Maybe depending on what is wrong with your unit? Last time my phone suddenly the Imei went disappear. So brought to 1U, but the technician was not in. However, I managed to get it back on the same that in evening.

long short story ;

used CM11 > flash stock based custom rom > imei lost > flash stock rom > still fake imei (0049..) > flash modems > still 0049.. imei

restore back to stock rom and send to sc

stock rom does not contain the efs partition which holds the IMEI info. only thing to do now is to restore nandroid backup of the original ROM that comes with the phone if available. not sure what else you can do now aside from going to SC.

care to share what custom rom you used that caused this problem? happened to me once with ECHOE rom v8.

I used stock rom rooted. Install Titanuim backup to remove almost 50& of the apps / bloatware. Seems improved a bit.

If i use MIUI, do i need to change the modem and kernel?
