I think it depends on availability of the configurations of your laptop. Its better to ask the person you deal with.
*
Asked the call center = 2 weeks
Asked the retailer = 2-4 weeks

did you ask at lyp? normally retailers with ready stocks (if you need stock configs only), you can do cod on the same day.

out of curiosity may i know how much you paid for 2 years extension

im using an m17xr4

Dell send me an email quoting rm600 for 1 year and rm800 for 2 years and they say that price changes everyweek this one is valid till friday only then next week different price , not sure getting cheaper or more expensive. Maybe follow dollar rate or something.
*
I bought together with the notebook and during that period of time, there's a discount of approx RM270 if I'm not mistaken.

Extended warranty is just for parts and it's next business day like usual. Also you can only call during office hours, etc to their support line if I'm not mistaken.

You won't be able to get the equivalent complete cover like you would have if bought new. So I'm not sure how worth it the extended warranty is. If you're going to use the machine for longer, probably necessary with the rate of failures.
*
QUOTE(horns @ Jan 11 2014, 04:08 PM)
yes, i guess it's much better to get extended warranty at the point of purchase at Dell Malaysia, because from what i've read, that's the only way to get a complete cover. they only offer part-only and nbd in the warranty extension after that point.

The extended warranty covers accidental damage as well like water damage, drops..
But it doesn't cover the goods being stolen as it's not an insurance after all
(i believe previously complete cover was offered on top of those options; wonder why it was taken down)

*
how much was the SSD upgrade and what's the spec?
I've just got mine few days ago and seems like the windows boot up is sweat.gif
the wake up from Standby is also sweat.gif
Coming from OSX, the wake up from sleep is almost instant.

my signature listed bro..intel 335 240gb. plan to upgrade 500gb. need save a bit. anyway my boot up improve a lot fr stock hard drive. the 64gb msata as storage now also not enough. haha
*
didn't realize the small text on your signature laugh.gif
How much was it? My HDD is just the normal 750GB without SSD. Realize not much worth it for the additional 64GB SSD hyrid style cos I am planning to change it eventually to a SSD.
But then the SSD prices are still very costly sweat.gif
Maybe I just hold on to this 750GB SATA crap temporary. Just can't accept the slow wake up time from sleep.
Rebooting is definitely not fast but that doesn't really bother me cos I don't usually shutdown my computer. It's just on standby most of the time.

QUOTE(horns @ Jan 12 2014, 02:53 PM)
for ssd upgrades, you can do it yourself. you can restore the system with alien respawn, or you can do a clean install.

for common usage and gaming, consumer grade ssd's should suffice. the sweet spot in terms of size, performance and price for now imo is 240gb range. if you have some extra money, go for 500gb or more. (it's a one-time investment that lasts you long enough; so i think you should get whatever largest possible). any decent brand/model will work well (samsung, intel, plextor, crucial, corsair, transcend, sandisk, etc.).

ssd's are for OS, apps, and games. for storage and downloads, you can use the stock hdd.
*
But the AW14 does not have additional slots for extra HDD. It's either or kinda of scenario sweat.gif

i have no idea. i never used it before. i saw my friends used it to create recovery media, but that's it.

fresh install imo is much better.
*
If I'm not mistaken there's a recovery type of disc right?
or do I have to burn it from the Respawn software thingy?

wow.. thanks man i just realized that we do have those. sorry i didn't pay attention to the contents in the box. i just took the laptop, power adapter, and cable out and left the rest untouched.

maybe with respawn it can restore all oem branding stuff. sorry i am not that sure.
*
same.. me too.
Didn't really bother about the rest when I unboxed it. Just had a quick look at what was given.
The most important is still the notebook and the adapter. That's all smile.gif

AlienRespawn can be used to restore ur laptop to factory state, which means a full backup of your system based on factory settings. Very handy for those people who doesn't want to start from scratch.
There's a recovery disc included together with the laptop other than manuals and the above mentioned.

But to all Windows 8 Alienware users, u only can use AlienRespawn for another drive as long as it has a bigger or equivalent sized capacity. Lower capacity drives will fail during the process. For example, if ur laptop comes with 750GB HDD and u want to use AlienRespawn for a 120GB/256GB/512GB SSD, the respawn process will fail. The software will inform u that ur drive must be 750GB or more in order to proceed. The only way to move over to lower sized SSD is to use cloning software which breaks ur AlienRespawn.

For Windows 7 users, it might still be possible. I was unable to try this because my system arrived with Windows 8. According to forums, it works but need someone to test it out.

The other alternative is to call Dell to send u a copy of the AlienRespawn image based on ur requirements but this might incur some costs. Not sure about the price.
*
Thanks for the tip.
Seems like Alien Respawn is more or less doing a ghosting.
Haven't been using Windows for 5 years sweat.gif Let's see how Win8 fairs compared to OSX.
By the way, any of you guys updated to 8.1 ?

i'm on w8.1 (single language and pro). i am used to it since 8. no issues with clean install, and the games that i play (bf4 mainly).
*
Guess I can safely update to 8.1 biggrin.gif
BF4 is a very costly game sweat.gif

btw, do you guys use any specific widget app to monitor the temperature of your Alien?

upgrade means in-store upgrade? that one i never tried before. i did a clean install then call MS to reactivate my copy (key quota exceeded limit).

i bought the premium then baru realize that dlc do not have new campaigns :/ (but damn the scenes are so nice).

i use hwinfo64 only. i don't use widgets haha!
*
I was told before the purchase that I can upgrade to 8.1.
Isn't the 8.1 something similar like the service pack thingy? or you actually have to pay for it? rclxub.gif

I guess I'll stick with hwinfo64 then.
Thanks.

no you don't need to pay for it; it's free for existing legit w8 users (like you and me). to me yeah it's supposed to be a service pack; but there are apparent but minor differences between the two. (for instance, no more wei score checking)

you can use this trick to download and keep a copy of iso file for later use biggrin.gif

http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-576083...indows-8.1-iso/

edit: note - this is an upgrade-only iso; meaning you need to install w8 then upgrade with the media.

i can do clean install because i got mine from a friend who has access to msdn (or technet i forgot). alternatively, grab the untouched version online.
*
Noted.
The upgrade version is always a pain.
In the event I have to format the pc, I have to repeat the whole process again with the installation restore from the recovery disc that is given. sweat.gif
And ghosting a 750GB is also pain sweat.gif
so damn with it..

Most probably they'll just guide you through the phone only as you have all the required items to do so.

well to be frank, yes it is a pain doing it the upgrade way. maybe there is a trick to do this less painfully :/ (i didn't research about this yet)
