Looking at the price of Sonos Beam G2 at RM 2,999… you should go audition Samsung Q990B. Comes with subwoofer and rear speakers.

You can always store the subwoofer away until you need it.

Sonos price is just a lot more compared to Samsung or Sony for comparable soundbars. Could be Samsung and Sony had adjusted the pricing for the local market.

I had two detailed listening sessions with a full Sonos Arc with sub and rear speakers and compared that with the Samsung Q990B. Samsung is better. The concern with Samsung products is when the next model gets released, firmware support is lacking for the older model. And we are talking about the much better Arc over the Beam.

If not mistaken it’s a wireless sub, can place else where in the room.

I feel the Q990B is really value for money among sound bars. The Sony just didn’t justify the extra money at all.

Dont buy the Sonos Beam Gen 2 at full price of 2999..... it could drop to as low as 2.4 - 2.5k during promotions

Go try it out first and see whether you like the sound... some Harvey Norman branch have demo unit, if not you can visit Sonos showroom by TC Acoustics at Starhill gallery

It's not a bad buy for the price actually, the Beam Gen 2 is consistently rated as one of the better 5.1 sound bars with Atmos by reviewers. Also the plus point for Sonos is the ecosystem, you can always expand your sound system with more speakers or a sub. Ikea also collaborated Sonos so you can get Ikea speakers and link with the sound bar to form a 5.1.2 setup

None of the soundbars discussed will give decent Atmos. Mostly marketing claims. Maybe the Q990B will.

I guess sharing a summary of my experiences may be helpful for the current soundbars discussion.

Full disclosure. I recently purchased the Sony A9 as it is close enough to my AVR setup for streaming content. I also looked at USD price points for different soundbars to get an idea where each price performance segment it is competing against. Seen a lot of reviews and time to listen at the stores.

Sonos was my initial choice just that it will be twice the cost of the Sony to get all the pieces together to match the sound stage etc. Just the way Sonos is priced locally.

The Q990B is actually quite close to the Sony but it does not do well with spatial music in comparison. Samsung at almost one third the price was tempting.

All said the Q990B currently is like at half the price in US. Samsung has this habit of really good pricing and just before the 2023 models start selling. Maybe you can find a system at under RM2k at more than 50% discount from its original price. Not the flagship Q990B but more mid range?

Other factors to consider.... the space where you plan to put your sound setup

Also this is just me, but I felt its a waste to get a sound bar from another brand just to pair with a TV from other brand where some features have to be sacrificed eg: Q Symphony

Q Symphony seems great for some Samsung TVs. I have the QN95B and needed a firmware update to fix the vibrating or buzzing backplate problem. What the firmware did was to silence frequencies around 100Hz and below. Something to do with the thin backplate with all Samsung TVs with the One Connect box and resonance frequency causing the backplate to vibrate loudly.

One nice thing about better soundbars is room calibration on the fly. And that allows speaker placement changes to be corrected in a simple manner. Compared with AVRs with the calibration microphone tedious process.

Nice plus point if frequently need to move the speakers around. Not exactly tedious… generally about 8 points data. The rest is software. Unless if you include the manual time align, level matching, crossover sweep etc after that then very different la 😂

Now is a good time to buy Samsung Q990B. Most of the stores selling between 3.3k to 3.5k.

It was still on website last week. I called one of the Harvey Norman branch last weekend and they said can reserve for me at this price, but two days later they told me that no stock anymore at all Harvey Norman branch at West Malaysia. After that they took down Q990B from their website.

I called Senheng but also sold out nationwide. Luckily I managed to get one last set at a local store near my area at RM3399.

P/S: Just found out that this store is selling Q990B at RM3299 --> (BANHUAT)
