Only thing that pissed me off about the R4 was the ram slots under the keyboard. But everything else was fine. My R4 came with some of the screws with the groves worn. So I had trouble getting my ram in. Had Dell site fellas come and replace the screws after a while.
ram slots under keyboard is not that bad. in terms of disassembly, imo it's the dvdrom/bluray drive. for asus g55, it's just 1 screw and slight push to take it out and replace with hdd caddy. for r4, it's a relatively tedious task.
i have put an msata ssd into my r4 also. you just need to take the palm rest area out.

just to share my experience on dismantling M18x (i think its the same as M17x).
basically its just remove the back cover, the screws holding the keyboard cover and pry out the keyboard cover. then, unplug the shortcut keys cable and you are good to remove the keyboard. its practically not a hard job to access the RAM slots under the keyboard.
nice tip

basically tearing r4 down is quite simple. (way simple than my asus g55)

Yeah, I blame whoever screwed em down the first time. Probably at the factory. To be honest, most of the screws were in bad condition when I received my R4. I had to get a technician to come and replace more than 11 screws and they still managed to make a mess out of that. So I replaced a few screws myself.
many tend to forget that we do not need to tighten the screws in laptops with much strength :/
