I think it depends on availability of the configurations of your laptop. Its better to ask the person you deal with.

did you ask at lyp? normally retailers with ready stocks (if you need stock configs only), you can do cod on the same day.

i think it's nice smile.gif

the keyboard is not that bad la (except for the minor changes of layout; i always tap fn+f12; now it's fn+f11 to turn touchpad off)

edit: i didn't boot the laptop up after i got home with it. i took out stock drive, msata ssd, and dvdrom, then put in ssd's and did a clean install.

i think you should play with w8.1 first. (one good thing about w8.1 is smaller number of windows updates). sooner or later you will run it anyway.

if you still feel it sucks after 2 weeks, just revert to 7.

ok smile.gif

the first few weeks with 8 was a torture to me because I needed to do so much just to turn the machine off. (that's before I realized that it's as simple as alt+f4). I am comfortable with it now.

another alternative way is to bring up the Charms UI and you are good to go.
i did this before Alt+F4.
*
yes haha! i keep forgetting about that charms ui. in w8.1 we can right click on the windows logo and shut it down.

still.. shutdown -s -t 0 or shutdown -r t 0 as shortcut is the quickest biggrin.gif

Played Knack using remote play, there was some lag and it disconnected after a while. I think it's because of my wireless router though. I have heard that remote play isn't quite perfect as of yet. Maybe after a few updates!
*
i guess it might be due to bad internet connectivity too (20mbps, or even 40mbps, is not really good enough). if only our isp's are behaving like one..

i like the fact that there is a heart sticker at the webcam very safe.

Here is my update , a few weeks back my graphics card was no longer detected in bios . however alienware hardware diagnostics says that all my hardware is working fine. Dell came last week and changed my graphics card and its now working fine. Using 660m only so yes they replaced it with 660m and not 760m tongue.gif

Thinking of extending the warranty now , so scared. Changed mobo few times d , first was speaker no sound , second and third due to adapter plugged in not charging/ If take adapter out and plugged back in wont detect must start from full shutdown only adapter will detect.

Yes, I always cover the webcam area with a sticker just in case. No telling who might be watching.

I'd suggest extended warranty if you find yourself unlucky with the machine, I have had a ton of problems too. Mostly GPU, but also with the LCD and the touchpad. These computers will last years, so good if you can have extended warranty.
*
yeah it's really a good idea to extend it if your laptop has had issues before. you have no clue what can happen in the future. even though my r4 is fine so far (a second-hand some more;i was lucky that the previous owner took care of it nicely; no issue since i had it), i don't wanna have troubles later on (due to hand itchiness).

Think I'm going to just stick with Win 8.1

Guess I'll have to use it eventually, so might as well get use to it now. Sigh.
*
don't be sad haha.. 8/8.1 is not that bad. with a few tweaks it can be efficient as well.

Having a problem with the new machine, haven't really been using it but when I log into the system there's a problem earlier. I try to launch any program and a black screen appears with the battery icon blinking at the top left hand corner.

Then a few seconds after that it logs out and goes to the login page (with the time and date/battery/wifi icon)

Any idea what that is? I can't launch a single thing, can't get to desktop either. Just the window with all the program panes. Can't get to control panel either. It just goes blank and logs me out.
*
wow.. low battery (or the battery couldn't get charged)?

did you turn the adapter on? never had this issue before.

Yeah, just decided to test the sound on the new laptop and that happens.

Called Dell, ran diagnostics, hardware seems to be okay.

Reinstalling/restoring Windows 8 now. Bah.
*
that's scary.

when i last opened up my 17, i did a check on the battery. it's secured nicely to the laptop (2 screws), and the battery cable is firmly attached. unless there is something wrong with the mobo or the battery, physically it's very hard to have loosened/detached issue.

After the restore, it seems to be working fine. I'm not going to worry about Windows 8 anymore. I'm going to go back to Windows 7 Ultimate till all the bugs and kinks have been ironed out. Seems it happens a lot.

perhaps it's software-related. well.. nevermind..

i think last time i read in here someone said if using windows 8 64 bit basic version the maximum ram supported is 16gb ram is this true ? or was it for windows 7 i could be wrong. iinm windows 8 max ram is 128gb for standard version.

another noob question , my current RAM that is under the keyboard is 8+4 , so let say if i want to add another 8 is it best to remove the 4gb ram and replace it with 8gb or just add another 8gb at the 2 free bottom slots. coz i am very lazy to open everything to access the 2 slots under the keyboard.

m17xr4
*
for 64bit, w7 hp is 16gb. w7 pro is 192gb. w8 is 128gb. w8 pro is 512gb.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wi...v=vs.85%29.aspx

you can try insert the new ram in the empty slot to see it down-clock the ram speed. iirc usually the ram slots for laptops are designed in pairs, meaning it's better to put 2 compatible rams in each section.

don't be lazy. it's just a few screws away to get to ram slots under the keyboard.

yes, i guess it's much better to get extended warranty at the point of purchase at Dell Malaysia, because from what i've read, that's the only way to get a complete cover. they only offer part-only and nbd in the warranty extension after that point.

(i believe previously complete cover was offered on top of those options; wonder why it was taken down)
