeter is gonna be in sheffield, and the nearest IKEA is either in nottingham, leeds or manchester - all are atleast 1 hour away by train. lagi mau carry all those stuff ah? mati loo... |
