that can wait. I don't find it to be that much of a problem with the standard 7200rpm 2TB Seagate Barracude HDD. aside from casual gaming, I'm just a regular user. not doing anything hardcore with it sweat.gif

yeah. I felt very lucky when I figured out the issue with the unusual temperature spike. thanks to countless X51 reviews/teardowns that I've gone through before finally decided to go ahead and get it laugh.gif

oh. right. you're really a person with a lot of patience smile.gif on the contrary, i need ssd. (for work purposes initially. however i got so used to its speed that even ssd caching and sshd become relatively slow) now my systems are all ssd + ram-based caching. to me the combo is much better to make a system even more responsive.

studying and get to know internals is always important so that we can manage a system ourselves. (and lesser chances to break things hehe)

Hey guys.

Sorry for this newbie question. How does the switchable graphics in Alienware laptops actually work?

For example, I seem to be able to switch between the integrated graphics and discrete graphics by pressing FN + F5 keys, and it requires a reboot to switch back and forth between the integrated and discrete graphics.

I was thinking, with Nvidia Optimus technology, shouldn't this be automatic? Like when I'm 3D gaming, my discrete graphics turns on and vice versa when I'm not gaming.

And the funny thing is, when I first got my AW17, the default was set to the integrated graphics! lol. I couldn't even run TitanFall at maximum settings properly then, and after I switched to discrete graphics (FN + F5 keys) and rebooted - then only everything became silky smooth.

Any thoughts? I tried to Google up some info about this but found none, hmmm.

Whoever can shed some light, I would be most grateful! notworthy.gif
*side note: for comparison sake, on my MacBook Preo Retina 15", under Mac OS X, the discrete GPU automatically kicks in whenever I'm doing anything graphic intensive, and it reverts back to the Integrated Graphics when I return to doing some light work.
*
the fn key combo actually means turning nvidia optimus on or off.

when you run igpu, that means nvidia optimus is enabled, and gpu automatic switching is in effect. you might need to add apps that need discrete gpu in the nvidia control panel.

3. goto http://support.dell.com/alienware, search for article id 439417. you can get optimus test tool there.

edit: if you do a fresh windows install, there is a link in the article no. 3 that tells you the right orders to manage both igpu and dgpu drivers. (i.e. to install, start with intel gpu driver, then nvidia. to uninstall, remove nvidia first, then intel drivers)

I guess I am. besides, my X51 is more of a entertainment center rather than resouce-intensive workstation.

yeah. I'm that kind of person. I like to know what's going on inside as well, to understand better on how everything works and how they are related laugh.gif
*
x51 r2 can go up to i7 4790. it will last you for a while as a entertainment center smile.gif

from a brief search it seems like a common issue for laptops, but kind of rare?

i think it's around that range. that spec is not a bad one, even compared to the latest models of the same range.

what is the ram size and what is its warranty?

oh the ram size is 16gb and no more warranty. i dunno how previous seller use the laptop.
without warranty for 5k sweat.gif
*
for alienware systems, it really doesn't matter how the previous owner used the system. for warranty extensions, you can try ask putochip123 or dell sales reps if this is possible for machines that are out of warranty.

if you think the price is not good for you, you should just let it go and look elsewhere.

hey guys, can i ask is it necessary to repaste GPU? or how long does original thermal paste last?

Btw i using m14x r2 (2 years old) and m11x r3 (3 years old), So far both my device are ok. no big issues , just curious about it.
*
actually the stock thermal paste will very likely last for years (3 years or more). the thing is that when we do regular maintenance (especially the cooling pars of cpu or gpu), it's better to remove the old paste also, and replace it with a new one.

normally thermal pastes commonly found in the market are good enough.

*
not sure about lowyat. usually i think you can look it up at taobao, if you know how to fix it, or just ask if putochip123 can help you with that.

Dear all sifus. I am planning to get the basic x51 r2 through Dell Online.

Any further advices before I commit to buy this?
*
if possible get that 330W power brick. and if you want to be trouble-free, you should purchase warranty extensions.

I've asked a Dell sales rep the other day, he mentioned that the 330W PSU alone gonna cost RM600 to purchase separately sweat.gif  sweat.gif

not really worth it in my opinion, better get at least the mid-range one
*
Right smile.gif its better to get the right parts from start so that everything is under warranty in one go.

hey guys, i never clean the hardware or fan since i bought my m14x since 3 years ago. so i guess its time to clean it coz problems are occuring =( i search youtube for guide on how to clean the fan n stuff but they only show how to disassemble the whole thing and not cleaning the fan or whatsoever, any sifu here might guide me? =)
*
the idea is just to clean the cooling system up (i.e. remove clogged dust on fans, and vents, then replace the thermal compounds on the cpu/gpu). all you need to know is how to get to those parts (i'm sure youtube videos have already taught you that).

how frequently you do this depends on how fast your machine starts to get hot. to me it's like twice every year (tbh my system has very little dust accumulated on the cooling system. there is no extreme cases like we saw on the internet, i.e. a whole chunk of cotton sugar like dusts clogging vents)

as for the tools to use, to me it's just toothbrush, cotton butts, thermal compound remover (you can also use isopropyl alcohol >90% concentration for this), and thermal paste. the choice of thermal paste is up to you.
