Hi guys. Anyone of you guys experiencing M17X R4 BD ROM issue after upgrading to windows 8.1? Mine can be detected but if I insert any media, it can't read it, just make normal reading noise  & later eject it. I uninstall & reinstall the driver but no go. Next week I'll try fresh install windows 8 to see if the problem persist. FYI, I upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7 & later upgrade it further to 8.1. BTW my BD ROM is "HL-DT-ST DVDRWBD CA40N".

have a quick search at google might find something useful. a clean install should solve this.

Today i went to singapore and try out a notebook with Two GTX 880m

crazy , i tell you this rig can easily beat desktop r9 290X  or even a GTX 680 - 770

Crysis 3 can run maximum settings still get 80+ fps
*
maybe. however, it will be much hotter. this type of setup is normally only good in air-conditioned rooms.

ah it's s'pore clevo-based laptops smile.gif locally we have illegear.

the statement about aw is overcharged, well.. it really depends. if you're talking about the hardware alone, maybe. to me, they have good support. for a high end system like aw, I think it's more important than the hardware itself. (I have several experience with dell tech support. I'm pretty impressed to be honest)

again, custom VARs like aftershock might be able to offer the same coverage under their warranty, like dell does, with cheaper price tags.

Local illegear service is pretty bad , their website is still outdated on some pages

Service times take days or even weeks

If you can travel to SG easily , then aftershockpc is a good choice even you are not because the service only take up to almost 3/4 less illegear service does

Aftershockpc won the best notebook electronics consumer last year even beat best denki and other retailer stores.

So that is pretty awesome

I like AW but their hardrive configurations are old and uses old SSDs from toshiba and sandisk + the price is crazy

Because of that Normal AW 14 from the current alienware malaysia cost around 7k without any SSD only few GB for cache while aftershockpc  cost around 7.5k with 3 yr warranty parts and service

256GB x 2 in raid 0 , 750GB western digital black and IC daimond thermal paste

AW 17 cost more than 10k with good spec or GTX 780m , that price can already buy a aftershockpc/clevo with TWO GTX 880m in SLi . Run anything on max settings even crysis 3 or elder scrolls online or even total rome
I am waiting for AW to refresh their 800m GPUs and see whether the price is good then i am going to decide which to buy
*
ok smile.gif yes get whatever you think awesome and be happy like us biggrin.gif

notes: after some brief tests, i think intel 7260 ac card is just 'partially' working for aw17. (maybe i have done wrong somewhere) the bluetooth module is having problems (unable to run due to some unknown reasons)

the replacement of wifi card is quite simple in aw17. just take out the back cover (2 screws); disconnect the antennas from the stock card; take out the stock card (1 screw); replace it with the new one; reconnect the antennas, and finally replace the back cover.

if you do not use the bluetooth module, just get rid of it from device manager by disabling it in the bios. (good for me because i only use wifi; i never used bluetooth biggrin.gif)

with the latest intel wifi driver 16.x (16.11.0 to be exact), it is stable at 866.7mbps, when coupled with asus rt-ac66u. note that somehow the cutting edge 17.x driver didn't work well with it.

Same here thumbup.gif
My M14x R1 is still working like a charm although suffering from pretty bad wear-and-tear laugh.gif Almost 3 years old already, no chance to claim my complete cover warranty!  laugh.gif
Its good to have support for an expensive performance machine like AW, or any other performance notebooks. And I'm really glad that Dell offers good warranty support + offers us the chance to extend warranty even after 3 years  thumbup.gif

....But the recent AW series too thick already, don't like  sweat.gif
*
right smile.gif

wear and tear is normal i don't mind that part. the most important stuff in aw to me is still parts lol!

yeah i also think he should talk to putochip123 first. however he seems to like aftershock pc very much haha! everyone has his own preference, and i really hope him finding a good machine that serves him well smile.gif

No wonder tongue.gif

Can you try moving 10 to 15 meters and tell me what does speed drops to or avgs up to?
Also I recommend you researching about ddwrt firmware for your router.
*
ddwrt? maybe later. i am fine with the stock firmware for now.

raymondtong94 might be able to help you so try contact him.

78c shouldn't cause fps to drop. mine is about 74c but still nothing happens. if it's more than 84c maybe.

that system is quite a headache to disassemble but at my most effort, i will do my best. sweat.gif
or if you need guidance, you can watch this video. all you need is a philips and flat head screwdriver actually.
*
oh i didn't know that. yeah normally a screw driver, a brush and a stick of thermal paste is all you need hehe

I found something weird, my GTX 260M is set at 1V by default as it supposed to be 0.9V for M15x. No wonder the temps reaching 90+C when gaming. Dropping to 0.9V makes it drop to 75C
*
sign of oc. if i were you i will never found this out lol!

QUOTE(raymondtong94 @ Mar 29 2014, 08:20 PM)
Upgrade to GTX880M brows.gif
Definitely worth the try.

Im thinking about to 'smuggle' a M17x at a cheap price and upgrade the graphics card. I very love the design of R3/4 than the R5.
*
imo you can also consider to get a dfo unit. iinm there is one at MYR 3.6k (3820qm, 660m, 120Hz screen, with killer 1103) at garage sales. all you need to do is upgrade the gpu. 3820qm is much better than 3840qm in terms of oc.

edit: one of my m17x is a dfo unit, and a second-hand some more lol! there is nothing wrong with it since day one.

i got a question guys... the LED light on my power button just keep switching to turqoise from blue (blue is the color i set) even though i kept everything at blue at the command centre...

any ideas? is it a defect?

edit : it is actually flickering... when i put it on blue it dims a bit then light back up...and rinse and repeat.

if i set it at orange it does nothing.....just stays there

im gonna call dell tomorrow morning!
*
do you mean default theme, the blue one? run cc and your mouse pointer over the color wheel to see the actions. is it like one of the alienhead effects? (e.g. plugged in and charging?)

edit: the orange theme (horns biggrin.gif) doesn't have the effect when plugged in and charging.

Sager is actually good for self-maintenance. i can calculate, total dismantling the whole laptop takes about an hour.

well, might consider about it. tongue.gif
just hope it can support latest generation graphics card.
*
imo you should. if you compared that dfo unit to those from other countries, well, you will not get one with that specs and price tag.

i think for 780m it's still ok; not so sure about 880m.

*
download the .net framework 3.5 via 'programs and features' and your cc will work fine. er what do you mean by 'but cant'? this requires internet so make sure you're connected before you install that feature.

updated to 8.1 update 1 via offline mode. seamless. offline mode is better to save some time to wait for the update file downloads (800+ MB per OS; it's time consuming)

just download and then follow the installation sequence highlighted here, http://www.extremetech.com/computing/17809...-free-right-now

repeat for all the machines.

So I just download those 6 patches and install them accordingly how they have mentioned to install em right? anything else?

As this sentence. 'Once you’ve downloaded Update 1, you will have six separate patches that need to be installed in a very specific order. ' confuses me. Is update 1 a different thing or these 6 patches will give u 8.1 update 1?
*
yes, following the sequence worked fine for me. (did this for 3 machines already). to avoid confusion, it's better to visit the official page, http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/de...s.aspx?id=42335

windows 8.1 update consists of 6 separate patches. usually we already have KB2919442, the prerequisite to install KB2919355.
